View Full Version : It's official: Pokemon is coming to Gamecube

Yep, it's true. We all knew this was going to happen sooner or later. However, there's a catch. Read this article courtesy of Gamers.com:
According to Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Nintendo is planning to release a GameCube version of its child-hypnotizing, cash-sucking RPG series, Pokemon, in Japan before this summer.
Details are still scarce on this as-of-yet untitled game (we'll call it Pokemon GC from here on out), but the newspaper did release two very important points, which we've kindly laid out for you below (cash-conscious parents, sit down before you read the second one):
1) Pokemon GC will retail for less than the cost of a standard first party Game Boy Advance game (4,800 yen, or about $40).
2) Pokemon GC will only operate when coupled with a Game Boy Advance and one of the two upcoming GBA Pokemon games (Ruby and Sapphire, both due out in March in the U.S.).
While Nintendo has been keen to incorporate connectivity features in its GC and GBA games in the past, this will be the first time they actually require gamers to own both consoles in order to play.
Judging from the info released thus far, it sounds like Pokemon GC may wind up as more of a supplementary disc for owners of the GBA games (along the lines of the N64 Pokemon Stadiums) rather than a full-on "real" RPG. Disappointing, but not at all surprising.
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were released in Japan on Nov. 21 and have already sold through an alarming 2.7 million copies.

This doesn't sound good at all...
I hate how all "3-D" console Pokemon games are not real Pokemon games. (The cloest that came to being worthy of buying was Pokemon Snap). This new disc sounds like nothing more than an extra forty bucks for every Pokemon obsessed kid who has a GC.
When are they going to transform the original pokemon into a three-dimensional RPG adventure with real-time fighting? Or make a completely new Pokemon adventure for the GC?
Yeah, right...
I wonder how much fun that would be?

It just sounds like another Stadium game, however I think Nintendo might do something cool like make the entire world in the GBA 3D. The only downside might be having to leave your GBA on for a long time unless it does like Animal Crossing and loads GBA Info into your GC disc so you acn cut it off while you play.

Maybe this disk, is actually an add on. You know, a brand new island.

I wonder what this would turn out to be? It would be great if it would turn the whole GBA game into 3D. Or it'd just be a new place to go in 3D format. Time will tell.

I totally agree with Vortex. The ORIGINAL Pokemon (aka Red/ Blue) should be made into an RPG for the N64, or now, the Game Cube.

Even if it is just another Stadium, if it has online play there will be no stopping it.

If it's online that would change things for me. It could be stadium, for all I care.
Imagine if they would make it for online play. Oh man, that would be sweet.

If it was Pokemon online in any form, I'd really think about getting it. I really want SSBM online, but Pokemon Stadium online would be just fine with me.

Well, gee, naturally. It's obviously too much effort for them to make a REAL Pokemon game, isn't it? Seriously, I'm getting sick of Nintendo's laziness in the area of home console Pokemon games... Why not give the Gamecube a 3D Pokemon RPG, like the GBA game, instead of this half-assed stuff? Bah.
And this is such a blatant order for gamers to get both GBA Pokemon games that it's not even funny.

I don't think any of this is entirely official though.
These are only the first details and from what i've read on other sites, it's not that reliable.
Nintendo does a lot of that add on crap, but they rarely make any requirements. Nothing that big anyway.
I think it'll be like the pokemon stadiums. You can play them without the GB games but they just wouldn't be complete that way.
Either way, I'm also extremely annoyed that nintendo won't even consider giving pokemon the full on 3-D RPG treatment. I just can't understand why they pass on the opportunity to make something that could be so great.

This is just my imagination going here....
Yeah, it'd be so cool. You could have one of your Pokemon walk on screen with you like in Pokemon Yellow and wander around those huge city's (on your bike or skateboard). As you wander the grasses during your journey the people you run into are other players online, a few computerized players are in there that hold special items for you.
As usual in each city there's a hub where players can link up for battles but with this new tag team and two on two fights system it's even better. You can even have the option to wager money or items or badges(if you want).
Man oh man an online 3d Pokemon game would be so freaking sweet. And Nintendo knows it would sell like hotcakes, it would push up GBA and Link cable and GBA Pokemon Sales and modem sales and it would just be an awesome buisness move as well as gaming experience.

I dont think it would be a good business move. Nintendo has always pushed pokemon games at a younger audience. And younger audiences dont really have the money for the modem and the cost of on-line gaming. Heck, I'm 16 and I cant afford to do on-line gaming. But I will agree, your vision would be a great gaming experience.

Parents, parents, parents.. LOL Still, while it's aimed at kids. It has a rather large following with older gamers. Online gaming won't cost much. PSO is 10 bucks a month. Your telling me you can't get 10 dollars every month ? Save 2 dollars a week and give it to your mom in exchange for a 10 check.

While my interest in Pokemon has died years ago, I think that if it went online on Gamecube it would be cool. You could design your own Trainer and Gym and people can visit you and vice-versa. Of course there would also be battles and you can trade Pokemon.
A full 3d or Cel-shaded adventure world would be awesome for Pokemon. Come on Nintendo, make a real Pokemon game on GCN!

You'd get to do more than just battle. If itw ent online I'm sure that Nintendo would have the smarts to include a trading system. Like say anyone who has an extra mew some how would be able to unload it on one of his/her friends.

I just got a PS2 yesterday. I really havent explored any of my on-line options yet. 10 bucks sounds reasonable. I guess if nintendo would take the time and develop a stylized, well planned 3D rpg, it might sell pretty good. But if I had money to bet, I'd say they'll continue to give us lame, half assed games like stadium and puzzle league, which it looks like we're getting anyway.

Eh, that wouldn't interest me either, collecting things isn't fun to me.

Something I know will likely never happen with this: it'd let you create a pokemon from scrap and make it's status and name. With that you can trade it to others online. Now THAT would be sweet.

Well obviously you wouldn't like Pokemon period since a huge part of it is collecting monsters. So uh just go away. :p j/k

An online Pokemon RPG would kick ass, and would definitely be a killer app online title for the GC. That is, if they ever get off their butts and actually make it. My vision of a perfect online version of Pokemon would be a bit similar to PSO, with the Poke Centers being "hubs" for Pokemon fans to hang out, chat, or buy stuff and heal their Pokemon. There would also be tons of different towns with new Pokemon gear and equipment available, including all of the locations visited in the Game Boy games. And finally, all of the dungeons from the other Pokemon titles would be included, and players would be able to team up with one another to battle other trainers, along with Team Rocket bots. (Hell... Let the players play as Team Rocket members if they want to!) And of course, there would be monthly special events occuring in the online Pokemon community, like an official tournament, or chances to catch Mewtwo, Mew, Celebi, etc...
That would be great. But I somehow doubt that it'll ever be made. Psh.

Oh, it'll be made...when it's us in control of the videogame companies...It will be made. For we know what we want and we will make games for ourselves...screw the next generation. Let's serve ourselves!
Oh, wait, that's how companies think now... :p

a little dissapointed, i was hoping for an official GC RPG that could connect with the GBA, i hope this is still the order of the day.
don't you think it's kind of odd that this game is to be released before the summer in japan and yet we've seen NOT ONE picture of it. I kow Nintendo is tightlipped about their games and reveal pictures slowly, but I think this is a new record!
