i want to start reading uncanny x-men and understand that there is a gay character, northstar, in it. thats a good thing, imo, but i do have a question. first, how long has northstar been around? any background info on his character would be greatly apprieicated. and second, was he always gay and if so how was it handled in the past? just curious to know. thanks.

star has not always been gay

however, if his creator's intent was to evolve his character over time into being gay, then that could be what happened. As far as I know, its not.

he has a sister whose name escapes me at the moment

both were professional skiers before their mutant powers were made public-- itwas even sort of alleged that he used his powers while skiing in order to cheat.

Aurora.

Byrne always left strong hints that Northstar was gay. Byrne left the book but Northstar eventually came out of the closet in #106.

Northstar's coming out was in People magazine around when #106 was published.

Yikes - that was ages ago back in Alpha? I remember the surprise. Pretty cool IMO. A good start to a more sexually aware Marvel.

Byrne was not allowed to come out and directly say it, due to then editor-in-chief Jim Shooter's corporate policies, but it was always obvious. So I, for one, was never surprised. Bill Mantlo wanted to give him AIDS, and that got shot down too (Thank God!).
Man, that was a long time ago.

There was that hint in Byrne's Deadly Ernest story.
