I'm betting on ICE AGE winning. "Cartoons are meant to be funny and for kids!"

I wish it would be Treasure Planet because it was such a plup adventure story that you just don't get often enough anymore.

Most deserving are probably the SPirit Movies. Possibly Spirited Away so they can prove they're diverse, hip and with the new times and trends.

Well... These nominees are not surprising (ugh, Road to Perdition up only for a couple?? )

:moon:

I'm betting Spirited Away will win this one. It go so many praises from critics and won so many awards from presigous film groups that it would be the biggest disappointment of the year if it didn't win an Oscar.

Miyazaki and Studio Ghibl needs this.

Ehhh, as expected, the Academy is afraid to nominate a religious-based film in ANY category. I just wish a song from 'Jonah' got an nomination instead of that stupid Paul Simon song from The Wild Thornberrys Movie. :(

Oh well.

Go 'Chicago'! :D

I have been wanting to see Chicago, but nothing in the nominations really stood out. Nice to see a couple of "comic book" films like Spider-man and Road to Perdition get up there.

Later.

Ok, the other stuff I don't care for, because most of the movies nominated I probably won't see until they come on cable.

But, how could Star Wars be nominated for just on Oscar?

Why didn't receive nods for Costume Design, Makeup, Sound, and Sound Editing.

Come on. I know a lot of ya'll will probably tell me to shut up. But you have to admit as far as sound goes the depth chargers that Jango Fett used in the asteriod scene was awesome.

No, I agree with you. I didn't like Episode II that much, but that was due to the writing and acting more than anything else. It was good in all the categories you mention. I think Two Towers is better, especially in costume design and makeup, but Episode II definitely deserved a nomination.

And yeah, what the FUDGE is up with Two Towers and Spidey missing out on a nomination for best score? Come on, it's Howard Shore and Danny Elfman, for crying out loud! I guess I can understand in Two Towers' case, since it was mostly a recap of Fellowship's score, but Danny Elfman DEFINITELY deserves some props for a great Spider-Man score.

I'm pretty much satisfied with the nominations except that usually I heard of some of the foreign films. But this year, I only recognized "Hero" since it was mentioned on another board.

Best Picture will either go to Gangs of NY or Chicago. LOTR will not get it for the same two reasons it didn't last year:

1. It's a fantasy film. The Oscar movies always involve stories about people and are realistic.

2. It didn't have a complete ending. If the third LOTR movie has a complete ending, then it has a greater chance of winning.

Nice to see Spider-man, Bowling for Columbine (which I really want to see), and Star Wars get a nomination; but I was surprised to see The Time Machine get one.

Plus I'm happy to see that the overrated Road to Perdition only got a couple.

I'm very interested to see who wins in the music (song) category and the animated film category since each choice is unique.

Anyway, I'm psyched for the Oscars as usual.

All the nominations seem fine, except for "Best Picture". Why isn't Spider-Man in there, it almost reached 1st place in box-office records(and the movie itself was pretty dang good too). All the Best Picture nomanies are just a bunch of over-rated, classy, super-high budget flicks.

"Cartoons are meant to be funny and for kids!"
Where did you hear that(or is that what you say?)

As for the Animated Picture Nomanies, I hope it's Spirited Away or Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron that wins, but seening how most of Hollywood belive animation is just a children's media, it will most likely be Lilo and Stich or Ice Age(and they will probaly say SA or Spirit:SotC didn't win because they were too serious and not childishly funny enough.)

I hope that LOTR - The Two Towers will win the prize for best film, while Spirited Away will win the prize for best animated feature.
I don't know anybody of the nominated foreign film, but I have only heard about The Man Without A Past.
Star Wars - Episode II and Ice Age should had got more nominations, do I think, while Bryan Adam's New World should have been nominated, instead of Paul Simon's song.

Eminem has made history...

His song "Lose Yourself" is the first rap song to ever be nominated for an Academy Award.

I may not like him, but credit where credit's due...he helped break down a wall today.

Sincerely,

Yeah, I'm hoping Chicago or LOTR gets best picture. Would hope Treasure Planet might take it for animated. Was rather surprised Jackson didn't get a nomination for best director, and it seems a shame that Andy Serkis wont get some recognition, even nominating wise, for his stunning performace as Gollum.

Here's the deal with Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson. I've got a strong feeling that Jackson will be nominated next year for Return of the King AND win it. Along with best picture. Why? The Academy probably feels that by giving it to Jackson and making it best picture, that that will count for all three films. As stated before, the first two films didn't really have an ending. Yes, they can stand alone, but I feel that FOTR shouldn't have gotten it last year, and I feel the same this year for Two Towers. But Jackson will be rewarded for all his hard work next year.

I have the same feeling about Scoresese and Gangs of New York. While I feel Gangs won't take best picture, they'll give Scoresese his first Oscar. And it sucks too because Gangs isn't a movie that Scoresese should win it for. He's done a ton of other stuff he should have won it for so to make up for all the other snubbs, Scoresese will get it for Gangs. It's just like Russel Crowe winning it for Gladiator when it wasn't an Oscar performance. He should have gotten it for The Insider but they didn't give it to him so instead they give it to him for Gladiator. A Beautiful Mind though it came after Gladiator is another example of one he should have gotten it for, but the Academy passed him up.

And again with Denzel Washington. There is no way he should have won it for Training Day, but the Academy didn't give him an Oscar for his other films that he should have gotten. So to make up for it, they decide to give it him for Training Day.

I don't know, it's just my opinion, but I feel very strongly about it. Here's to hoping for next year and Return of the King!

On a side note, while I really want Spirited Away to win it, it's gonna go to Ice Age or Lilo and Stitch. And now that Eminem has been nominated, will he show up and perform the song like all the other nominated performers will?

I'm glad to see Spirited Away get a nomination. Now I'm torn whether to root for that or Lilo and Stitch. I expected all these other nominations, but I'm dissapointed by the Music Score category. I too feel that Danny Elfman or that Joseph Hiashi (can't for the love of me spell his name) should've been nominated.

I'm upset that Tome Hanks, my favourite actor, didn't get nomiated for anything this year, ah well. Also, who here thinks that leo dicaprio doesn't deserve a nomination? I mean he wasn't all that great in CMIYC and GONY.

The reason why LOTR: The Two Towers wasn't nominated for best score is because the Academy has this rule that says that music from sequels can't be nominated. Why do you think the scores from Episode I and II weren´t nominated?

And I also think that LOTR and Peter Jakcson will get all the awards they deserve with Return of the King.

Yes, I was paying attention. Getting right to it, basically it's a difference of opinion.

While I really enjoyed Gladiator and did think Russel Crowe was great in it, I just don't think it's a movie he should have gotten it for. And yes, there for a pity Oscar. Insider was a great movie and while he was nominated, he didn't win it. A Beautiful Mind again I mention as something he should have won it for. But not Gladiator.

And yes, Denzel Washington's Oscar for Training Day was a pity Oscar. Malcom X anyone? Come on, he really should have gotten it for that. Training Day was a good movie, but it wasn't that good. Denzel did give a good performance, but not as good as his other nominated films. While both he and Ethan Hawke desevered to be nominated for it, Denzel shouldn't have won it.

And if anybody has pity Oscar written all over it, it's gonna be Martin Scoresese. Gangs of New York was just..... Eh.

But again, this is an argument of opinions here. :)
