So, what's the final verdict on the movie? Did Disney consider one of the greatest animated films they've done in a long time a flop and failure or is there a chance that this more deservered movie my spawn a tv series or sequel?

Or do you think they'll just put out the DVD and wish to never speak of it ever, ever again?

I think it was a flop. Big time. It never evoked a mad rush to see the movie.

As for spin offs--- im sure there will be a short-lived animated series that will roll around in reruns forever. It will go on DVD and VHS and then "Disney will put it in the vault" so HURRY! buy it now or forever hold your peace! They will say that to get you to buy it... and it will forever be that film that came out and was never really a hot ticket.

dat's my verdict.

Financially it was a flop here in the US, but with international box office sales and April 29th's home video release, it could break even eventually. I don't think we'll get any sequels or TV Series...they've got those coming for Lilo & Stitch so I think Disney will stick with that for a while.

Can you say "milk it for all it's worth"? Only Disney would milk something that made them millions, while other properties with far more potential continue to sit on the sidelines.

When you consider the box office take and the tax write off Disney took on the film it's already come close to (if not matched) what Disney put into the film. I personally have to wonder if Disney even cared to release it to theatres - considering how soon they were to proclaim it a failure and by releasing the film to an already saturated box office.

As for now though a sequel to Treasure Planet is still in the works and there were talks of an animated series for the show as well (I don't believe this has been cancelled yet - but like Atlantis shows it could take a while for the Mouse House to cancel the series).

That's good news, Joe. Thanks.... Treasure Planet was marketed horribly. Well, maybe not horribly, but I definately was turned off by that, "Go, Dilbert! Go, Dilbert!" shot they put in all the promos...

I agree. From the commercials, it seemed as if That Damned Robot was in 80% of the movie, and I don't know what they were thinking, but he's NOT FUNNY.

Disney's funny. They'll milk things for all it's worth only if they KNOW they're going to make money. Why put all your eggs in the wrong basket? Why release cheaper, lesser quality cheapquels and tie-ins from something they think is already not friendly with the public? I've hardly seen anything to do with Atlantis, and if it were true that they DO milk everything, then Atlantis would surely have a series and a real sequel, instead of a patched-together sequel made of its scrapped series.

I heard a theory about why Disney is so eager to proclaim Treasure Planet as a "flop". If they do that, then it gives them all the more reason to lay off more staff from their animation team to cut costs, so that the 600 or so executives aren't threatened with losing their jobs.

So Disney haters... if you're busy griping about how big a failure it is, you're playing right into their hands. :D

(Relax...I'm just messin' with your heads :D)

I'm more or less a Disney hater for pretty irrational reasons, but I'll always give them props where they're due and Treasure Planet deserves mad amounts of props.

Now what I'm wondering is~ Has anyone seen this movie? Not counting just previews, I'd like to know if this movie is actually any good? I rarely see movies in the theater, but I probably would have gone to see it if I did.

I absolutely loved it. If you liked Titan A.E. then you'll like Treasure Planet.

I was right up with the rest of the Treasure Planet naysayers until I actually saw it. Great visuals, and pretty decent substance to go with it- good story, good characters, except for That Damned Robot. Keep in mind that I didn't like Atlantis, and I thought Treasure Planet hit everything that Atlantis didn't.

I'm sensing an undue amount of negativity for this film.

JC and Nightflower, you hit the nail on the head. The film's comic/goofy aspects were played up (God only knows why). The more majestic parts got lost in the shuffle.

My verdict: Great film, but poorly marketed. Going up against the "Chamber of Secrets" didn't help matters much, either.

For the naysayers: remember the Zarius.

In Disney's eyes....it was a flop.

In my eyes, it was a great movie.

I know who matters more to me! :D

My scuplting class teacher worked on Treasure Planet and showed up some models he was hired to do for it. Ben, Silver and the original African American design for Jim Hawkins.

Thanks for the opinions! It looked like it had to be at least a little bit decent. ^_^ When it hits the home market, I'll probably pick it up. So far I haven't actually hated any Disney movie, and there were a few I really really liked (Little Mermaid, Mulan~).
