View Full Version : Toilet paper: should it come down in front or in back

Ok, this is a topic that is rarely discussed unless people are fighting about it at home. How do you put your toilet paper on? So when you pull down on it, the roll comes down in the front, or do you pull the roll down in the back? I contend that having roll down in the front is not only the right way to put it on, but the only way it should be put on, and people who put it on so it hangs down in the back need to be punished severely. Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine, and I find hardly anybody knows how to hang it right in public restrooms and in the bathroom at work.

Does it matter to you? Do you get in arguments over this at home?

--we just keep the rolls out in the open standing up on the counter by the sink. Just reach over, pick up the roll, tear off what you need, and apply. No fuss, no muss, no diddling with that d***able dispenser (I have a miserable time reconnecting that little doohickey anyway once I put the paper on). You shouldn't need a college degree in physics to wipe your bum....

Hanging it down front down still allows it to be torn but you need a faster motion and depending on the despencer after it tears it can continue to spin down to the floor. Thus for me there is no real right or wrong way but I have noticed that dispencers on a angle are better are since they don't bunch as bad

Good point - why should this matter? It'
s no big deal. Just toilet paper.

Yeah..I'm with DG......it doesn't matter one bit, just as long as the toilet paper is there, who really gives a crap (no pun intended)?

I agree, and I don't really care how it hangs, but for some reason when I replace a roll, I always makes sure it hangs front out.

Remember the Simpson's episode, where the social workers take the kids away? One of the reasons was: "Toilet paper in the incorrect 'overhand' position."

In my house it was overhand, but at my grandparents (where I often stayed) it was underhand, so I guess I turned out ambidexterous.

Okay, I can now honestly say I've seen about every topic possible here. And I'm REALLY surprised so many people have responded...

It's always been in the front for me. Not that i hate people who do it otherwise or anything. It's just easier for me to get and rip when it hangs from the front.

So am I! LOL. Of course, I had no idea all of you would get into talking about pop and soda either! Guess it goes to show you anything is fair game on the General Topics board!

Its not that I hate people who don't do it my way, just wondered why people would think the underhand way would be better. I just think it looks better, and is easier to get to. I know we are only talking a few fractions of inches here, but still...I dunno why I prefer it one way to another, actually.

it is much easier to have it haning from the front. they just need to make toilet paper that is in the front no matter who you put it on. that would be neato

In my house, no one cares, but I do find that a lot of times it ends up "underhand", and I guess I tend to prefer underhand - if its overhand, I always find that as I tear a piece off, it just continues to roll and ends up in a pile on the floor - its much easier to tear it off and not have it all unroll if its "underhand".

hehehee, well, there's a little "obsessive compulsion" in all of us, isn't there? And some of it stirkes others as wierd, such as this manager I worked with at the video store who HAD to remove the caps from ALL the pens as soon as we would get our supply order in. She HATES caps on pens, and says you don't need them, so she removes them from all the pens ASAP and throws them away!

I don't like to think of it as being obsessive compulsive, but being attentive to detail. And there's nothing wrong with that. Anybody else here either obsessive compulsive about something or attentive to details?

Only when it comes to English grammar in newspaper or TV ads. I had four years of the most strict English teachers on earth, it seems - ones that would cringe whenever someone said "ain't."
So every time I see an ad that puts "you're" where "your" should be or "it's" instead of "its" - that just drives me crazy! However, when it comes to e-mail or a letter from a friend, I could care less about the grammar involved.

As for the original question, about the hanging direction of toilet paper - I always put it on so it rolls from the front, but that's just habit. I don't think it's the absolute right way.

Hmm...I wonder if someone ever wrote to Miss Manners about this...:D

This is a big deal!!!

It should come down so you can reach it easily and let it tear.

Front, back...it doesn't matter to me. As long as it's there when I need it. That's the important part. And not that single-ply, sandpaper stuff either.

I suspect Miss Manners might think the question itself was rude. :D

of course--and I always crush the cardboard roller first!! That way the paper doesn't continue to roll to the ground--and it conserves on paper---some folks will roll and roll and roll until they've got a fist full of tissure just to take care of a little three sheeter wipe!! Crush the cardboard roller and such wiping madness is curtailed!

Aren't you glad you asked?

for all-time low of topics...

I don't know about Miss Manners, but, believe it or not, in the early-to-mid 80's, this topis was discussed AT LENGTH in either Dear Abby or Ann Landers...

this kind of deja-vu I don't need

It's been the leitmotif for the past few days. Check out some of the other threads.

I'm hoping it goes away soon, but that hasn't stopped me from joining in.

Sorry, but we need SOMETHING to talk about until the new season of animation is in full swing!
