View Full Version : New Heckle and Jeckle series

I'll check it out if they actually make it, but having never seen an actual classic Heckle and Jeckle cartoon before, I won't be able to judge on it.

Knowing MTV, it would probably be sort of like Space Ghost Coast to Coast on CN...take a lesser-known cartoon series and "modernize" it. Perhaps not lesser-known in this case, but I haven't ever seen a Heckle and Jeckle cartoon. So lesser-seen. I'll be interested to see what they do with it.

Hey Yak and Matthew~
You've really never seen any of the original Heckle and Jeckle cartoons??? WOW, they were a staple on independent stations since the dawn of time (along with Mighty Mouse). They truly were the most likably funny-aggressive characters Terrytoons would ever produce. They feature wonderfully weird loose chases and of course that strange Phil Scheib (must be related to Earl Scheib :p) annoying soundtrack. Filmation also did a Saturday morning version of the two magpies, NOT their best outing... And definitely not nearly as good as the Filmation version of Tom and Jerry.

Will Frank Welker voice Heckle and Jeckle again, as he did in the filmation version? I'll be thankful if the producers let Quackula rest in peace, though, locked away in his coffin. He was one of the lamest characters Filmation ever birthed. BTW, IMO, Filmation's best series was Fat Albert and the Cosby kids. Anyone hear ever heard the Bill Cosby routine "Fat Albert Got a Hernia"? Riot! Riot!
Beck added a link that goes someplace else (where else do links go?) for more detail, it says Jerry Beck is the producer, so I doubt they will mutilate the characters with an animation historian at the helm.

I like the sound of all the new cartoons coming from MTV. Heckel and Jeckel provide a good nod to the cartoons of the past while looking to the future. Seeing what MTV will do for them should be great fun! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/alienz/ufo.gif

Am I the only one who has a REALLY bad feeling at the idea of MTV's Heckle and Jeckle?? I am picturing the talking magpies being transformed into Beavis and Butthead clones! The fact that I now see that Jerry is involved makes me feel a little better. A little.

Since everything animated on TV has pretty much been front-office driven since Fred Silverman decided he knew what Americas' kiddies wanted on CBS' Saturday morning lineup back in the mid-1960s, how this comes out will probably depend on whether or not the executive in charge at MTV/Viacom will allow H&J to be H&J, and not, Beavis and Butthead, or Ren and Stimpy for that matter, stuffed into magpie suits.
I also hope Jerry can find an animator who can do a good Jim Tyer impersonation. Given that most of MTV's animation could hardly be called "lloose-limbed and free-flowing," it would make what ever they came up with stick out from the rest of the MTV animated products (Jim Tyer doing "Daria"? That would be worth a pay-per-view performance).
