When I look back at the show Timm and his crew has done. He's done almost both a series premiere and finale except for Batman. Why? None of us deny that Batman is the first and best of Timm's shows. But apparently we didn't get a series premiere or series finale.

Batman Beyond and Superman TAS didn't have series finales either. "Legacy" was almost meant as a new beginning for a darker season of Superman, and Batman Beyond's "Unmasked" wasn't much of a finale, nor was it intended to be. It was just held back after 911.

I guess the reason Batman TAS didn't have a series opener as such, was because it was the first series they did, and the norm was to just produce regular 22 minute episodes.

I think they covered the grounds with both Mask Of The Phantasm and Return Of The Joker. The former showed how it all pretty much began, and the latter showed how TNBA ended and in my eyes gave an open ended finale to BB (yeah I know there was the third season after - but I always look at ROTJ being placed after as Terry's ultimate initiation as Batman...

I think the two start and end BTAS continuity well.

I agree with SJJ... also, "On Leather Wings" wasn't like an official introduction or whatever, but it wasa a great introduction to the nature of the character.

Even though it didn't get a series opener/finale, it still got 113 episodes, whereas Superman got 54 and Batman Beyond got 52. That's not a bad compromise, is it?

I agree! "On Leather Wings" established all the regular characters(except Robin...and he came later on) and it est the tone of the series. And since it was the first episode produced, I sorta consider it as that. But, I also like the Mask of the Phantasm/Return of the Joker angle(both of which I watched today, just FYI).

the great thing about BTAS was its one-shot approach

unlike Spider-Man and X-Men, you didn't have to commit yourself to it to know what was going on. Back in those days I didn't have a vcr. There'd be days when I'd miss Spidey and X-Men and I would be clueless as to what had transpired. Like a friggin soap opera. That's why I gave up on both...well that and crappy animation. For the most part, BTAS can be viewed forwards and backwards with no hitch. Just jump in and enjoy.
