I just got Mask of the Phantasm on DVD on sale at Warehouse! 13 dollars anywho....
I noticed that the picture quality of my MOTP DVD is significantly more grainy than my ROTJ DVD. It kinda upsets me considering I get DVDs for the higher picture quality. I think it might be because BTAS used a different coloring technique. Or possibly because MOTP is an old DVD and maybe the technology wasn't quite as good. I have no idea what, but I think the MOTP picture is messy.
Anyone else noticed this? Or have MOTP on DVD to confirm what I noticed?

my MOTP DVD quality is great..I dunno what your saying. Maybe I'm just used to watching the crappy VHS copy I own... (Note: MOTP was my first DVD, and convinced me to buy DVD's from now on). They both look great to me..Dunno..maybe you got a bad copy?? A bad copy of a DVD shouldn't exist though..got a way to take screen shots?

I love the quality of the MOTP DVD. And I'll tell you why it isn't as good as ROTJ. MOTP was made for VHS. DVDs weren't even on the commercial market yet, to my knowledge. ROTJ was made with them KNOWING it would be on DVD. Also, ROTJ was animated by a different company (rather than WB Animation), whose name I can't remember.
Anyway, the MOTP DVD is DEFINITELY better than the VHS. Oh, and BB? MOTP was my first DVD (well, besides ROTJ), too.

Like most of you, MOTP was my very first DVD. I think the quality is great. If only the menu option had alittle more to it.

i know what you're saying Tim, the quality of MOTP isn't as sharp as ROTJ, but not every DVD is going to look exactly the same. It depends on compression, how much work they put into restoring the original film (such as Se7en, which they went back to the original negatives to remaster it so it looks better than ever on DVD, but not everybody takes such care in transfering to DVD.) Even if it doesn't look as sharp as the ROTJ DVD, its still heads and shoulders above VHS and that's good enough for me!

I think I may know why your copy seems "grainy." It's not your DVD, it's actually your DVD player. When I first bought MOTP on DVD (which BTW was also my first DVD) I played watched it at my girlfriend's house. The graininess was the first thing I noticed, especially that part where we first see Andrea Beumont. Her red lips looked extra grainy.
My girlfriend's DVD player is one of those DVD players built-into the TV. So when I got home, I wanted to watch MOTP again and noticed how the quality miraculously imporved.
Try watching it again on another DVD player, see if the quality improves. If not, well... it's worth a shot anyway.
