Disney is saying that "Beauty & the Beast"'s DVD is being put back in the Disney vault Jan 31st for ten years. In these commercials, it also says some of their DTV releases are going into the Disney vault, like "Return to Never Land" and "Cinderella 2." Why are they being called "classics" in the commercials?

Beauty and the Beast is a classic, but Return to Neverland isn't

It'll always be easily obtainable on ebay

If I remember correctly, they said the very same thing about Snow White....and it's still available. Don't fall for their promotion scheme, cause all it probably means is that they will no longer distrubute new copies to retailers. How silly would it be for them to recall all the left-over DVD's come Jan 31st? They know those DVDs will sell eventually, but they're just trying to scare you into buying them now rather than when they go on sale in a couple of months.
So, unless you are worried about there not being enough copies in your city of choice come February, ignore the commercials.
DisneyBoy has spoken.

I don't think the "cheapqules" should be part of classics line at all. They just came out fer cryin' out loud! They should be put in A seperate vault titled "B projects". And another thing. Those commercials are to scare you into buying them at full price before they end up in the bargin bin, or on sale.

I could care less.
I got the 5 Disney animated films I want on DVD...Snow White, Fantasia, Pinocchio (I'll get the SE, too), Dumbo, and Fantasia 2000.
I'll contemplate getting the 1940's package films once Disney de-censorizes them.

Because "classics" helps make people think that they are worth buying.

Every single movie that Disney release they put 'Walt Disney Classics' on the cover... even for stuff like 'Oliver and Company' and 'The Black Cauldren' ( at least they do in the region 2 zone ).
It's as if they can't admit that they've made a few bad movies.
BTW, I bought 'Fantasia' recently - can anyone tell me exactly what's been censored?

First there's this:

some downloads

Another scene was completely redone for the DVD release. As Bacchus, Greek god of wine, attempts to climb a flight of stairs in a drunken stupor, he is assisted by a number of black and white child centaurs. If you watch the VHS release from the early 1990s, the scene is very badly and awkwardly panned, resulting in a very jerky picture; but the black centaurs were successfully edited out. In the DVD version, the scene is apparently in its full frame; however, there are no signs whatsoever of black centaurs (they kept the White ones, nice double standards huh?). Whether the scene was reanimated or digitally edited to remove the black centaurs, I don't know.
And another "stereotypical" black voice was dubbed.

See this is whats confusing to me. They claimed way back when that only the platinum editions would follow the practice of being put on moratorium. So Peter Pan is here and isn't a platinum yet its being thrown back into the vault. If I hate anything about Disney its the way they are constantly back-pedaling on everything...

About the Fantasia censorship...
The shots are censored as follows:
1. Shot of Cenataurette coming hair and looking at nails. This has been zoomed in to crop out the black cenataurette shinning her hooves.
2. Shot of cenaturettes looking out flower window. Right as the last one comes up, the shot zooms in to crop the same cenautarette from the first shot
3. Shots of black cenataurette sneezing into flowers were replaced with other footage
4. Scene with BC following another cenataurette is motion controlled to hell. The camera is repositioned so that it constantly is moving to keep the BC from being seen. At one point, the image is out of focus and is disturbingly grainy.
5. Shot of Zebra Cenatuarettes pushing carpet up stars is digitally altered to remove zebras. Thus, the carpet rolls up by itself.
The 1991 VHS/LD version used looping and substituting footage to cover up certain scenes.
umm....you do know fantasia is censored, right?
Sadly, yes. I recieved The Fantasia Anthology as a gift, which I have indeed enjoyed. When I view Fantasia, I always skip The Pastoral Symphony segment because I refuse to watch the censored version. If I had 2 DVD players, I'd put the Clair De Lune short in its place from the Fantasia Legacy 3rd DVD.

Actually "The Black Cauldron" (A film I like) and "Oliver and Company" (A film I don't like) are part of the "Classics" range we get here in the UK. The Black Cauldron is the 25th "Classic" and Oliver and Company is the 27th.
Film's like "Little Mermaid 2", "Return to Neverland" and "Lady and the Tramp 2" aren't part of the Classics collection and if you look at the DVD/VHS cover they do say "Walt Disney Pictures Present's..." instead of Classics. Disney are just saying in the advert that their Classic to get you to buy them.
If you want a list of the 42 fully animated "Classics" (or as the American's call them "Gold/Platinum Collection") title's that Disney has released (up to Tresure Planet) I will gladly put the list up.
Is it both the Region 1 and 2 Fantasia DVD's that are cut or is it just R1?
We cant get "Make Mine Music" or "Melody Time" here in the UK on DVD yet so hopefully when they are released Disney will put the stuff they cut from the R1 DVD back in.

I find it hard to believe that Disney is canceling DVDs of some of their sequels.

That is shameful. It will be a long time before 'cheapquels' can truly be considered classics.

I don't think Disney actually concider them Classic though, that's why there not called Classics on the DVD/VHS sleeve. I've seen the advert in question and they do use the term "Classic" very losely when referring to RTN and C2.

It's a shame Fantasia is censored in R2 because normally we don't bat an eyelid about things like Stereotype's and smoking but I bet that "Make Mine Music" and "Melody Time" will both be censored when they come out over here :(

Yeah, I know ( I live in the region 2 zone ).
On the subject of Disney - is 'The Rescuers' available in the US? It's available over here but when I checked Amazon.com to see if the US version was the same I could only find 'Rescuers Down Under'
BTW - thanks for the info on the 'Fantasia' censorship guys

That's odd - it's been on sale here for months. Is there some kind of legal issue holding the US edition back? ( I know that there was a recall of US Rescuers VHS tapes once )

No idea, although if Disney are aware of it then I seriously doubt it.
To be perfectly honest, if they've removed it then I can't say I'm sorry. I don't really appreciate that type of immature humour from bored animators ( same goes for the so called 'dirty frames' in WFRR - although removing anything besides them is a crime IMO )
I don't agree with editing movies - but removing something that was never meant to be there in the first place is a different matter. ( Like when they digitally removed the car from LOTR on the DVD )

They should not use the term at all. How can a new movie be classic, by any stretch of the imagination?

exactly!
Fantasia 2000 and The Rescuers Down Under are the only sequeals I would allow to be called "Classics".
