Carrie was nearly an abortion as a book...if not for his wife's effort to save the manuscript from the trash can, King's first opus would have been lost. To me that would be the perfect woman...one who cares about your career and isn't afraid to support you, and who stays with you even when you're living in a trailer and have to have the phone shut off every other month to save money.
The movie was passable...but most film versions of King books slice-and-dice plots, add characters, subtract characters, and alter ending to a point they are unrecognizable. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/other/mblah.gif Consider Pet Semetary...they nixed Jud Crandall's wife totally, had the babysitter--an old hag rather than a pretty young thing--hang herself, and even changed Crandall's brand of cigarettes (thanks to my father for noticing this; I didn't). King himself grumbled that Stanley Kubrick did The Shining a disservice by nixing the overheating boiler as a metaphor for Jack's troubled psyche. And don't get me started on my gripes about It (my favorite scene of Butch Bowers and his boys lighting their farts in the junkyard didn't even make the first script draft!).
This is why I worry about becoming a writer...even if I succeed, I have to put my work in the hands of directors/producers who will likely wipe their butts on it. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/other/pacscat.gif
