This subject got brought up in an Adult Swim thread that got (understandably) closed for off-topicness, but I thought it was interesting enough that it should have its own thread here at the Entertainment Forum where it belongs. Who is your favorite Weekend Update anchor, and why?

By the way, I'm reasonably certain that this poll includes every human being known to mankind who has ever anchored Weekend Update, but if I've somehow forgotten someone, just say so and I'll add their name(s).

Ack! You split up Tina and Jimmy! I love them together. *Flips coin* Okay, I'll have to vote for Tina.

I was never really into SNL too much before, but now I always look forward to the Weekend Update. Sometimes they bomb, but sometimes they are spot on hysterical.

I liked Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Dennis Miller, Kevin Nealon, Norm McDonnald, and Collin Quinn. Jimmy Fallon looks A little too fruity for me, and he dosen't hold A candle to those guys.

norm macdonald was the man. his delivery and voice was great. fallon and fey are good at anchoring, but the writers just aren't giving them any good material.

I would have to say Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain. Their "Point/Counterpoint" segments were classics.

My favorite is Kevin Nealon. His straight delivery was the perfect vehicle for the show's mix of silliness and satire. These days, it's more silliness.

Out of the ones I've seen I had to cast my vote for Kevin Nealon. He was funny, clever, witty and his subliminal editorials were just clever as heck.

"And that's news to me."

I voted for Collin Quinn... I've always found his commentaries consistently funnier than the others...

Eeeh, yeah I liked Colin too. I like him okay in general as a comedian, but he didn't seem like the SNL Anchor type.

My all time favorites will ALWAYS be: Kevin Nealon (I'm suprised but glad more people think so), Dennis Miller, Norm MacDonald, and of course the man himself who made it all possible who is Chevy Chase and you're not.

All that remains is voting for one!

Chevy Chase will always be my favorite! He started it out and he did it best, course I also liked Jane Curtain. But I don't think anyone was funnier to me than Chevy. Course, as a general rule, I like the older SNLs the best. But Tina Fey does a pretty good job herself.

Oh man, I loved Norm Macdonald so much! Back when I was in 10th grade and Norm was still the WU anchor, me and my buddies used to watch him on there all the time. Then in European History class we got a project where we had to do a news report about something in European history. So we made a video that was like one small part about European history and then the rest of it was all just bits we stole from Norm. For some reason we got a 100 on it!

Probably Norm MacDonald!!! :D

Nealon did an excellent job, so I voted for him. He delivered in a manner very similar to a real news anchor, which I think added a lot to it. Others tried to do that, but I don't think they managed as well. Norm and Dennis Miller also were good, though they weren't as real news anchor-y and had more personal touches. I'll have to admit I'm probably biased since those guys are the ones I'm most familiar with, though.

Norm MacDonald was the only thing that kept me watching SNL during those years. When Quinn took over, I thought he was terrible and quit altogether.

Dangit! Why couldn't this one have a checkmark option? I have many favorite WU anchors (NOT just limited to Jimmy and Tina both of whom I met last night and they were SO nice! XD) - Chevy Chase, Norm MacDonald, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtain, and Colin Quinn.

I found last night's WU to be hillarious - it was even funnier seeing it live :D

There can't be more than one check because that's the kind of diabolical S.O.B. I am, I wanted everyone to really have to think about it and have to justify choosing just one favorite over every other. (-:

Oh, and I chose to split up Tina and Jimmy because there have been other pairings before that have later split up and had just one member go it alone, so since I split up those pairings I felt it only fair to split up Tina and Jimmy as well. Sorry, Tina and Jimmy fans. (-:

Dennis Miller: Very good overall and probably my second-favorite (he was one of the only reasons to watch the horrible '85 season, too! :p) He was also one of the rare cast members that was basically known only for Weekend Update. In fact, I can only think of one skit he was in.

Norm McDonald: Very cool, but his "hold for applause" routine got old (mostly because so many of the jokes bombed, which was half of why it was cool, but it grew tiresome, I found)

My top choice: Kevin Nealon. He's the man! :D He has a great Leslie Neilsen quality about him (without resorting to "cheap laughs") and I always found he was one of the more professional members of any cast he was a part of.

I guess I'm in the majority. Norm is by far my favorite. I just like his delivery. And I enjoyed how he would weekly prove once again that "Germans love David Hasselhoff".

It's funny, cuz it's true, it seems! I know a German couple who think he's wonderful. They even have some of his albums. We've all heard him sing and though he's not a bad singer, he's nothing special! :p

i went with good ole kevin nealon. he has to be arguably the best anchor as he made absolutely no mistakes that i can recall. his mr. subliminal sketches were hilarious too. too bad he suffered the same fate as norm mcdonald as in present day he really has no set job. for shame

Actually, Kevin has had his own show on TNN called Conspiracy Zone (http://www.thenewtnn.com/shows/conspiracy/index.jhtml) for a couple of years now. :)

Yeah, I'd rather be unemployed than host that show, though. (-:

Who are those three people who voted for Colin Quinn? They need to have some body parts broken. :D

I'm going with Norm McDonald overall, because Norm's personality made even the crappy jokes funny.

Kevin Nealon runs a close second in my book, for (unlike Norm) a stronger consistency of funny material.

Then Colin Quinn came along, and was the sheer opposite of Norm, in that even the funny jokes became unfunny when he told them.
