View Full Version : Geography Quiz

All right, here we go. Let's see how we are with geographical knowledge. We're working on an actual Jeopardy game in the meantime (with accumulating points and whatnot), so in the meantime, I thought I'd tackle Alex Trebek's favourite topic in a quiz of its own.

I'll ask the first question and, in order to ask your own, you must answer mine correctly (of course). These questions can be anywhere from around the world to REASONABLE regional questions. (Asking something like "on what not-famous street-corner is THIS place located" is considered unreasonable, for example.)

And for extra fun, let's number our questions just so we can see how much progress we make as the days, weeks, and months roll on by.

Question #1: Name the two northernmost states in the USA.

Is it both Maine and Washington State?

Daniel P

I think that the answer is Maine and Alaska.

It is Alaska and Minnesota. While all but one of the states other than Alaska lie entirely below the 49th parallel of latitude, Minnesota includes a tiny island above it.

Pilmedium is correct! ;) That Minnesota one always tricks people. Why it wasn't all under the 49th parrallel is beyond me, but there we go.

Ask away!

I suppose he passed US history it seems.

What is the largest desert in the world, and where is it located? ;)

The Detective

The Detective

Alright guys, this thread is going a wee bit slow because when people get questions right - and they know it - they don't offer up a new one or leave it up for grabs. From here on, if you don't ask a new question after answering the previous one correctly, it can be asked on a first-come, first-serve basis. That'll keep the thread moving along nicely.

OK, let's go with a new question:

Which continent comes nearest to the south pole?

-Tim

jeffrey 228
01-27-2003, 03:45 AM
South America

Sue_Jackson
01-27-2003, 04:46 AM
Australia :D

TimTwoFace

Both are incorrect, I'm afraid. Try again! :)

-Tim

I'd say Antartica...er, Antartica is a continent, right? Was the last time I checked....

Anyway, if that's correct, I offer up the following question:

Where are the Cook Islands located, and who are they named for?

TimTwoFace
01-27-2003, 12:22 PM
Ahhh, Ms. Cat, you got my trick question! ;) ANd as for yours, the Cook Islands are located in the South Pacific, and are named after explorer Capt. James Cook, who "discovered" a great deal of the Pacific coast of Canada, the US, South America, and the south Pacific. And, I'm also distantly realted to him. :)

Canada has 10 provinces and three territories. Name the three territories of Canada and their capital cities.

Three territories are
Yukon Territories- Capital: Whitehorse

Nunavut- Capital: Iqaluit

Northwest Territiries- Capital: Yellowknife

If that is right here is a question:

What is the name of the Country directly south of the nation that once held the most oil in the USSR (other than Russia)?

TimTwoFace
01-28-2003, 01:21 AM
Oooo, that's a tough one, cuz I don't know what former fraction of the USSR held the most oil. *THINKS* I'll take a stab at it and say...Turkey.

-Tim

jeffrey 228
01-28-2003, 03:15 AM
If I can give a good guess, I say Siberia maybe.

Zach Logan
01-28-2003, 11:38 AM
Keep on guessing, its a hard one, if no one knows it you can go agead and make another question and ill give you the answer later :D :D

No no, we have to get this question first before we move on. Hmmm...how about Iran?
