Was at Wal-Mart for the first time in a little while tonight, and came across a display of wall art. They weren't framed, but "ready to hang" and printed on wood. They mostly had Simpsons, Garfield, and Coca-Cola pin-up girls... but they had two nice Tom and Jerry ones. They were $5.97 each and I would have bought them if I had a few extra bucks with me.

The first was a re-creation of a scene from a Chuck Jones Tom & Jerry cartoon. Jerry, in his pajamas, standing on Tom's head, holding Tom's eyelids open. I can't recall the title of the cartoon at the moment.

The other was a re-creation of a piece of MGM promotional art. Tom leaning on a chair that Jerry is sitting in. Here is the original picture (http://www.tomandjerryonline.com/Tnj/T&J_BW.JPG) that it was based on.

There were also a couple Looney Tunes ones. One had Sylvester dressed as the Statue of Liberty grabbing for Tweety. The other had Taz, Daffy, Sylvester, and Tweety holding up the leaning tower of Pisa (no Charlie Dog, though :p ).

I think the Chuck Jones T&J cartoon you're referring to is "Jerry, Jerry Quite Contrary" (1966) in which Jerry does terrible things to Tom while walking in his sleep. It seems like the re-creation you're describing would fit into that cartoon.

Also, the MGM promotional art recreation appears to be from the early-to-mid 1940's judging by the character design of Tom and Jerry. The characters looked like they did in cartoons like "Sufferin' Cats", "The Million Dollar Cat", and "Mouse Trouble" all from around the mid 1940's. I've noticed that with the design of Tom in those cartoons, his whiskers seem to come together to form an evil-looking moustache (a la Snidely Whiplash)! When his design was streamlined in later cartoons, his whiskers were more spread apart. Just an observation of mine.

What did they have with America's Favorite Yellow Skinned Family?

I didn't really pay close attention to Simpsons ones. I was mostly paying attention to the T&J ones (I mean, how often do you see *any* Tom and Jerry merchandise these days, besides those video games?). Anyway, I recall two Simpsons designs. One was a parody of the "Got Milk?" ads and had Homer screaming because he was out of beer. Another had Bart in various poses.
