View Full Version : Just say no to the Disney censorship of Fantasia and other discs with letters...

I sent a letter to Roy Disney about the horrible censoring of Fantasia about 1.5 months ago...but I have yet to see a reply.
Obviously I'm being ignored, but LOTS of letters can make a difference!
What is needed is for ANYONE who is reading this post is to write a letter to Disney (The address is on the Melody Time/Make Mine Music censorship petition page) and plead for an uncensored version!
One letter and 50+ signatures may be ignored, but dozens of letters can't.
We have to show the Disney company what we think of their butchering of classics NOW or we'll just get more censored DVD's that are overpriced. We DO NOT need the censored version of Dumbo released to DVD...we need the original intended cut no matter how pollitically incorrect it is...no matter how insulting it is...this is art and it just can't be covered up with a fig leaf!

May I ask whats being edited out to cause such an "uproar"?
I know Fantasia had a scene with slaves in it edited out, whats the big deal? If it keeps from idiot like Jesse Jackson from extorting money out of them, let them take it out. It is there property and ultimately they have final say, though you as a consumer also have an opinion. The censorship of old cartoons is the least of whats causing Walt to roll over in his grave (Or, rotate his frozen cryogenic coffen :) )

I haven't heard about Dumbo being edited. Hope it isn't true. :(
As for Fantasia, the controversial scenes could have at least been included among the extra materials on the third DVD in that collector's boxed set. What gets me mad is that the cover of the Fantasia DVD says, in big print under the picture of Mickey: "Walt Disney's Original Uncut Version".
Then there's the "Fully Restored" version of Melody Time which was digitally altered to remove Pecos Bill's cigarette.

11,000 signatures got WB to take notice for Willy Wonka, I am sure this could work, too! And digitally removing cigarettes, huh? We have Marvel banning smoking from their comic books, and they also want to ban them from classic cartoons? I grew up reading those comics and cartoons and never had a desire to smoke because of them. Why do they have to do this? Lobbyists in Washington getting a fat check?

I was at DragonCon a few weeks back and sat in on a panel with Paul Jenkins in it where he brought up the new no smoking policy. From what he said, Quesada had some personal reasons to set this standard - one of his relatives had recently died from lung cancer. He also said that the cigarettes and cigars had turned into a kind of crutch for the writers. There was a distinction between their regular comics and the more adult oriented lines (such as MAX). Smoking will definitely be allowed in the MAX series from what Jenkins said.
Personally - I don't have any problem with them changing their policy on future issues - they haven't stated that they will be removing smoking from reprints of back issues.
Such is not the case with Disney - they believe in revisionist censorship...which is a real shame.
We link to a Fantasia Uncut petition on our Petition page (http://www.animationondvd.com/petitions.html) - check it out if you are interested.

We've been talking alot about this on the AniGen board. In fact, I replied to your post about it there since I felt the followers of the thread there might not see the post here. If you want, check it out.
