Superhero Hype! (http://www.superherohype.com/cgi-bin/news/fullnews.cgi?newsid1044352985,99645,) report:
A Metal Men Animated Series?

While reporting that the proposed animated Aquaman is dead in the water, Animation Insider says that Paul Dini is pushing for another project to go forward...

Our source has informed us that a serious push is being made by a writer on numerous Warner Bros. animated super-hero series, including the celebrated and critically acclaimed "Batman: The Animated Series" for a "Metal Men" series at presumably Cartoon Network and/or Kids' WB!

The new series will be based upon the "Metal Men" comics, which first appeared in 1962. The comics were published by DC Comics from creator Robert Kanigher. Each comic followed the adventures of a group of superheroes, each as their name implies, created out of metal; Iron, Gold, Lead, Tin, Mercury and Platinum rounded out the group of characters.

is that true? that Dini is making a Metal Men Animated Series? :)

Okay, that's just weird...but I'll definitly support it if it's true. Too bad about Aquaman being "dead in the water" though...I really hope that's not true.

I agree. I find it strange that WB would abandon a project involving a well known character who has already had some recent exposure for one involving a much less familiar superhero group. Doesn't WB usually go for the tried-and-true, proven successes?

This is totally odd and unexpected but I admit it is more intresting than a series focusing souly on Aquaman, given he is a great character but I would rather have a series for "Metal Men".

hope the rumors are true...

Ah, animated Platinum, another female hero that I can look up to....

Anyway, in all seriousness, Aquaman sounds pretty boring, so I would like to see this instead. I don't dislike Aquaman, but there's not much I see going on in his cartoon. Ohhh, he talked to a dolphin.... Ohhh, he swam over there.... I'm sure it would be much better than that horrible example, but it still doesn't interest me as much as a possible Metal Men series.

The Metal Men are cool. :D

i wish WB Animation did have the rights to produce Marvel cartoons. In addition to EVO, we'd have Spider-Man, FF, and possibly an Avengers series...with the REAL Avengers (Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Vision, etc) not the weak team FOX had.

the superhero genre is coming back strong though, thanks to the WB: BTAS, STAS, BB, JL, TT, EVO. Now TMNT are back. Spidey will be on MTV. And we've got Daredevil, HULK, X2, Hellboy coming to the theaters. And the on again-off again Batman-Superman films.

I think anime will be taking a dirt nap pretty soon.

Aquaman was a totally ridiculous idea to have in the first place for development as a series, especially in the way they were talking about handling him.

Although I continue to fail to see why they feel so compelled as to divide their energies (Justice League would be well-served to have all the attention from all these different creators spreading themselves out in 10,000 directions,) and I continue to fail to see why they aren't concentrating on developing a GREEN LANTERN series (which would lend itself SO NATURALLY,) I would prefer the Metal Men to Aquaman infinitely.

This is a interesting development considering that Aquaman comic book is out in print.

I agree wholeheartedly. And, while a Green Lantern series would be great, what about an animated series for The Flash?

I mean that his series will be out very soon. With a comic new series and possibly an animated series, Aquaman is sure getting alot more attension than before.

There is only one problem with "Metal Men" that I can see. Only one woman. (I only remember the first series with the characters, that were released when I was a kid - boy, does that date me!) Platinum was a great character, funny and cute.

I'd say, keep the lineup pretty much the same, but see if it's possible to add one more female - let's say Titanium - for a bit better sexual balance. Since Platinum seems to be a blonde, give Titanium the voice of a no-nonsense, sharp-tongued black woman - I'm thinking a "That's My Momma" type character. (Of course, they won't use Titanium for a character - what would they call her for short?)

Um, Aquaman's new series is *already* out. Two issues so far. Since you didn't know that, I'd guess his new series isn't really causing anyone to give him more attention than before. :p

Personally I would rather see a Firestorm comic :)

But the Metal Men are pretty entertaining...especially with their relationship with their creator who is constantly dragged into their capers.

Personally, I'm glad. A teenage Aquaman swimming around the world, seeking life-altering adventure before taking the throne, was kind of...bleh.

The Metal Men however, is a good idea. They had interesting adventures, while never being too silly. They're robots/androids, so you can rip 'em to shreds each week, and no worry about "scarring the kiddies". Also, the nature of their powers would be very visual and fun. And of course, every now and then they could do the Voltron/Power Rangers thing and merge.

Not quite sure what actors would fit the voices, but I'll list the type of voices I think would work(some doing previous voice work):

Gold: Richard Dean Anderson
Mercury: Kevin Spacey
Iron: Keith David
Lead: Jon Favreau
Platinum: Olivia D'Abo
Tin:  Not sure, but it needs to be like Droopy from the old H-B cartoons. Or the old Winnie-The Pooh/Piglet stuff

No one ever said it was going to be a teenage Aquaman.

It was strongly implied if not directly stated.

The new series will be akin to the Smallville approach to Superman. The series will feature a younger Aquaman finding his way in life and discovering his abilities...[snip]...Aquaman will also encounter all new villains who will be created specifically for the series. Most of the themes in the series will be based on environmental issues.

It sounded pretty iffy to me. Sort of like Capt. Planet or something. Like others have said, the character is good, but the approach was headed in the wrong direction.

I don't know a lot about Metal Men, but I have liked what I've seen. Here's hoping it works out and works out well.

Ooh, Richard Dean Anderson? As in, "MacGyver" Richard Dean Anderson?! That would be sweet! I'm all for the Metal Men series now! I don't know a thing about 'em, but if Richard Dean Anderson's in it, I'm there! :D (I know, I know, it's probably not going to happen, but I can dream, can't I? :D )

I thought that was old news...I thought that he was just going to be closer to the age of Aquaman on STAS.

Ironically, Marvel is doing the same with a teenaged Namor, though in comic form.

I'm glad that they're (hopefully) scrapping the Aquaman idea, it sounded lame anyway. I honestly don't know anything about the metal men, but the concept sounds more intriguing than "teenaged boy learns how to talk to fish while saving the environment"... I was a big Captain Planet fan when I was younger, but for some reason the Aquaman concept just doesn't sound strong enough. Hopefully these "metal men" will deliver.

Am I the only one who find the Metal Men rediculously corny? I mean..bleah. I guess I have no room to talk though, my only exposure to them was in JLA: The Nail when Wonder Woman tore em up.

Actually, they WERE really cheesy at times. There were originally a product of the '60s. They weren't that much more corny than the Challengers of the Unknown, Doom Patrol, FF, X-Men, or any of those other teams at the time, though. In fact, that's why I think it could work as a "kids'" show. The kiddies would eat that stuff up; those with more adult tastes could smile and take it with a grain of salt - like the characterizations of Metamorpho and his supporting cast in those JL episodes...

That's a good call for Mercury too. You know what I mean - kinds "snarky", "smarmy", "undermining", "condescending"...

Mercury (said in Michael Rosenbaum's Deadshot voice): "You know, I'm the only metal that's a liquid at room temperature..."
