Since it doesn't explicitly say we can't talk on manga in the must read thread, and because many successful series are based on manga, I figured I might as well drop a post about it.

So, who here buys it? Who are your favorite authors? What series are you currently keeping track of? do you buy any of the manga magazines (Raijin, Shonen Jump)

I buy it on a semi-regular basis (a couple volumes a month, because that's what I budget for it), I particular enjoy the work of Leiji Matsumoto and the Artist Team CLAMP and I'm currently reading Chobits, Angelic Layer, Clover and Galaxy Express 999. I picked up the first issues of both Raijin and Shonen Jump, and I'm tempted to subscribe to one or the other. It's a tough pick.

I don't buy manga. {Random gasps} I've just never been a big comic book person.

My favorite series is currently Blade of the Immortal. My favorite author is Rumiko Takahashi (who doesn't like her work?) I don't buy any magazines, but I'd like to check out Shonen Jump sometime soon.

I don't buy it, but I check it out of the library, on account of manga costs like $15.95 and I'm almost always broke.
I currently read:

Cardcaptor Sakura
Magic Knights Rayearth
Fushi Yugi
Galaxy Express 999
X/1999

The only manga works I'm a really a fan of is CLAMP.

I've trekked down to LA just to pick up manga sometimes, even if it was in Japanese :D I'm a novice when it comes to manga, only got GW, CCS and...that's it. Anyone recommend any good authors or series to pick up? I really want to get my hands on Outlaw Star.

On the cost of manga: I'm almost tempted to learn Japanese and start buying imported manga because that's still less expensive than translated manga. My local anime store has the whole of CCS in japanese for 35 bucks. The translated series would run about 120 (granted I've already close to 300 on the DVDs).

Whatever happened to Tokyopop being "100% Authentic," anyway?

Battle Angel Alita is my big thing. When I saw the anime I became instantly obsessed with cybernetics, so when CLAMP started in on Clover, I became obsessed with that as well (though I, too, am poor and must borrow the volumes from my best friend). When Blood: The Last Vampire 2002 came out, I was all over that, even though it's semi-hentai.

My favorite artist is Yukito Kishiro (Battle Angel Alita, Ashen Victor) because his art looks so real and he injects so much philosophy into his storylines.

BTW, where do you guys live where manga is available at your library??

I highly advise you check it out anyway. You're missing out over nothing.

I was slightly irritated about the name changes, but still... the story's intact and the action has made a sudden fan of cars out of me. I mean, I could care less about cars before, but now I'm check out out the specs and names of every car I see.

Look at it this way.... you "protest", all you're doing is depriving yourself of a good read while others go on to enjoy the manga.

Not to mention the futzing with the names seems to've lightened up suddenly and heavily after the first volume.

I'm kinda curious about the anime now, I just don't wanna be let down by it like I was with the Love Hina anime.

Most anime are never as good as the manga. They either add to much on or take too much out. Thought there a few that are just as good if not better than the manga I just don't rember what they are.

I'd say Angelic Layer TV is very comprable to the manga, if not a little funnier and a little more poignent at points.

all the manga ive read are from CLAMP, Clover is probably one of the best ive read, all it needs is an ending :tom:

another manga from CLAMP that everyone NEEDS to read- CHOBITS.

actually, TPOP took out some parts of the story. all i know is theres a girl that becomes a prostitute, and that apparently plays a big part in the story. what TPOP did was they took that whole situation out, and they went back and re-draw the character, lengthining her skirt so her panties wont show.

Chobits the Manga is definetely stronger than the TV series IMO. Much more intelligent when it comes to talking about the relationship between persocoms and humans. Less filler in the manga too, though some of the filler in Chobits TV is pretty cool (the clip episode is not).

I love CLAMP and Rumiko Takahashi, but lately I've been absorbed in Yuki Kaori (Angel Sanctuary, Count Cain) and Shoko Matsu****a (Yami no Matsuei). Chiho Saitou (Utena) is a very good artist as well.

Remember how the anime was like religion on acid? The manga tosses in heroin, cocaine, and morphine into the mix. By the time I finished it, my head was absolutely spinning, and the ending is confusing as heaven and hell.

The artwork is absolutely FANTASTIC though.

Well, I only know the classics, but my favorites are:

Lupin the Third -
Much darker and more risque than the anime, a funny and always engaging read.

Golgo 13 -
Much, much better than those awful anime versions. One of the longest manga series ever (been going nonstop since about 1968) some of the stories are a bit similar but there's usually an interesting twist, and always plenty of bloodshed.

Yuki's works are wonderful the art is soooooo wonderful. Clamp is another one of my faves. I currently reading Yami no Matsuei the art there is pretty as well. Chiho Saitou has some other wonderful works that I've seen I'm also into Yuu Watase her works are another on my faves list.

I haven't gotten into manga as much as anime, but right now I'm reading Akimi Yoshida's Banana Fish, which is really good. I have Vol. 1-6, and the 7th came out in December. It's published by Pulp.

The only thing that I don't like is that they've flipped the images. However, they first started printing the books in 1999 - was flipping as big an issue then as it is now? In any case, I'm glad to see them stay consistent throughout the books.

I also have some manga volumes in Japanese:

Mahou Tsukai Tai, Vol. 1-4 (this is the series published by Asuka Comics DX)

Unfortunately, I've been unable to find translations for any of these volumes. :( I'd really like to read them, as there is another character in the manga who was not introduced in the OVA or TV series, and the manga story has more of a shoujo tone. The artwork is lovely!

Wedding Peach, Vol. 1, 3

Another lovely manga! :) I've been collecting these as it is hard to find much related to Wedding Peach these days. I've been able to read some of the chapters of these books thanks to text file translations. I am really hoping to be able to find the other volumes in this series - there are six volumes in total.

Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1, 2

I have read a couple of translated chapters from fan translations, but am planning on following the run of Yu-Gi-Oh in Shonen Jump. I just wish it wasn't so expensive to subscribe to the magazine (I'm in Canada).

Ah, manga, yet another thing upon which I can spend way too much money (sometimes I just "borrow" it at the local Border's and read it in the cafe with a hot cocoa :D )!

Currently, I'm following - in graphic novel form, as they come out:
Inu Yasha
Fushigi Yugi
Ceres
Marionette Generation
Marmalade Boy
3 x 3 Eyes
Love Hina
Revolutionary Girl Utena

I've also read some Steam Detectives, Silent Mobius, GTO, Futaba Kun Change, The Big O, Parasyte, Vampire Princess Miyu, Speed Racer, Video Girl Ai, and Ranma 1/2.

I generally love Rumiko Takahashi's stuff, especially the Rumic Theater short stories.

I've heard good things about CLAMP, so I tried reading Wish, but it just didn't grab me. What's the best thing by CLAMP for a newbie to read (I want to give them a fair trial)?

If you like cyberpunk/sci-fi: Clover
If you like male fantasy series with a dash of sci-fi: Chobits
If you like magical series: Cardcaptor Sakura or Magical Knight Rayearth
If you like battle tournement series: Angelic Layer

I'll note that language in both series can be sorta coarse at times.

I bought the dvd on impulse @ best buy. It's not just ecchi, it's utterly bizarre. Granted, telling Alice in Wonderland in 15 minutes with a heavy dose of perversion shouldn't come out as anything less than bizarre though I guess.

While were on the subject of CLAMP's trippier side, Clover, with it's utterly non-linear story and generally mysterious tone, is also a trip. Also, I've seen HK bootleg posters that have the X logo on Clover images. Granted, there were also some Trigun Love Hina Posters too.

JTurner, I got a subscription to The Big O, but so far, I've been intensely dissapointed with it. The art and the writing just hit me as kind of... meh. Not the replacement for the anime I was hoping it would be. I'll stick with it though.

I have a subscription to a couple of manga titles... Evangelion and Big O, and I actually like EVA better than the anime. I find the manga far less irratating, and in manga, there's no such thing as cheap-looking animation.

I'd like to get a subscription to one of the big manga magazine/anthology thingies, because they're a GREAT value, but neither Shonen Jump nor Raijin comics really has a lineup that appeals to me. I wish Tokyopop would do there own monthly thing... I'd like to check out Initial D (I'm a car fan). How is it?

But doesn't this whole thread belong in the comics forum? I'm pretty sure you can discuss manga there.

Howdy folks. I've been kind of turning a blind eye to this thread so far even though officially, manga discussion was supposed to take place in the Comic Book Culture forum.

Well, I've run it past the Powers That Be, and manga discussion is now officially allowed at the Anime Forum. So go forth and discuss that wacky art form that's read from right to left without fear of this thread being relocated or closed. Huzzah!

I love Takahashi and Toriyama stuff. I subscribe to Shonen Jump and buy manga series which look interesting. I would subscribe to Raijin if it wasn't so expensive.

I'd also like to get into Tokyo Pop manga, but I must admit to feeling slightly burned by the Initial D thing. However, I would have picked up the Kodocha volumes already if I could find them anywhere but the internet. I'll try GTO too, if I can find the first volume.

I read too many American mangas (ie US comic books) to fit in much manga. If I have some extra or a series looks intersting, I'll pick it up. I like to get the collected volumes.

Right now I'm pissed off at Viz. I was getting the single issues of Big O for a crappy price, but then they came out with the much cheaper trade paperback. Actually, TokyoPop did this with the first Bebop volume, but I think they leanred and don't have single issues anymore. I rather liked what TokyoPop has. Those $10 manga volumes are great. I love the size and everything.

One neat series from TokyoPop I checked out is 'Preist'. It's actually "Mahwah" (Korean comic books), not manga. I suggest it for fans of Hellsing, Hellboy, and Trigun.

As for series not out in the states yet, I'm following the fan translated Hellsing and Read or Die mangas. They're really good and as good if not better than the animes. I haven't finished reading the issues I got for either though.

Heck, I bought a raw copy of R.O.D. at a local Japanese book store because I couldn't wait for a translated copy. Hurm.. does that legally give me the right to download a free translation? I know my roomate bought some raw One Piece manga. I know that's in Shonen Jump now, but I'm hping for a collected trade. Plus I'm interested in a Naruto colelcted volume too.
