You can listen to the interview on 1/7/03 at 8-11 P.M. at the WFMU website, www.wfmu.org LIVE! Yup yup yup! The interview may range from 30 minutes to an hour, but I dunno the actual time it will start. just listen from 8-11! Any questions you want to ask him/her?

As the webmaster of The Samurai Site, I must say...

IhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyou.

Jealous ranting aside, three questions:

1. The farting dragon episode. Uh... wha?

2. Are they intentionally inserting a whole bunch of Jack fangirl fan service, or is it just a coincidence that Jack gets his gi ripped and exposes his manly pectorials every other episode?

3. A status report on the Jack animated movie, please... is it dead?

By the way, I see on that radio station's web site that they archive a lot of their shows. If we can't make it to the interview on time, will it be available for download later from the web site?

Not that us fangirls are complaining, mind you. :D But I am curious about that also.

Anyway, if you can, ask him what the significance was of the "Elephant Fairy" from Episode 24. Whether it was a reference to something, or if they made it up. That was just odd, and it's driving me nuts. :p

Hey, I like the fanservice, too!

Here's what I'd ask:

1) What adventures will we see Jack having later in the series?
(I'm always interested in what will happen next to Jack.)

2) Will there be an animated movie or OVA/OAV? (Aww, you know what I mean!)

3) Why does Samurai Jack appeal to women, as well as men?

And don't forget to grill him real good!

Gee, does anybody actually need to ask that?

I mean, just *look* at the guy!

I definitely second that idea. I REALLY want to know whether that was a reference to something.

About the faerie elephant, I was wondering that too, so I'll defintly ask it! :) yeah um these questions, uh, i might not ask some of them for obvious reasons... oh...i think i know the resons he takes off his gi. it is because to take off extra weight. what about the farting dragon do you want me ask? Why was it made?

I have to ditto most of these questions! Although I know whoever-it-is probably can't say much about episodes that haven't aired yet.
So how about one of these?

- What prompted the choice of the outline-less design? Just a desire to be different, or something more than that?

- Why has the way Jack is drawn changed? (That is, from the way he looks in the early episodes to the way he looks now.)

- Is Jack really supposed to look like Professor Utonium, or was that just a coincidence?

- Why does Jack wear a kimono or gi or whatever it's called, rather than traditional samurai clothing?

- What were the ideas behind some of the odder episodes we've had? In addition to "Jack and the Dragon" and "Jack in Wonderland," say, how about ep XV, "Three Jack Tales."

- Does someone on the production staff really like Vikings, or what? (Several eps have featured Viking-like fighters.)

- And what's up with the running gag about blue monkeys?

Eh, that's enough for now.
But be sure to tell whoever it is that the show does have many enthusiastic fans. The show simply rocks. The music, the design, the stories (most of them) are fantastic.
And that women from around the world think Jack is dead sexy.

Okay, I knew I'd come up with more questions given some time...

- When the show's animation test was made, there was absolutely no humor anywhere within the sequence. But as the actual series progressed, more and more humor was slowly being added. Was this intentional? Or did it just develop that way? Was it the original concept for the show to be a lot more dead serious than it is now?

- Did the network executives approach Genndy with the idea of a live-action movie, or was it his idea to them? And if it was the former, what was his initial reaction to the idea?

- Given that the show is so unique and violent in nature, I can't see an animated movie doing well in theaters. At least not yet. If the animated movie has been scrapped, as I've heard in certain rumors, then would it be wiser, or even possible, to pick it back up some time in the future? When audiences become more accustomed to action animation?

- And I agree with Donna. What's with the blue monkeys everywhere?? :p

Perhaps there is an ardent Colts fan on the animation staff.

Or, maybe Mojo Jojo is slipping some artwork in when nobody's looking.

Here's a question that just needs to be answered because there's just too much confusion over the issue:

How many seasons are there and where do the seasons end and begin?

Sweet! I am going to be!

As for the questions, I only have one.

"Do you have planned or have any plans to have a companion for Jack in the later episodes or will he just get help when needed for the entire run?"

Just something I thought of.

I would like to know if there's any plans to make the music from SJ's soundtrack available on CD.

Er, I hope you don't mind me answering that for you. I remember reading in one of the May 2002 issues of the New Yorker magazine, Mr. Tartakovsky (or someone) said that he saw an old anime movie (The Boy and the Dragon?) where the film was so old, the black ink around the characters had faded a lot, and he thought it made them look realistic and cool...or something like that.

Eh, I wish I could remember more about that article, darn it. :( Ask it and they'll explain it to you better. ;)

And I don't have any questions. Everyone pretty much took the ones I could think of. :)

Well, you know that and I know that, but does he/she know that?

And I just thought up some more questions for Sammy:

1) Does Jack get a lot of fan mail?

2) There are references from other 'toons on Samurai Jack, (e.g. Huntor in "Episode VIII", the exo-suit used in "Episode XXVI," the "Talking Dog Says" sign in "Episode II") but, so will Jack be doing any cameos on someone else's toon (e.g. PowerPuff Girls or Dexy's Lab?)

3) Will any of the characters from last season (e.g. the gangsters, the Miner Dogs, the Triseraquins, and, of course, The Scotsman) be making a return appearance later on?

No, not at all! That's why I think it's a good idea to have folks suggest questions like this in an open forum. That way if there's a question that another knowledgeable fan could answer, that question can be answered here!
And Sammy can save his valuable interview time for the really important issues.

BTW: The refered-to Genndy Tartakovsky article is in the May 27, 2002 issue of The New Yorker. You might find it worth reading in preperation for this interview.

And yes, it was Mr. Tartakovsky who got inspiration from a faded copy of 'The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon.'

I only have 2.

Is Samurai Jack popular worldwide?
And if picked up for a 3rd season will Jack destroy Aku?

Donna lady
01-06-2003, 08:05 PM
Oh, I just remembered another one.

Can they say what Aku is, exactly? A demon, a demi-god, an alien being, what?

I really don't mind this. What drooling fangirl would mind this? :D Hey, Japanese cartoons have their panty shots and cleavage shots for the guys; why not something for the girls? I want to enjoy this while this shows still on the air. Genndy et al. do a fabulous job with making Jack droolworthy in looks and manners. Keep it up!

I think Albright's peeved because there isn't much female eye candy in SJ.
;)
Just kidding! Just kidding!

Anyway, Sammy, here's an article with an interview of Genndy from back in August. http://www.canoe.ca/TelevisionShowsS/samuraijack.html

Reading it might suggest some more questions to you. Say, for example, like here:
With 52 episodes of Samurai Jack complete, Tartakovsky is now looking forward to ushering his creation onto the big screen in both an animated and a live-action feature.

Or this:
New episodes will continue to be made, until the day when Samurai Jack eventually winds down. But when the end of the series does come, will Jack finally defeat Aku and make his way back to his own time?

"I don't know," said Tartakovsky, in a tone of voice that suggests he does indeed know. "It's a quest, you know. We'll see what happens."

Have a wonderful birthday!

Interesting interview. Hope you had a blast.

Just a word to the wise. I know your greatest dream is to have Genndy see your webpage and put in a good word for you. But, trust me when I say that no show creator wants to listen to a plug, regardless of the age of the plugee.

Plus, I'm not sure of the legality of a person working in show business to see someone else's material, because then that could lead to lawsuits. Not that you would. But that's how Hollywood works..

I asked for it though. Tom is a funny guy.

Anyway, it'll be archived soon, so I'd say that someone will transcribe it soon.
