Marvel has confirmed that June’s issue #57 of Peter Parker: Spider-Man will be the series’ last. Long reported to be coming, with last fall’s issue #50 as one of the original targets for ending, the move will clear the decks for the launch of Spectacular Spider-Man, the new Spider-Man series by former Peter Parker writer Paul Jenkins and artist Humberto Ramos.

Issue #57 is part two of a two-part arc by Zeb Wells and Sam Kieth.

While Marvel would only say that Spectacular Spider-Man is launching “soon after” the end of Peter Parker, in the same solicitation where it mentions the resurrection of NYX, Wizard also hypes a preview of Spectacular Spider-Man.

If history is any indication (Wizard previewed Wolverine #1 with the issue that hit stores at the end of February, while the issue hits stores in May), Spectacular Spider-Man #1 in July or August at the latest.

The Spectacular launch was originally supposed to coincide with Kevin Smith and Terry Dodson taking over the creative duties on Amazing Spider-Man and the current Amazing team of J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. launching a new Spider-Man title. Given the difficulties in making his schedule coincide with that required for writing a monthly, Smith withdrew from writing Amazing monthly, which allowed Straczynski and Romita Jr. to remain on the title. According to Marvel E-I-C Joe Quesada, Smith is still on board for writing a Spider-Man project, although the format and launch date are undecided.

Shouldn't Smith finish his Black Cat/Spider-Man mini-series first?

I'm looking forward to the new title, even though it seems a bit unnecessary. But it'll generate some new sales. Maybe the third Spider-Man movie will be called The Spectacular Spider-Man. I really like Paul Jenkin's works, and I really like the artwork that Ramos did for the series. He's no Mark Buckingham, but he really made that Green Goblin arc work!

I've been saying it for years, but I hate when issues re-start when there's absolutely no need to (i.e. - Starting the new series a month after the old one ended). Many companys hike sales on pre-running jumpstarts (see: Jim Lee Batman).

It's just like the new Wolverine series. It's unneccesary. Just hype a new creative team and go with the flow.

Whatever. I stopped buying Peter Parker anyway. I thought it was a crappy book. And if I understand you correctly, nothing is really changing except the title and numbers on the cover. Big fat hairy deal! While I will miss Tangled Web I'm now going to limit myself to one Spider-book, just as I do one Super-book, one Bat-book, and one X-book a month, and it is simply going to be Amazing. ;)

Oh yippie... yet another Marvel re-boot. No real reason, just a new team taking over.

Just the thought of Smith on a Monthly book is a joke. Green Arrow ranked up there with Ultimates as far as shipping goes when Smith was writing that one.
