Batman faces off against . . . video game characters?

Episode #37 - Sentries of the Last Cosmos
Original Airdate - May 6, 2000.

Batman finds himself in a battle with 'characters' who seem to have stepped straight out of a popular video game. Can Terry figure out what's going on in time?

Holy Star Wars references Batman!

This episode was pretty fun, but not anything that I took too seriously. Featured nice action, an interesting plot premise, but it was a bit corny...

Meh, nothing great. Pretty lame and corny. Did anyone else catch the reference by Terry to "Jar Jar?"

This might be my least favorite BB episode. It was cheese from start to finish. Sorry, but I can't stand nerds, at least not the way they're constantly portrayed like in this episode. And I think it was pretty sad that Terry had any trouble at all with these chump "villians". http://members.aol.com/kimminakochan/chicken.gif

Well, they stole the plot whole cloth from "The Last Starfighter" but other than that I thought this was a pretty cool episode. Star Wars references up the yin yang, a point well taken about the excesses of fandom, and a happy twist ending (the nerds follow the true creator of "Sentries" instead of the pretender) instead of BB's normal sad/disturbing twist ending. Not the best Batman Beyond has ever come up with, but not bad either.

Just a fun fact about this episode. The score for this episode was nominated for 'Best Score' at the Annie Awards last year. I couldn't tell you if they won, but I like the fact that this episode got nominated. It was a stray from the usual Batman Beyond sound, and it sounded pretty good.

Not a big fan of the episode so far as Batman goes, it was a little silly. At the same time it was a clever idea and worth a gamble. I like to see risks being taken. Don't think it really worked.

That's neat, I did think the score was pretty cool-- sort of a stab at how every sci-fi movie has to have a big overblown "generic-Star-Wars-ish" score. Not bad.

Sorry but RATS will always be the worst BB episode ever.

This was a really lame episode. Terry should have been able to take them out right away.

I've never liked this episode of Batman Beyond. But I could never pin point what my frustration with the episode was.

But Maxie Zeus's review of this episode (http://www.toonzone.net/anbat/bb/sotlc.html) hit the nail on the head on why I don't like it, it's poorly done satire.

In order for satire to work it has to be honest with what is being satirized. The problem is that this episode isn't. The episode never admits that Corey and his friends' obsessions are unhealthy, that point was made when their obsession after being mislead was rewarded at the end by visiting the true creator. If the episode had admitted to their obsessions it would've been respectable.

Thus it leaves the episode as pointless, with no underlying theme/moral to the episode.

1/2 star

I really have nothing positive to say about this episode of one of my fav toons of all time...I didn't like it at all. It scores very low with me along with the "Rat" episode as [filler].

That's a weird reference, as The Phantom Menace would have been about 50 years in the past from Terry's perspective. Wouldn't he have considered that an impossibly "old" movie?

I haven't seen the episode in awhile, so I'm not sure how much in depth Terry referenced the plot of "The Phantom Menace", but if all he did was make a Jar-Jar reference, is that really any different from regular pop culture references you see nowadays based on old movies? Movies like the Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Citizen Cane came out before my parents were even born, but I could easily see if someone was referencing one of there more iconic lines or scenes (and I've never even completely seen two of those movies, I'll let you guess which two). The legend of Jar-Jar Binks might have become ingrained into the popular culture of the time.

But in another episode, Bruce makes a reference to "ruby red slippers", which Terry is baffled by ("Before your time").

The title of this episode got me excited for an actual outer space type sci-fi episode (even though it's not really Batman's thing, I'd have still loved it). Unfortunately, it wasn't.
