Sailor Moon S dub...

Well, this is the first time I saw a whole dub episode for Sailor Moon S (third season), as KWB is airing the show for a week or so.

I've always believed that Sailor Moon S was the season with the most "teeth," due to the addition of the older Senshi, Uranus and Neptune. The season spent a fairly great deal exploring their relationship and their isolation from the rest of the cast. The dialogue between the two is unusually personal at times, and the dub script seems to reflect this (though even somewhat cornier than the original if that is actually possible).

Sailor Moon has always been a tad over-dramatic, and it takes special types of voice actors to make it work. Ye Gawds, the dub acting is, uh, off. Uranus seems to be reading her lines and Neptune doesn't sound as feminine as she SHOULD. Luved the monotone reading when Uranus said, "Riddle me this, Batman..." to Neptune in their more "intimate" conversations.

The theme music for Uranus and Neptune still rocks, however.

Well, that's my observations on the dub. To those who care, as I know a lot of people here hate the show.

I predict less than 10 looks for this thread.

Most every anime I've done dub/original comparisions for shows a decrease in VA quality. Pokemon's animation works alot better with the frenetic vocal performances in the original.

Anyway, I don't love Sailor Moon but I have a few tapes of it...

Is this the same dubs that they showed on YTV last year? The ones made by Cwi?

They seriously messed up on picking the voice actor for Sailor Moon......I can't stand listening to her voice. Of course, I guess that helps bring out the annoying part of her personality, but what good is it if you can't even watch her because her voice sends you fleeing away, cupping your ears in pain?

Yes, it must be the Cwi dub you're talking about. While I wasn't too fond of the Sailor Moon VA BEFORE this one, it seemed that the new VA tried too hard to be the previous one. One thing I've noticed is that NOT ONE dub Sailor Moon VA has been able to handle her quieter moments, other than maybe the very first DIC one (who did only about 8 episodes).

As for drops in quality when it comes to dubs...fan reaction on the Cowboy Bebop dub is genuinely divided. I mean, we're talking hardcore otaku here. One camp thinks the dub Cowboy Bebop is SUPERIOR to the original, and the other camp thinks the dub is just REALLY GOOD. I'm of the opinion that both add something good to the show, but the point is that these days, dub quality can be quite good.

I just saw the dub for a recent anime, Niea_7, and that also is quite good, just as fun as the original.

So I guess I'm not a militant anti-dub guy.

I agree with you two...the dubbing on sailor Moon S is bad. I can't stand Serena's voice in the new episodes. i like the first voice actor who used to dub her. The other person who annoys me a bit is Rini. She has a major attitude problem for a young kid.
I mostly like the manga version than the television version. It flows better.

The manga's plot flows more smoothly, and there are no silly filler stories in the manga, but the characters in the anime seem better developed to me. The Rei-Usagi dynamic from the anime is missing in the manga, and the characters' personalities in the anime seem more distinct, two dimensional as they may seem. There are several main characters in the manga that are interchangeable.


I also believe the various anime seasons of Sailor Moon vary widely in quality, as there were several directors moving in and out of the show. The best run seems to be the third season and the last one. Utena fans will note that the third season's series director was also the chief director behind the Utena series and movie.

The only thing I found disturbing in the manga was Rini's obsession with her father. Also, I am still confused about Chibiusa! --Who is she? A first Ithought she was Rii's future daugther but then in the manga she becomes Sailor Cosmos --Which is the ultimate tranformation and future version of eternal Sailor Moon. Or am I wrong? :rolleyes: :confused:

Chibi-Usa is the name for Rini in the Japanese anime. You're probably referring to Chibi-Chibi, or something else I'm not familiar with.

In the anime,

Chibi-Chibi was a small kid sent by Galaxia to hold Galaxia's last ounce of "goodness" before she got dwarfed by the chaos energy she was trying to contain. Chibi-Chibi went to seek the best person to take care of her, which was Sailor Moon. In the anime, Chibi-Chibi turns into a weapon during the Senshi's darkest hour (all the Senshi/scouts are dead except Sailor Moon and the Starlights) and the "evil" Galaxia BREAKS the weapon during the fight, totally destroying Chibi-Chibi, or so it seemed.

In the anime, Rini is also obsessed with Darian/Mamoru, but probably less obvious than the manga.

Wait, I seem to recall some fans saying that Rini may grow up to be the next "Sailor Cosmos" though I'm not too sure. Sorry. After the Galaxia saga, I have no knowledge of the rest.

Man, watching it on TV still makes me want to get the R1 DVDs (subbed, of course). I just love Uranus and Neptune's cello/violin theme music...

Just for those who don't know, in the Cwi dub, Uranus and Neptune are cousins.....yes....that's why they're so fond of each other.

LOL! I guess it's better that Cwi made Uranus and Neptune cousins in the american dub. I don't think that parents would understand their true relationship. IMO, If they knew the truth they wouldn't let their kids continue watching Sailor Moon.
I find the show funny at times but I sure do hate that the Sailor Moon SS series focuses more on Rini than Serena.
