Muffled Sound?

Does anyone notice a bit of muffled sound in the following cartoons?:
All Bosko cartoons made in late 1933
All the Buddy cartoons
Most of the Black and White Merrie Melodies made from late 1933 on.
"Stopping the Show" (Betty Boop)
"Along the Flirtation Walk" (WB)

OK -

the surprise is NOT that the sound on these 'toons is less than perfect - the surprise is how good it is.

Remember - the sound track on a film is a small strip near the edge of the film - that prints were found with good sound is as much as can be hoped for.
