View Full Version : John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #49

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

The Intro
Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!

Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!

The Low Down:
The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm Eastern the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!

You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.

The Rules:
We ask that all users encourage each other to abide by the rules.

Rule #1
Respect others on the boards. It's one thing to disagree with the opinions of others and discuss it. It's another to insult them by verbally bashing the choices of the poll. Do not insult any choices on the poll.

Rule #2
If rule 1 cannot be adhered to, you will be warned. If the situation happens again, banning will occur. There is no strike three.

Rule #3
The moderators reserve the right to suspend the poll for a week (or more) if they deem that the situation warrants.

Rule #4
Campaigning is allowed and encouraged, but in consideration of everyone with slower connections, all images should be thumbnailed. If an image program is not available to assist in that, then they must be linked to. Any post with images larger than 300 pixels in width, will have to be deleted.

Requests:
Keep on sending requests in!!! If there's a character you'd like to see back on the poll again, send requests for that, too. Please keep in mind, if a character has won a previous poll, he or she is not eligible for future polls (unless certain circumstances apply... i.e. Batman & Superman in a group JL Shot). Send all requests to delaney_requests@toonzone.net (http://forums.toonzone.net/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=5153). Do NOT send them via Private Message. Any requests sent in via Private Message are not considered for the polls.

The Gallery:
Make sure to take a look at the Gallery (http://www.toonzone.net/comics/john-delaney/), which collects all the images done for this poll.

Got all of that? Great! Let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

USAGI MUST WIN!!!!!!!!

Sorry for freaking out for a moment, but considering how much trouble I have heard Sailor Moon has had in this poll, she finally deserves one victory. (OK, she is not Minako, but still give the Senshi a break occasionally)

What a bunch of great nominees this week.

If Manji doesn't win, I'll be happy to see whoever does (especially if it's Buffy!). :D

I can see a Two-Face drawing in the animated style any day.

Sideshow Bob on the other hand.

Think of it like this. John is an artist. He may work in one style for the most part, but when you vote for a character he doesn’t draw all that much he works hard to do the drawing. He becomes a better artist through the work, and whatever book he draws sells like mad. With good reason. The quality is super-high. Every other artist in the market builds up their mad skillz, become better artists, and makes better comics. Comics sell better; DC and Marvel get more money. (Not to mention the small portion of indies that would sell better.) DC and Marvel awesome, new, and innovative series and make great comics. Comics continue to sell better, and the cycle repeats.

All because you voted for Sideshow Bob.

Vote for Sideshow Bob. Do it for the industry.

Bob spends his days trying the kill the little twip...just to shut him up.

or

Picture Jay being a special guest-host on America's Most Wanted, critiquing Bob's latest crimes and gives it his famous review: "IT STINKS!". Bob is watching from one of those coin-op tv sets at some dingy airport, becomes enraged, and seeks to kill The Critic.

How many times has Jack been in a Delaney poll? Five or six at least. But he's never ever won. But despite that, I will keep doggedly voting for him every time.

I beg you, all you undecideds, listen to my heart-felt plea. Pity all us Samurai Jack fans out here. (Especially the Crazy Drooling Fangirls.) We've never seen John Delaney exercise his talent on any character from SJ.

Vote for Samurai Jack, and for the first time ever, let him win!!!

A vote for Jack is a vote for a Happy Valentine's Day!

Make all the fangirls out there happy!

Vote for Jack! Vote for Jack! VOTE FOR JACK !!

Ahem.

Earlier I had mentioned that we've already had several Batman-related sketches. To be fair, I thought I should go back through the Gallery (http://comics.toonzone.net/john-delaney/) to see just how many Mr. Delaney's already done. I tallied them up. (There's several crossovers. Rather than put them in more than one category, I put crossovers under the category that had more sketches.) Here's my results.
Note: I might have placed some characters in the wrong categories. Please don't kill me if I messed up your favorite! Just a gentle note correcting my mistake would be appreciated.

Batman-related:
sketches # 1, 2, 3(a), 4(a), 5(a), 12, 13(a), 19, 32, 33, 40, 45

Superman-related:
5(b), 16, 21, 30

Other Justice League:
35, 41

Spiderman-related:
4(b), 23, 46

Looney Tunes:
14, 15, 31, 37

Cowboy Bebop:
11, 22, 34, 47

Other anime:
38, 39, 42, 44

Video games:
20, 25

Transformers:
11, 16

Miscellaneous cartoon shows:
7 (Gargoyles), 8 (Freakazoid), 9 (Space Ghost Classic), 29 (Mojo Jojo), 17 (Lion-O - Thundercats), 18 (Zim), 26 (Shredder - TMNT), 36 (Ghostbusters)

Miscellaneous comics:
6 (New Gods), 13(b) (Calvin & Hobbes), 28 (X-Men), 43 (Great Pumpkin)

Miscellaneous, er, character:
24 (Beach Blanket Yoda)

After going through all the sketches, I have come to several conclusions.

1) John Delaney deserves all the praise we can heap upon him. :D

2) There is a deplorable lack of eye candy for women in these sketches. :(

3) Mr. Delaney's sketch of Jack would so rock!! Especially if he did it with Jack's hair down and kimono/gi top ripped off. ;)

4) If Jack wins this week, I hereby promise Mr. Delaney I will vote for the Green Hornet in every available poll thereafter. :D

5) Fans of MiB have been very patient. One of these weeks, very soon, MiB ought to WIN! Just not this week, please!

6) See number 1 above. Repeat weekly. :D

So, please, give the samurai a turn! Vote for Samurai Jack this week!

The way it stands now (40-32), I don't see anyone catching up to Samurai Jack's lead. If Two-Face (runner-up so far) wasn't one of the choices, I would of been undecided between Sideshow Bob and Samurai Jack.

I want to point out that I don't blame Mr. Delaney one bit. That's what the guy fans want. (I get the feeling that Mr. Delaney enjoys it a little bit too. ;) )
But my reason for pointing this out is simple. Since the Gallery right now has a healthy sampling of Fanservice Femmes, I want everyone to consider voting for Jack in the interests of fairness, balance, equal representation, uh, gender harmony and, er, no new taxes, and, uh, and so forth.

I think you guys are right. People used to be more enthusiastic about promoting the character they wanted to win. Do you guys remember when posters used to go crazy about these contests? They'd change their avatars and put links in their sigs and start up threads to gain support for the character they wanted to win. Nobody ever does it anymore.... Or at least they do it to a much lesser degree.

There's a thread in the Cartoon Cartoon forum urging people to vote for SJ. That obviously has a lot to do with why he's winning. I'm not sure if there are any other threads showing support for the other characters.

So yea, I agree. I think there are just a lot of people who've forgotten about these polls. Heck.. I forgot about them for awhile. This is the first one I've participated in for quite some time.

Well, Mr. Delaney did take a good, long (well-deserved) vacation from doing these sketches and only just returned a couple weeks ago. That may account for the lack of enthusiasm. It should pick up soon.

Then again, I did see a "Vote For Two Face" thread in the DC Animated Universe board. But no one seemed that interested and a day or so into the poll it fell off the first page.

In any case, Jack's fans have been waiting a long time for this. Whether his popularity is increasing due to his new weeknight run, or the win was just the result of un-interesting competition, I don't care. This is a mighty fine Valentine's Day gift! :D

Hey, Y.T.! Good to see you here!
Actually, it's John Delaney. But that's okay. Oh, you fixed it already. Never mind. ;)
I'm so glad that Jack finally won that I myself don't much care how Mr. Delaney's going to draw him. Although I do mildly hope that he doesn't:

or (b) draw Jack in women's clothing (e.g., Princess of Hearts  )

Drawing Jack Bare-Chested or Hair Down would certainly be nice, though...

I missed this poll. I would have voted for a character that did not interest me significantly, any way.

Well I never could decide between Jack or Two-Face but I'm glad that Jack won.

Yeah, it would look best as an action shot. But not necessarily with Aku - I think Jack hacking up some of those ubiquitous beetle-bots would be cool. :)
