View Full Version : Superman's New "S"

So what does everyone think of the new red & black logo on Superman's costume, as opposed to the traditional red and yellow. Personally, I like the new logo and it actually fits. It's not a random costume change, but a memorial for all those lost during Our Worlds At War. Plus, the blackened 'S' on the cape really works. Comments?

It makes him look evil. I think it is pretty cool for a more evil Superman who doesn't take people's crap. Likethe old TAS Superman.

I might like it. But, Kansas gettin' blasted & deaths of Superheroes and Supes changing his emblem to a red and black emblem in honor of the deaths. Why does it seem like an ode to Kingdom Come?

Eh? I missed this... can anyone post a pic of the new Supes?
Sounds a lot better than the "electric blue" Superman fiasco, at least. And it may turn into a retroactive memorial for the recent World Trade Center attacks too.

Yeah, I don't follow the Superman comics, so I haven't seen the new symbol either. Anyone got a link so we can check it out?

Hmmmmm.... interesting. I'm trying to picture it with the rest of the suit, but all in all, it's not bad.

According to DC, this change will be permenant. They hint he may change it once he gets over the OWAW event, but they say it'll be there for sometime to come. I predict 2 years tops.

I don't like it. If they want to make a useful change to his costume, they should darken the colors on it like they did on Superman: TAS.

The whole suit is darkened. The blue is darker. The cape is darker. Everything is darker and I think it totally works. Could this be a step towards Kingdom Come which is more and more becoming DC's actual future?

Sure, just like the Dark Knight Returns has influenced the DC Universe for years...badly.
Every time there is a big event book set in the Elseworlds mode, the rest of the DC universe conforms to the events set in motion, only to be undone when the gimmicks don't work anymore.
Count me out. I want red, yellow and blue!

The darker color scheme is better, I think. Is he himself going to become a little darker due to the events of OWAW? That would be really cool...

I kinda like the new emblem. I'm a big fan of Kingdom Come, and I always liked that emblem. I think the new darkened costume is perfectly in line with what Superman's going through. I always think the costume should reflect the character.
As for taking steps toward Kingdom Come...well, it's been happening for years.
Victor Stone gets that whole "liquid metal" thing going, a la KC.
We see an actual in-continuity appearance by Iris West II, AKA Kid Flash.
We get the Atom Smasher.
Ollie Queen makes a comeback.
Kansas goes boom, but not the same way as KC.
Superman gets himself a new emblem.
Any others that I missed?

Eh, i kinda prefer the red and yellow "S" myself. Though, i'll admit i don't really follow the comics, and i haven't seen the full costume, so that just shows how little my opinion means.

Thanks bloodone, It's appreciated.
Well, since I don't really follow the Superman comics, my opinion may not count for much in this case. But, I'll throw in my two cents anyway. I like it - much cooler design then the regular costume in my opinion. I like that they've darkened up the colors, and I really like that they've tken the yellow out - never cared for the yellow.

Okay. So if this is a reaction to the events of Our Worlds at War, I guess I should ask: What happened? Who was at war? Who died? If anyone could give a brief synopsis and casualty list, that would be appreciated.

I don't know if this is still spoiler material, but anyhow:
Basically, this big, Galactus-type guy,Imperiex, comes to Earth to destroy it. All these alien beings come to help out, cuz this guy destroyed their worlds. Kansas gets blown up, lotsa civilians die. Pluto gets transformed into Warworld, a planet belonging to Braniac 13 (sidenote: what does Braniac think of this new guy? Haven't seen the original in quite a while...) Apokalyps goes through a boom tube and is right next to Earth. So it's basically Apokilyps, Earth, and a bunch of aliens vs. Warworld. Those are the "worlds". Casulities, well, that one's tougher. Steel died, only to come back before the war was over. Aquaman "died", but he's coming back. The Kent Farm blew up, but luckily Ma was grocery shopping at the time and Pa was who knows where (he appears to have amnesia right now  ) Hippolyta, WW's mom, died. Lois' dad died. Sgt. Rock "died" (he now runs the new Suicide Squad, but don't get me started on the "deaths" in the first issue of that book...). Maxima died. Alotta amazons bit the big one. An Impulse "scout" died. Oh, and 'Lil Lobo died too.
I think that's about it. Personally, this story probably would have worked better as a Wonder Woman event. Maybe then it would have been good. As it was, I couldn't seem to care about most of the story. These "SUPER"-crossovers are getting worse each time, it seems.

eh. It's not too bad, it's not great. I dont think the black and red goes with the blue well, even if it is all a little darker. I kinda liked the red and yellow better.

www.popcultureshock.com has recaps off the three month event, divided by three columns. It's pretty detailed and indepth..

I like it because it reminds me of the old Flechier Superman cartoons. Also it's kind of cool how Bats went back to his old look, and now Supes did too.

Superman's new suit is starting to grow on me--I noticed how all the colors are darkened in. I hope that this remains even after they return the yellow to the "S" symbol.
Speaking of which, is the yellow "S" still on the cape? I hope not.

It's now a black "S." It's Superman's new logo, but with the colors switched (black "S" instead of red "S").

Costume still needs a little bit of tweaking, IMHO - but that's coming from someone who never much liked the original version of the costume to begin with.

I'd like it better if the reds on his outfit were still bright. Which they are on the cover art but not on the inside.
Of course I know why the outfit has been darkned, because its basically Supermans mouring colors. Which leads to the whole OWAW thing which would just lead me into a rant on how 'grim n gritty' still has a stranglehold.
If they were wanting to play with the colors on Supermans outfit, I've always thought that making the yellow parts look much, much more like *gold* would be an improvement. Also, taking the pant loops off the belt like Alan Davis did in Superboys Legion.

I think they should change the costume back to normal red, yellow, and blue in a few years.
James Harvey

DC says the colors will stay in effect for at least a year. I'd like to see this be permenant, but I know that won't be the case.

I like it! I think it gives Superman a harder edge. The "S" logo is the same. They'll change it back to the original eventually though. They've experiment once already with changing Superman's costume and it didn't go over.

First, that was more than just a costume change. The powers changed, and when Superman Red came along, a personality change happened, too.
I really like the new costume, but I'm undecided as to whether or not I want it to change. I think Superman's dealing with a lot right now, and that's a way to let it out. But a big part of getting over what happened during the war will be to change the costume back.
MINOR SPOILERS! (It's only what we know from PREVIEWS, but some people don't wanna know anything)
And, apparently, Superman's going to a psychiatrist in SUPERMAN #176 (November), and I imagine he/she (can't remember which) will bring up the costume.
Spoiler space added by mod.

The new costume looks cool. I wonder if we'll ever see this new costume in animated form.

The new Superman isn't depressing, just mourning. Although rumor now has it that the classic look will return by Action #800.

Well, if it was like "Legacy," then yeah, maybe. But then again, I don't know.

In the events of Lergacy, a black symbol might almost work if they ever do follow-ups. I wish they did do follow-ups. The comic could've eben great if they tackled the post-LEGACY events. But instead we get crappy Neil Vokes stories....
