Due to numerous personal requests by members of this board - I have re-researched CHASER ON THE ROCKS to discover why I made a mistake in my book.

My synopsis does indeed have the ending wrong. But where did I get such information? Find out on my updated WARNER BROS. PAGE: http://www.cartoonresearch.com/warner.html#ROCKS

Oohps -- Sorry, Jerry, I started posting after not seeing your item on the board already. Jon or Matthew can delete my thread.

I still think "lackluster" is being way to kind to this cartoon, though... ;)

Jerry,

Thank you for clearing up the fact that has puzzled us cartoon fans for years. We finally know the answer to that question: Did the Road Runner shoot the Coyote to the sun? The answer is indeed NO!

It's OK, Jerry. We all make mistakes.

So the gag was originally planned? But, Rudy decided to cram it? Oh, well.

Now, if only we could figure out what happened to the ending to HARE-UM SCARE-Um, if the original ending with the rabbits beating up the hunter is true, or if it's false, or, like CHASER ON THE ROCKS, was planned, then later crammed.

I don't think the ending was planned...WB obviously confused the ending with that of Highway Runnery when they wrote the synopsis.

For me, I just want to see the cartoon again and get my copy of the book with me.

Very interesting article Jerry! Thanks for clearing that up!

TServo's right. HIGHWAY RUNNERY's (with its Joe SIracusa/Jay Ward sound effects) always the Roadrunner that comes to mind when the "sun sinks into the west ending"is mentioned. Never recalled it in CHASER ON THE ROCKS.

Thanks for clearing that up Jerry!

Now I know that I don't need the "director's cut" anymore.:p

Well, the coyote doesn't sink the sun in that one either....he tries a rocket that blasts him into space, and ends the cartoon with a well-laid out scene of him crashing back down toward the earth and hitting before the iris out. I think that press release Jerry has is the explanation...somebody at WB goofed. I still find it hard to believe even that idea came out of thin air....perhaps the person summarized it from a preliminary script/storyboard and the ending changed in production?

The ending of CHASER looks abrupt, as if something was cut. My guess is that the script wanted to drop the sun, but during production Larriva sensed that turning day to night would have put the film over budget.

Actually, a lot of the Rudy-directed Road Runner cartoons ended abrubtly. Watch TIRED AND FEATHERED and RUN, RUN, SWEET ROAD RUNNER and you'll see what I mean.

Another idea is to update the book. Fix a few mistakes when it first came out, add Space Jam to thye movies, add the TV references and a whole lot!

DUDE! If Jerry made a book like that do you realize how BIG and THICK that piece of literature would be?! It'd be 3 times thicker than Moby Dick! (oh, dear.... that came out wrong...). I can only imagine how thick Jerry's first Looney Tunes book was. Man, I wish I could find a copy in stores and get it the easy way!

It wouldn't be that much thicker (its about 390 pages or so), and page wise, it would be about 20% perhaps? And find it at Amazon.com, there should plenty of copies there!

For example:
1. Patient Porky: The doctor's name is "Dr. Chris Chun", not Dr. Christian, and the rabbits born was not 499 but a rather high 750!

I'm afraid Amazon is currently out of them, and it's out of print at the moment. But if anyone finds a copy anywhere, buy it! You won't regret it...I use it all the time.

LOONEY TUNES & MERRIE MELODIES is officially no longer in print. That means that Holt will no longer print any further editions, and when Amazon and other booksellers sell out, that's it! It'll be a sought after collectors edition.
I'd love to update the book - I've got tons more information to add to each cartoon entry. Unfortunetly there are many reasons that I can't mention here as to why there is no updated book scheduled... However, I am working on a new LOONEY TUNES book for next fall that you guys might like...

And that means I need to run up to the bookstore and buy that copy that they have, cos I need a replacement copy badly. I've had mine since the first printing, and it's in really bad shape. The back cover is missing, the front cover has been taped on, etc.

Actually, I'm just curious what was removed from the original book when "the last hundred pages were severely chopped to shreds."

You gotta think that the book was made in 1988, and released in 1989. A lot of things happened since then. However, it would be nice for the book to be updated.

Yeah in the last few years we discovered a heck of a lotta stuff such as the three Hook cartoons, An Ounce of Prevention, Tang, Kool-Aid, and Post commericals, Porky Pig in Hollywood, the new modern shorts 1990-present, newer TV Specials from the early 90s, the Duck Dodgers series and the rare "A Dog Named Lad" Bugs commerical.
