I had the desire recently to use them again after a few years, but the printer wouldn't print. I have some recollection of there being a specific order to turn things on in order for the pictures to print, is that true?

No, I don't think so. I've been able to print pictures out on mine without turining things on in a specific order. If the printer still works, then it should print your pictures. I'm sorry if that doesn't help you any.

have you tried the givens? Batteries, cable, etc? oh, and the little test thing...holding down the button when turning it on or something...I got the urge to use it too a year or so ago, but ran out of paper, and of course nobody sells it anymore
