View Full Version : The inaugural Drawing Board Open - FAMOUS FIRSTS - cast your votes!!!

Frozen

Hello one and all!

Well, over the last month, several of the regular, and not so regular, talented artists here at the Drawing Board have been participating in our very first Drawing Board Open (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58987), a competition to see who could come up with the best picture based on the theme "Famous Firsts!".

So now, with these guys having sweated and laboured hard to bring you the best they have to offer, it's crunch time - it's time to vote! :D

Voting itself is pretty simple - take a look at the cool entries below, and then send your votes to me, Frozen, at mathew@studio33.co.uk

When voting, give your favourite piece three votes, your second favourite two votes, and your third favourite one vote - easy! :D

So, without further a-do, let's see the entires!!!

Our first entry came from the superlative SilverKnight!

It's Famous Firsts because it's the Final Fantasy I crew, the first of the famous Final Fantasy series. Wow, that's a lot of F's. I feel special now. :)

Not content with that cool piece, SilverKnight went one better by also submitting this equally cool pic:

This character is named Teiris, from a little-known game on the Sega Saturn named "Dragon Force". (And, by the way, yes, that cape thing is supposed to be floating around her. Check here (http://www.fuzzyfur.net/nadia/DF/teiris-c.htm) if you want to see the artist renditions.) Why is this Famous Firsts? Well, because this was the first RPG I'd ever played, and is what got me into the genre. >ahem< Take it for what you will. >bribes everybody with cookies and runs< :)

Next we have regular Drawing Board All Star Salvor, with this striking Batman Beyond picture:

Why Famous Firsts? Because I've actually redrawn an old cover I once did for an online comic that never got made. At that time (a couple of years ago) it was one of my *first* Batman drawings ever (my first finished drawing for sure). So I thought it'd be fun to rework the original piece and see if I'd made any progress at all.

Next up we have this cool pic from first time Drawing Board poster Ramso:

Okay, here's mine. I seem to be going against the grain by drawing something kinda personal...

http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/mr/mrlazell/ramsojan.jpg

My girlfriend and I got into our first fight (and I won't get into any details...) and to apologize I wrote her a letter with this picture attached (uncolored) stating that I'm hoping that the technology displayed above is somewhere on the horizon. (And in case you're curious, it wasn't a big fight; we're fine now.)

The drawing itself is based on a comic strip called The Norm (that guy in my avatar), so nobody accuse me of plagerism. (All right, I'll admit it. I stole his black shirt...) And, yes, that is Chewbacca falling off the top of my monitor. Although, if this were present day Chewie would be replaced by the Planet Express ship from Futurama...

Then the action really started to hot up with a spate of entries, headed up by the scintillating SJJ!

As a famous first, this ties in to the series of Avatars I've had and my life long love, Battle Of The Planets. What's it a first? Well, call it first touch, first love. It's that special cuddle you have when you know that both of you are going in the same direction. Nothing is quite as memorable as that moment.

Then, hot on his heels, came this entry from Drawing Board stalwart The Red Bird!

Originally posted by The Red Bird

Its Spideys first meeting with the Green Goblin.

Not content with just one entry, The Red Bird went one better with another action packed entry!:

Well heres pic No. 2.

Its been far too long since I drew Batman. This is a famous first because its based on the first episode of Batman TAS and if thats not enough for you then its the first meeting of Batman and Manbat.

On Leather Wings (http://groups.msn.com/picsidrewanduploaded/pictures.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=47)

Then, faster than a speeding bullet, came this... ahem... super entry from CaptainInfinity!:

My piece is entitled: “You’re a dreamer, Lex Luthor...”. Why is this a Famous First? Well, it’s the first meeting between Superman and Lex Luthor from 1978’s Superman: The Movie. This scene is when Superman confronts Luthor in his underground lair, and Lex lays out his plan to destroy the western coast of the United States. Otis holds the tile displaying Luthor’s new West Coast, complete with Lex-inspired cities and towns. “Otisburg?!”

Next it was the turn of TimTwoFace to to tempt us with, typically, two entries :D :

Then came this great piece from another Drawing Board All Star - Barb Gordon!:

And continuing the Batman theme, we then had this intense picture from comixboy:

Then came Caped Crusader with this colourful entry:

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, then up pops Livewire with this stunner:

My Famous First entry is of Pharoah Hatshepsut. She was the first great woman in recorded history, and the first female ruler to take on the title of king. For 20 years, she enjoyed a prosperous and peaceful reign.

And finally, we have these moody piece from Spike04!

And there you have it folks! Plenty of top quality entries to choose from - so get those votes to me, Ok!

The last day for voting will be Wednesday 5th Febuary, and the results will be posted, and the winners declared, in this thread the following Friday - clear as mud? Good, thought so... :D

If anybody has any questions, don't hesitate to PM, OK, and if anybody's inspired enough by what they see here to enter the next Drawing Board Open - then keep on eye out for Febuary's competition - "Love is... :)

Hey Frozen, just a quick question - are we allowing ourselves to vote for our own pics? Just curious, because I bet I'm not the only one curious about this.

I also thought this but didn't in the end. Took a lot. If I lose by 3 votes I may reconsider next month :p .

But, personnaly I think that should be made a rule, so the odds are more even. What does everyone else think?

James
01-29-2003, 06:53 PM
I'd like to think we are mature enough to vote for people's pictures OTHER than their own! Up to Frozen though...

OK, I didn't think we would be, I just wanted to check. :)

The two main reasons I like the voting to be secret are:

a) It's more exciting.

b) Nobody gets embarrased or upset if nobody votes for them. Only I know voted for whom, and who, if anybody, has no votes.

Although voting for yourself isn't strictly against the rules, per se, I would say it's frowned upon - in the event of a tie, for instance, I would disregard somebody who'd voted fot themselves...

Also, just to let you know, the votes are coming in think and fast now, and it's extremely close! Anybody who wants to win this competition had better start canvasing for votes!!! :D

Uh, I know this is a little late to ask, but how do we vote when a person has more than one entry? Do we just lump them together and vote for the person or do we vote for each piece seperately? (Personally, I think lumping them together's a bit unfair; because said person has more chances to get votes, ya know? >shrugs<)

I was under the impression that we were voting for particular pieces of artwork, not the person who drew them.

Yeah, that's how I voted for them, anyway. It's not fair to combine more pics for one person - it should be every picture for themselves, and the artist attached to them is secondary. :)

Votes are cast per picture, not per artist...

Anyway folks, voting has ended, and, boy, is it close!!! The winners will be posted here tomorrow... so keep those eyes peeled!!!

Anybody care to start laying bets... :D

Besides, I got my money on...well, anyone but me, to be honest. There's some cool stuff in here. I love the one with Hathsep...Hasepth...the Egyptian chick. (I'm bad at names. :D)

Well certainly I'd like to thank Tim and Salvor for their participation.... :)

I don't think you too should worry - you both had strong pieces. Salvor, your Bat pic was extremely eye catching - it leapt out at you and Tim, your Joker was both sinister and vivid. As sad as it sounds, I don't think there are any losers per se in this one...

Well, here we go, the results of our first Drawing Board Open!

Before I start, I'd just like to say how cool this whole thing has been - everybody has really gotten into the spirit of the whole thing from the artists to the people who took time out to send me their votes - a big Thankyou! to you all! :)

On whilst we're on the subject of voting, I have to tell you this was damn close, the winner pulled away by a small margin at the end, but the next few places were very hotly contested! :D

So, without further a-do, your winners are:

http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/mr/mrlazell/january.jpg

SJJ finally managed to pull clear, but only by a few votes - well done, old boy!

And in joint second place:

http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/mr/mrlazell/ff1c.jpg

http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/mr/mrlazell/ramsojan.jpg

Both Silverknight and Ramso came home with exactly the same number of votes, but, to illustarte just how close it was, we then have Livewire in fourth a mere one vote behind, followed home by Caped Crusader, again only another one vote behind!

Congratulations guys!!!

So, one more time, thanks to all who've taken part and voted, and I'll see you this time next month for the result of Febuary's Drawing Board Open!!! (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65338) :D
