Box office numbers (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2003&wknd=14&p=.htm)

Well, on it's first weekend, Cowboy Bebop topped over $200,000. And its per-screen average was $13,000, which I don't think is too bad, is it? It seems to have more of a limited audience than Spirited Away does.

Speaking of which, Spirited Away took in over a million, and its total B.O. is near $9 million, but there seemed to be a steep enough drop from last weekend. I'm hoping that at this rate, it could at least top $10 million.

you gotta remember it is only in 19 cities, it's not so much that Bebop doesn't attract people, it's that they just can't get out to see it... three hours away from their house.

Nick, the per screen average for CB is about the same as what Spirited Away got when it first debuted in 20 or so cities.

Remember that Watanabe said he would consider making a Cowboy Bebop sequel should the movie make more than one million dollars here in the US. Let's pray for that.

I checked around on the site that I linked to, and it said Spirited Away's per-screen average was over $17,000 its first week of release. So it's a bit more than CB's, but not as big a difference as I first thought. Oh, well.

Either way, CB's B.O. take seems all right, especially since I thought it wouldn't have the mass appeal as Spirited Away had. That and the fact CB was rated R in the States, while Spirited Away was...I think PG, right?

Does anyone know for sure if CB is expanding next week-end? I'd think it'd would.

I don't think cowboy bebop is on as many screens as spirited away was. Not to mention, it's rated 'R' which may turn off a lot of people. Those that aren't turned off, may not be able to get in.

Please be careful to keep this thread on topic. A comparison of the CB and SA returns it all right, but remember that Cowboy Bebop movie discussion belongs on the Adult Swim board, and we already have a Spirited Away returns thread here (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?threadid=72110).

I think he was just joking about that... :tom:

Right. It was basically his way of saying he didn't have much hope for Bebop's North American box office performance. At least, that's how I took it.

Besides, doing another Bebop would be a pretty massive undertaking. And honestly, wouldn't a sequel series kind of ruin the integrity of the original? That's my take on it, anyway.
