I feel EXTREMELY incompetent asking this... but... what is a Beta-reader?

I have several fanfictions written, can i just post them here and people would read them and tell me how much they suck? er... unless they like them of course... not that that's too bloody likely...

Beta-readers are pretty much proof-readers, editors, etc. Some beta-readers edit for grammar and spelling, others edit for content. It seems to make sense to me for a beta-reader to do both (I do), but apparently, there are writers out there who want just one or the other.

so.... if i wanted to post a story on here i could just do that and peeps would critique it?
