Last night's Futurama's "The Deep South" where they are fishing in the Atlantic held a shocking surprise. When the giant mouth bass pulls the ship under, the Professor says "Sweet Zombie *edited*." What he really says is "Sweet Zombie Jesus." Here we are again with another stupid edit concerning Theology.

Futurama fans are acting like it's the end of the world. Hehe.
It's just a phrase. A phrase you people knew would be editted. Why are you surprised?

It wasn't editted on a non-cable channel in primetime yet has to be editted on a cable channel late-night in a block that's aimed towards adults?
Personally I did not see that coming. http://members.aol.com/kimminakochan/chicken.gif

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who's offended by using "Jesus" in vain would also be offended by the words "ass" "hell" "damn" "*****" and all the other wonderful expilicits that are mentioned on Futurama and about every other AS show, and thus wouldn't be watching anyway...

One wonders... how exactly are they going to get away with the bit in "A Tale of Two Santas" where Zoidberg dresses up as Jesus Is it just going to be completely edited out, or will they let it slide? How will the episode "Godfellas" be handled because of the religious theology in the plot? Hmmm...

CN doesn't mind making fun of religion. They just can't say "Jesus" because it's..making fun of religion.
I know, it's very silly.

So they kept Zap trying to ram the space ship into a building, but Jesus is not allowed?

Remember folks, idiots do read these posts. If you want to complain about editing, don't do it by pointing out something they haven't edited so they know to edit it next time...

here's the deal - the censors consider any sort of exclaimation with jesus as profane, unless it's in a prayerful (?) way.
Sweet zombie Jesus, The censors are fools. It isn't profane at all, and many other religions are referenced in ways that might be offensive to members of those religions without being censored.

Cartoon Network's really got to get over this censoring of "Jesus".
It reminds me of when Sci Fi Channel used to air anime movies with TV-14 ratings and they would always censor "bastard" and "ass" and blur out what they presumed was nudity. :p
Yet ironically, they allowed an s-bomb to slide in one MST3K episode.

I'm a Christian and really don't notice profanities or name-in-vains simply because everyone uses them so much. I'm thinking why this was considered over the line is because they're directly addressing theology: Jesus returning from death. When it's just mentioning specific names heedlessly it's rude but tolerable, but I suppose that actually making fun of the entire basis of a religion is a no-no.
Understandable, although I probably wouldn't have even noticed it unless they didn't cut it.

Wasn't "Sweet Jesus," without zombies, a factor which helped sink the Rejected deal? That's why I saw this coming. I'm not sure I understand Cartoon Network's problem with this line, but I guess if they let it through now they'd be accused of having a double standard.

CN may have problems with a few phrases but they still allow references to religion (like in CB) and we even had a talking Jesus statue in LIII

That's just how CN is. If they let "God" get through and not "Jesus" that's what they want. Showtime beyond airs Dirty Pair with the words "Hitler" "God-Damn" "S***" and nudity while at the rating of PG, while Cowboy Bebop airs with TV-14 with "God-Damn" "S***" and nudity cut out. So just get used to it this is a CHILDREN's network not a full adult network.

Ted Turner had little to do with censoring Futurama. His role in AOL-Time Warner was greatly reduced after the merger and he recently resigned.
That's also pretty much the difference between News Corp and the Turner division of AOL Time Warner.
It isn't a matter of standards. Professor Farnsworth is the sort of character who says things like "Holy zombie Jesus." Censoring those lines does nothing but compromise the integrity of the show and the programming block. Adult Swim is supposed to be for adults, the people who understand that a fictional character saying someting that people shouldn't according to certain religions is perfectly fine.

The difference between Showime and Cartoon Network isn't that one is a "childrens'" network. Showtime is a premium channel and can ge away with almost anything because people have subscribe to it.

What really gets to me is that the censors didn't cut out the line about "All the videos were demagnetized during the Second Coming of Jesus in 24X6," which is WAY more offensive in terms of theology than "Sweet Zombie Jesus." (Think about it: Jesus came back, but the rest of Revelations was not fulfilled, which just raises FURTHER questions!) Anyways, it makes me very angry. Stupid censors, stupid S&P, stupid FCC.

but its the whole using the lords name in vain vs. naming the lord thing. It's not offensiveness we're talking about, its the 10 commandments

i wish the network would get a bunch of complaints from the loyal futurama fans about this Sweet Zombie Jesus nonsense. imagine if they got 1,000 viewers to write or call - or even 5,000. this is a perfect AS show and if they want to swim in the adult pool, they need to realize that this sort of editing (especially, with them leaving his mouth moving) isn't the right thing to do.

I think people(the Futurama Fans) are reacting a little bit to much over this.
But wasn't that one ep. of Sealab 2021 with the drunken cowboy religion taking place of Christianity about 100x more offensive?
Standards and practices always seems to be more strict with outside material than it does with stuff produced for their own network.

There's my inital reaction, and then there's the formal paper that would move all of you to tears. They're getting the formal one. You get the inital one. :p
