View Full Version : Do You Use Ghetto Slang, Even Tho You're No Straight 'G'?

JohnCrichton
02-24-2003, 04:20 PM
My friends and I do.

It's fun. We're geeks to the extreme, but sometimes we'll use what we can from the rap and whatnot we listen to.

Such as calling someone or something a "Straight Up G". You know that lil' robot, Vincent, from the movie "The Black Hole"?

Well, that's an example of someone we'd call a Straight G. Maximillion's one of the most frightening unstoppalbe villians I can remember in a movie. Vincent took that monster on head to head without flinching.

If I remember right, he like.. used a drill or something to take that titan out.

Anyway, do you find yourself ever using ghetto slang as a result of too much pop-culture?

The Landstander

i use ghetto slang sometimes with my friends but its more a matter of making fun of the kids at my school who actually do use it in a real sense. so technically no.

You mean like "Hizzy", "Fo-Shizzy", and other word that end in "-izzy"? If so, yeah we use it, but it's usually making fun of stuff. :p

Never heard it called "urban slang" before... as long as I've ever known it it's been "ghetto slang".... no negative conatation either.

But anyway.. my friends and I use it. It's fun as hell and sometimes hilarious.

Hey guys, just jumping in again to make sure that this thread doesn't become a ghetto slang discrimination thread. It isn't at the moment, and for the sake of those that may be offended if that changed, be careful how you say things. That's all. :)

I used to get that all the time in high school. I hated what Will Smith did to the language of young black men.

I talk "proper" too, but on occasion it's fun to say, "tight", over use "yo", or call someone I think highly of as a "straight G".

Btw, thanks, CY! :D

Oh, I always speak "ghetto." Have you not noticed how hip I am? I am totally more hip than you square fellows.

Ah, actually, I just do it as a joke. It's funny to see my parents misuse slang. ("Sup dude? Dawg, man! That's dawg!") But my brother and I also do the "surfer" talk as a joke too, like "killer!" or "sick!"

I never understood that. I mean, it's not like us Chinese people suffer from pressure to sound "more Chinese". (Although I'm not sure what that would be...actually speaking the language, or sounding like I just immigrated... :D)

JohnCrichton i wasn't saying it was called "urban slang". what i meant is that people in urban areas usually speak this kind of slang. The term "ghetto slang" sounds very ignorant and low class. No one in the Hip-hop community ever call it "ghetto slang". Its like when the media start calling Rap "Gansta Rap". Over here in Jersey we just called it slang. simple.... Btw "Straight G" was play out five years ago :p

Huh. Maybe in your half of the metropolitan area. :p The VA suburbs are obsessed with the preppy "urban-californian" hybrid. They will use "tight" and "gay" (the improper way) in the same sentence. Watch...

"Yo, dawg, Sandra's boots are, like, tight, but Manny's hat is so totally gay like a mofo."

 It bugs me.

Anyway, my friends and I have recently begun a nickname system that parodies the "urban" style. Dan is Dizzy, Harry's Hizzy, Matt is Mizzy, and I, Phil, am Fizzy.

I see now.

Here in Wisconsin tho(at least in the early 90's) it was infact called "ghetto slang" amoung my friends and I who lived in urbania.

As for "Straight G" being played out five years ago... more retro, the better, I say! :D

For the record, it's not urban slang or ghetto slang. It's Ebonics. That's right. Our own language is documented now. I speak Ebonics, but only around people who know what I'm saying. Since I live in a predominantly white city, I hardly ever use Ebonics. As you can tell by reading this, I am quite proficient in proper English as well. however, proper English is dull. No matter how you dress it up and no matter how many obscure 7 syllable words you use, it just doesn't have that "flava". Besides, you can say what you want faster in Ebonics. For example, one might say, "Hey, Jim. That was some get-together last night, huh?"
In Ebonics, that would be something like, "Yo, J! Dat party last night was off the chain!"
See the difference?
I'd like to pose a different question: How many of you are actually serious when you use Ebonics?

I say butcher the Flenglish language, it's overrated. Why is it the only subject that most high schools in the country require a full four years of study? More people should learn four years of math, or science, or world history. Things that an academic student from Los Angeles can discuss with an academic student from Paris, France.

However, using "ghetto slang" doesn't exactly make some "down wit'it." It does make them more likely to buy modern rap/hip-hop/R&B music, though.

If he's black, then he's adding on the the stereotyping of his own people. How does John then, as an African-Americans, expect racial lines to disappear when he gives African-Americans their own "language"?

Essientially you are arguing for cultural amalgamation.

haji495
03-02-2003, 10:02 PM
You bet I am. These racial lines are ridiculous. Every race accuses every other race of being racist. But then every race sterotypes themselves, but gets angry when another race does it. It's grown quite old and bothersome. Why do we separate each other so much? United we stand? I wish that was completely true...

Psilon
03-03-2003, 12:59 AM
Should we eliminate languages then?
Should we eliminate all religions?

The big question is then which culture do we adapt?

Many friends of mine speak different langauges, have a religion, have different skin colour...none of them are racist...

I THINK I see what you're saying...maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see how we're stereotyping black people. Lots of black do use "ghetto language" on a regular basis, and lots don't. I didn't see anyone say that ALL black people do.

He's talking about double standards where a race can and often does stereotype themselves but when a person of another race does the same it's considered racism.

On topic, I use it to some extend but not enough to make myself look like that goofy, dumbass white boy who tries to be black way too much, sort of like Steve Martin is acting in his new movie.

A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure.
An often walled quarter in a European city to which Jews were restricted beginning in the Middle Ages.
Something that resembles the restriction or isolation of a city ghetto: “trapped in ethnic or pink-collar managerial job ghettoes” (Diane Weathers).

Though the meaning nowadays has to do with the poor.
