Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there can help me? I really love the whole magical girl genre of anime, but I feel I am running out of series like that that I am aware of. Can anyone give me any suggestions other than Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Saint Tail, ot Pretty Sammy? Please, only dubbed series please, I can't stand subtitles (I hate the subtitles fighting with the animation, too much work on my part). :D
I've heard of Fushugi Yugi (did I spell that right?) but from what I've heard, it doesn't sound like a magical girl series, more of a girl in a magical/other-worldly setting like Inu-Yasha. Would a fan of Inu-Yasha like this series?
Any info would be appreciated. I live in Nowhere's-ville and am miles away from anyone who's into anime, so I am very unaware of what's all out there.

I got one suggestion, how about that series Magical Rayearth I think thats what it is called?, they say it pretty good. Fushugi Yugi I never seen it, but they say it's very good. But anyways, it's going to be hard to find a dubb for the kind of series your looking.

Well if you really like mahou shoujo that much I can give you some that friends of mine who are fans have enjoyed, but keep in mind that "crapjo" is one of my favorite terms so I may not be the best person to take recommendations from. :p
Good call on Rayearth. You'll definitely enjoy that.
Fancy Lala (Bandai): The story of a nine(?) year-old who has the power to transform into a fifteen year-old pop star and go shopping. Oh, and there are flying chibi dragons. This is very similar to the other titles you mentioned.
Sugar (literal English title Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar, Pioneer): This is coming out in a few months. It's about a girl who helps out a fairy who then annoys her into paying attention to her. The fairy and Saga then go a quest for magical flower glitter.
And of course there's Utena if you liked the more surreal parts of Sailor Moon.
I just gave someone shoujo recommendations. I feel so dirty.

Yeah Comic Book Guy, I forgot about Magic Knight Rayearth. I've seen it and it was pretty good. But is it a series or just some type of OVA? The ones I saw were only 3 tapes (episodes?) long. Clamp made that right?
And to Twage, I think I vaguely remember hearing about Fancy Lala. But does it really have chibi dragons in it? From what I remember, aside from the whole kid changing to a adult thing, it seemed pretty reality based (no magical powers and/or creatures). And I'll have to keep my eyes open for Sugar, do you know who is releasing it?
Thanks.

Fushigi Yuugi is a series about a girl that goes into a book and has adventure when she becomes the preistess of an old chinese nation, who is pratically at war with another chinese nation that her friend is the preistess of. The girls don't have magical powers...not really...yet it is a GREAT series, and i think anyone can enjoy it if you can get past Miaka's horrible dubbed voice for the first 1/4 of the series...it gets better later.

IF you want to get away from the sweeter magical girl you can go with
Ayashi no Ceres - about a girl who has the blood of some ancient being. When she loses control she turns into a really angry woman with pyshic powers who just open up a can of whoop ass on everyone :D (including her own mother ). Her brother and her are involved in some sort of plot *haven't seen the whole thing yet* and things get complicated for them. Theres also a love triangle in there for you.
Love hina - its got to be magic what naru does to that poor keaitor (might have my characters mixed up here). Funny but a little bit ecchi. Romanatic comedy. Get the sub you'll feel better for it and the story is so good that you won't even notice it.
Hand maid may- funny series with a little hand sized robot maid. Romanatic comedy. Little bit ecchi,
Can't think of anything else the remotly silimar to the magical girl category. If your looking for action I got a lot more beyond that sorry.*watch ranma. you'll thank me latter*

The Rayearth OVA is in an alternate universe from the TV series and is terrrrrrrrrrrible. Incredibly horrendous. Cliched, underdeveloped characters, incomprehensible plot, nothing but some rather dull action. There aren't enough bad things I can say about it. Supposedly the TV series is better (yes, there is one).
As to the dragons, I just saw them in the opening. I don't know if they're in the show. And Sugar is being released by Pioneer.

from now on you can go back and change my horrible spelling :) just as long as you don't put words in my mouth (i.e. replacing "I hate Pokemon" to "I love the smurfs") because that is just wrong. Just put a edit sceence there. It will help everyone out :D

well i dont know too much about the magical girl anime other than the ones you already mentioned.
but you can always pick up "kara kano" or in english "his and her circumstances". its got the whole hs girl thing and its very romantic, without the super powers or transformations. but it is very good, deep, and funny. youd probaby like it alot.
plus i'd recommend expanding your anime horizons past magical girl anime, but thats just a suggestion :p . peace.

Isn't Dark Knights one or is that a manga? It's supposed to be the opposite of MKR kinda, i thought.

Unfortunately Di Gi Charat doesn't fit the criterion of being dubbed. But it is very, very... strange. In an enjoyable way.

You'd probably like the Escaflowne television series. The movie is pretty gritty, and I'd only recomend that if you're really into shonen-type anime (DBZ, Gundam, etc.), and it sounds to me you prefer shojo-types.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Magic Users Club. I think it would a PERFECT series for you to check out and luckily, a box set gets released on April 29th...all 7 discs for only $89.95.

I have been trying to get the series, but there is one problem, no volume number so I can't tell if it is the right one or not.

Princess Tutu would definately be a good one for that genre. Very cute show with a resonably engaging plot line and very nice characterizations. Highly reccomended.
I would also recomend Puchi Puri (girl who looks like she's 10 but is actualy 17 gets a chance to be a princess, very fun) whenever it comes out, once it's licenced, and if you don't mind buying fan sub tapes, Akazukin Cha Cha(Little Red Riding Hood as you've never seen it before), as it doesn't have a US release, or even a licence as far as I know, yet.

I saw Princess Tutu profiled in that Raijin companion magazine, it does sound very interesting. Sounds perfect for family TV programmers, if they ever wake up to the potential of anime (the ballet aspect might even fill a station's education quotient in its kids block).
The sad truth is that many representatives of the genere that Sailor Moon began have been pretty much ignored by American anime providers. The only one that made into dub is Magic Knight Rayearth. The only faithful translation of Card Captor Sakura is in comic book form or subtitled video, I hold suspicion that Pretty Sammy must have a dub somewhere but Pioneer has never released it (outside of the OAVs). Super Pig (AKA Tonde Buurrin) has two dubs (from the Netherlands and Phillipines), but it has never appeared in this country outside of fansubs (why, who knows, it has humor not much different from Tokyo Pig, if on a far tamer level, and a heroine probably even more winsome that Usagi). I heard somewhere that Red Hooded Cha Cha also had an English dub in the Phillipines, but again they refuse to give us anything but fan subs (oh forget your hate of fansubs, I think you won't care in this case because this anime is hilarious!). Cutey Honey Flash, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, Wedding Peach, Tokyo Mew Mew--why on earth are all these series being ignored? The Witch Sally/Minky Momo variety of magical girl is having even a rougher time, Fancy Lala is about the only series that has made the jump to America.

I have watched both the movie and the series, LOVED the series and didn't much care for the movie (I loved the new character designs, but a bit too gritty for my tastes.)
I looked up Magic Users Club, from what I saw I think that one would be good... thanks joshualane.
The series that I want to see badly is Wedding Peach, I wish it would make the jump over to the states, but as to if that will ever become a reality, who knows.....

I see. I thought you'd say that, as even Shoji Kawamori himself said that they targeted the series towards girls and the movies to adult males. But I liked both a lot.

Yeah, I don't mind a bit of blood, but when one of the first things you see Van do is sneak on an air ship and split some guys open , that's a bit much.... especially if you didn't bother to read up on the movie and how it was more aimed to the male fans prior to buying it... and were watching it with your little sister... not good...

I most definintely agree with you on the Magical Girl genre of Anime, it continues to be one of the Best animation around. :)
Have you seen these Magical Girl Anime other than those mentioned above? They are:
'Corrector Yui'
I've seen this series on 'Cartoon Network LA' , it is absolutely an excellent anime show with a Cyber-Magical girl in which she has to stop a rouge A.I. known as 'Grosser' from corrupting cyberspace.
'Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals'
This Fascinating anime movie features the desendants of the heroes from the Highly popular 'Final Fantasy' RPG's, the main character is Linaly who is a young priestess/magical girl type. I won't spoil it for you.
http://www.ffcompendium.com/low/charanime.shtml#linaly
'Magical Fairy Princess Minky Momo'
This is also one of the Best Anime series ever shown, all I'll say is that it is about a Magical girl from the 'Land of Dreams' There were two series that was shown. The first was shown from 1982-83 and the second was shown from 1991-92.

Heh heh, I second the vote for Akazukin Chacha. This series was rerun in its entirety about a billion times on Cartoon Network Asia, and it is absolutely hilarious (though sometimes part of the hilarity was the, er, spottiness of the English dub :D ) At any rate, it's one of my top three anime series of all time. I really wish they would release it commercially in the States so the series could gain more fans. Heck, I just wish they would start showing it on our Cartoon Network again. :(

I don't know if this is considered Shoujo or not... but check out Pita-Ten. By the same creator of DiGi Charat(Koge Donbo, w00t. - and PT is my fave anime. ^^; )... it has more a plot than DGC though, and a lot more adorable. X3;; Hehee! Surprisingly Cutey Honey is said to be a magical-girl title. Even its creator Go Nagi says he made it as one.
So you could try that. :tom:
