A year ago i went on vacation on a cruise and they had cartoon network but it was called cartoon network LA and not the normal Cartoon Network, this CN had Samurai X every day Mon-Fri. If CN-LA had Samurai X why doesnt CN get this series? it would be great for Adult Swim.

Jeez, I thought you were talking about Samurai Jack at first.

I must be more tired than I think.

Well.. they're not going to get Samurai X..

Also, Samurai X is the OVA version of an anime called Ruroushi Kenshin. It did air on Talisman a while back, but I believe Talisman is no more..

Here's the whole deal with Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X:

During its initial run in Japan (1996), Rurouni Kenshin was a big hit. Sony Music Entertainment figured it could replicate a moderate (if not the same) success in other countries (namely the US). They decided to edit certain aspects of the show (blood, music changes, name changes, etc.) to appeal the younger crowds here in the US. They changed the name to Samurai X, dubbed it and sent tapes to interested parties in the US (Fox, ABC, WB, Cartoon Network). It was not picked up, however, so Sony basically held on to the tapes. RK ended its run in Japan in late 1997/early 1998, and Sony held the rights with a high asking price. The edited Samurai X dub ran in Southeast Asia with moderate/high levels of success.

In 1999, Sony funded four OVA episodes, and it did extremely well in Japan (it helps when it's also extremely well done). ADV came knocking, and had planned on picking up the OVAs and the TV series. However, Media Blasters, another US anime company, was able to snag the TV show. ADV signed the contract for the four OVA episodes, the motion picture and the original Japanese logo (this is why Media Blasters was unable to use the original Japanese logo outside of the creditless openings on the DVDs). ADV then decided to use the Samurai X name for their releases of Rurouni Kenshin to try and get the average Joe to purchase the title. After some initial outcry from fans (not to mention a lot of hell), ADV decided to use the Rurouni Kenshin name for the subtitled version, and the Samurai X name for the dub version. Reversible covers were thrown in for good measure (one side saying Samurai X with and one side saying Rurouni Kenshin). The ADV Samurai X went on to sell extremely well in the US - so much so that ADV funded two more OVA episodes. The RK TV series released by Media Blasters did just as well.

Samurai X will get shown on TV through ADV's Anime Channel. Toonami's shown interest in the TV series - Williams Street loves RK. Media Blasters, however, is not interested in TV deals for their anime. There's also the possibility that they can't get it on TV due to their contract with Sony Music Entertainment Japan.

That's about it in a nutshell. And in my humble opinion, while the OVAs are to be experienced by every anime fan, the dub stinks. The TV dub fares better, but is generally weak until the second season (primarily episode 28).

Riight. And we thought ADV wouldn't touch CN with a ten-foot pole too.

And there's no reason to think they will. In order to they'd have to
a. Find a ten foot pole(finding one exactly ten feet is no easy task)
b. Find someone who can carry it and has good enough aim to touch CN with it.

Plus, they'd look really silly.

I'll do it. I wouldn't touch them any other way, haha...

I've got a few questions regarding RK / Samurai X : There are six OVA episodes on three DVDs from ADV, those being "Trust," "Betrayl," and the upcoming "Reflections," in addition to the movie? Do the OVAs and movie take place before or after the series, or are they alternate universe? Should I watch the OVAs and movie before or after the series?

The first OVA Series, (Trust and Betrayal) Takes place before the series, but it is best to watch it after The Kyoto Arc.. as thats where it takes place in the Manga (Its a long ass flashback)

The Season OVA Series (Reflections) takes place AFTER the TV series and AFTER the Manga.. Its the End of Rurouni Kenshin..

The Movie should just be avoided.. its pointless and has no relation to anything..

but if your going to watch it, wait till after Kyoto..

Merely paraphrasing what John Sirabella (Media Blasters' Executive Producer) said at a con. Sci-Fi was interested in getting Berserk on air but nothing's come out of it.

Meh, we'll see.

I think you are thinking of the Cartoon Network from South America. Its not Cartoon Network Los Angeles. They play different anime there. So it may be possible that they played Samurai X there.

Actually I just found out that they play mostly the same things. They have shows on their Toonami like Pokemon, Gundam and Inu Yasha. Its pretty interesting Cartoon Network LA (http://www.cartoonnetworkla.com)

edit: sry i shouldn't have done 2 posts. I just found out that CNLA did play Samurai X and there are some other animes CN in the U.S. hasn't seen.

Meh, we'll see. And the reason why he said that is because Berserk would have had to been so heavily editted that the show would make no sense at all if it aired(Similar to the reason that they decided to not let Rayearth air on Nickelodeon.) And that's the rest of the story.

If CN can get hell to freeze(Eva on Toonami), I think they have a good shot at RK.

I see the T.V. series coming to Toonami, but not the OVA's. It's too violent, even for Adult Swim.

Wait. Did I miss something, or was everyone just speculating this would happen right before it actually DID happen?

No, Samurai X is still not coming to Cartoon Network.

No, Samurai X is still not coming to Cartoon Network. Samurai X in LA is the name for the whole series. We're getting the exact same thing, only as Rurouni Kenshin. I don't think anyone in here expected the Kenshin OVA to be on Toonami, but hell, I wouldn't call it impossible just yet.

If "tee-hee-hee" came from Nothing, it means we're about to get something very good.
