on a topic involving religion, right?
Just a note to point out that today's 'mythology' is yesterday's 'one true religion'.
I like the earth goddess model.
and while I'm here...
an earlier post mentioned Wicca.
for those who don't know, but might care:
this is the ancient, pre-christian european religion whose name is the root for the word 'witch'.

Wicca is the name of the belief system.
Wiccan is one who practices is.
I believe it is a very pantheistic belief system, IE that God exists within everything. Ask Avaran for more details though.

Oh and by the way Happy Heathen, I'd disagree with you by saying that yesterday's myth's turn into newer more advanced forms of the same myth, or that yesterday's magic becomes todays technology.
By the Earth Goddess do you mean Gaia of Greek Mythology specifically, or just the various "Earth type" mother goddesses that seem to prevade many world belief systems.
(I'm a fan of world Mythology :p)

ummmm...
I agree that some religions do 'morph', others die.
the earth-goddess i like is the ancient one known to just about all cultures - she (later, i think) became a more specific 'goddess of fertility'.
i find religions (past and present) fascinating - i just regret that so many have been used to motivate/justify so much evil.
fire worship, anyone?

OK folks -
who can NAME a god that has not already been named?
how about any of the 330 (or so) Hindu dieties?

The Rabbit in the moon in Chinese mythology ^_^ Mmmm.....rabbit candy.
Heng-O (Is that how you pronounce it?), the Chinese Moon Goddess.
Artemis is my favorite Greek God.
Isis and Bastet are my favorite Egyptian gods.
The Christian god sounds kinda neat, if he wasn't such a pain in the ass most of the time (That was said tongue-in-cheek, please don't take offence)
Many, MANY of my friends are Wiccan. My boyfriend's mother is Wiccan (His father is Christian...needless to say, he's an athiest ^_^). Oddly, there are a lot of teeny-bopper Wiccans (13-15 year olds). I wonder why that is? (foreshadowing of a Nightflower rant that she's too tired to get into right now since she just woke up). IMHO (And considering Wicca is a minority group, I might get in trouble for this), a contemptuous Wiccan is no better than a contemptuous Christian.

My fave mythological god is Zeus, then Poisedon. Mostly interested in the Greek and Roman myths, nothing else...
Hindu gods? Shiva, Bhrama, and Vishnu are the main ones...can't name any more.

The famous crippled smith. He lost the use of his legs after he tried to interfere in an argument between Zeus and Hera, and the big guy threw him off of Olympus. In Homer's Iliad, he crafted a great shield for Achilles in his forge. The image of a big dude with a muscular upper body atop little shrivelled-up dead legs always got me because it's simultaneously powerful and absurd....

It has to be the greek godess Artemis b/c no man messes with this deity. Also É have to say the greek godess Hecate is one of my favorites . I think if I am not mistaken she is the godess of Magic.
From the gods it has to be Zeus, heck his love life is something to talk about. He has so many offsprings that no wonder Hera is bitter and crancky towards him.

Artemis was like the girl that played hard to get (stayed away from guys), the only time she even got close to paring up with someone was with Orion.

The version I know is that when Hera gave birth to him, he was so hideous that she threw him off Olympus, where he was raised by some nymph. He grew up to be a great smith, and made his surrogate mother such beautiful jewelery that Hera got jealous, and brought him back to Olympus. She even gave him Aphrodite as a bride.
Yup....Artemis is one of those sworn virgin chicks ^_^
Fact of the day: According to some museum curator when I was in Greece, Apollo was born February 7, which is my birthday! :D

I once read a book called "The Big book of Godesses" and Pele was really hot, pun intended.

Hm...my favorite godDESS would have to be Athena, since she's the goddess of wisdom. That's always a good power to have...and she's probably the least mean of the goddesses, look at how she helped Odysseus out.
...whoa, Nightflower has a birthday that's literally divine! (BAD PUN ALERT) Nothin' personal, Nightflower.
And, NF, and your version of Hephastus was the one I think is generally the main myth about him, while BELCH'S is a spin-off story attrributed to him...and I just realized how big a geek I was as I typed that up...who would CARE about all that? ;)
