View Full Version : When did you feel you were an adult

For all of the adults on this board or who feel that they are adults:
What was the moment that changed your life. The one event that shot you out of childhood into adulthood.
For me it was when I first killed a bird for no reason and realized I had power. I cried after I realized what I did but I knew I was no longer innocent...I guess this is why hunting is normally the typical wright of passage...

Didnt we have a post like this a month or two ago?
anyway... Junior year in college (second semester to be exact)... I realized that what I was doing here was going to reflect on me out in the "real world"... I kept my playfulness and outlandish way of thinking as to my art work, but I took it much more seriously...

First time I caught up with all my bills, bought my own groceries, and worked a 40 hour week.
When I first took on the heavy burden of responsiblity and didn't shake.

Still don't.
Well sort of - when PEOPLE ASK THAT QUESTION.. :D
Nah - I love everything that I do and still like all I did as a kid. In fact I'm still trying to fulfill my boyhood dreams! Last year I got my Gatch model (to which the child in me danced), the year before my bullwhip! (yay!) - this year will be my G-Force T-Shirt!
I suppose the only way I feel adult is knowing I am one, and that I now have a purpose and direction - and that's to succeed in illustration. I find a path is the true way to defining being an adult. You no longer just swinging through life - you have a goal.

First time I really felt like an adult?
I'd have to say when I quit school. It was a big decision, and personally the best decision I have ever made. I'm not suggesting all sorts of kids should go and drop-out of school, but it was definitely the right thing for me.
{For me it was when I first killed a bird for no reason and realized I had power. I cried after I realized what I did but I knew I was no longer innocent...I guess this is why hunting is normally the typical wright of passage...}
Personally, I feel that's animal cruelty and psychotic behavior. I'm not trying to insult you, but that's the truth.

I don't recall ever feeling like a child. Seriously, there was a lot going on when I was a kid and I grew up pretty fast and didn't get to enjoy that blissful ignorance most kids do. I guess I'm making up for lost time now ;)

I'd probably say after I graduated.
Although I've been feeling old for a long time. A lot of my friends think that I'm more mature than my age.
So I come here to play and release my inner child :D

I am not an adult yet. At the rate things are going, I will not feel like one until years after the legal age.

I considered myself an adult aaaaaaaallllll the way back at my Bat Mitzvah. Don't mean I started acting like one, though. :p

Hmmm...I still don't feel like a complete adult, as I don't have my own car, credit card, and still live at home. I felt far closer, though, after putting in a good year at my current job; I was 20 at the time, and I had become one of the elite staff members and I had a lot more responsibilty (and little added pay). That was probably it.
Also, I started to do a little bit of travelling on my own, and that helped, too.

Well I know many men who have become men through the same means. Going hunting for example. In fact, there is a very famous short story on that. Killing is a part of human nature. The main difference between adulthood and childhood is innocence. Children are innocent. Killing alters your perception of reality. You are no longer purely innocent. You understand that you have power to change things. Isn't that what being an adult is all about, power. For you, it was droping out of school, you attained power. Though there must have been an earlier event where you tasted power. However, as a famous uncle would say. with great power comes great responsability...

I'm 20 and I don't feel anywhere near adult. Nor do I look it. It's a blessing and a curse.

Exactly, why should the 20-somethings be in a hurry?

I think the first time for me was that first week living on my own. When I had to go grocery shopping all on my own. And cleaning and doing all sorts of things without having my family around. It was, by the way, a very wonderful feeling. I always thought being and adult would be scary but it's not too bad.

When I walked into my school and realized all the immature people there :p

I'll let you know when that day comes. I'm almost 20 and my parents and sister treat me like I'm 14 ¬_¬...
Acutally, I can't really say that - I have done some stuff that made me feel like I was an adult. I got a part-time job in high school, I started paying for my own stuff (like clothes, CDs, etc.), I started college in the fall of 2001, my parents let me go to Europe when I was 18...

You can be an adult and not give up the things you find fun. I still dig Power Rangers for frells sake and my friend have no qualms against admitting they love a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
It's a misconception that admitting or being an adult means you stop having fun and give up things that're cool.
I think our generation is the first to get it right. We become responsible adults capable of taking care of ourselves and our loved ones, but retain that which always made us happy in the first place instead of "growing out of it".

I feel immature. People say I act mature, but I feel immature on the inside. I'm (almost) 25, but I'm still a kid. I'm in no rush, I just hope I grow up before I get married. :)

Ain't nothin' like a game of D&D!

I believed I would only become an adult when I was 18. Yeah, thats right, I was the only seventeen year old in the world who refused to be called anything but a child or a kid. I was very picky about the law back then(still am).
