View Full Version : quick question about dvd players

I watch DVDs on a PlayStation 2, and I've noticed that on many of my DVDs, during sequences that have sudden bright flashes (i.e. fight scenes, or characters taking pictures), tracking marks appear on screen for about half a second. I've always thought this was a disc problem, but even new copies of the same disc have tracking marks on the exact same part. That pretty much brings me to think that the problem is the PS2, and not the discs themselves. Since none of my PS2 games seem to have this problem, I'm gonna use my dad's DVD player to watch movies instead.
But my question is, when those tracking marks occur, does that damage the CD (causing tracking marks to appear permanently during those scenes), or will it only occur when I watch it on the PS2?

Since the discs are read without contact, no wear occurs, and is not something that'll become permanent with it.
The only time in which damage occurs is when something physically touches the surface.
-- Kane ... in my instance, a flex cable was improperly installed and eventually created some permanent grooves in a few of my discs. :(

Thanks a lot... I was getting kinda worried for a sec since the DVD player isn't hooked up yet and I hadn't been able to see for myself.

I have had that same "problem" with my Toshiba and Malata DVD players, the exact same thing when there is a bright flash on the screen. I think it has more to do with the TV than player, tho I am not sure how to fix it, or if it can be fixed. I learned to not be bothered by it, but I did wonder about it at first.

It is sort of a bright flash, but there are also lines, similar to tracking, that flash across the middle of the screen for about half a second.
But you bring up a very interesting point, the TV I watch it on is about six or so years old and is pretty much wearing away from overuse. I'll look into that, thanks.

Exactly what happens to me, and my TV is about as old as my DVD player (a new modle). I got both in the same month.

I don't mean this rude, but was it a cheap TV? That might explain why your DVDs have the same problem.

I had that problem on my Toshiba SD 2200 and PS2 (when I had it.). I haven't had any problems with my $50 Apex AD-1200, though.

Probably middle of the road type modle. It is a Sanyo, tho, and not a Phillips. It's going to work for me until the widescreen TVs go down in price!

So your problem was the DVD player, and not the TV? I'm all confused now... :p

An Apex AD-1200 is a DVD player. The problem was the Toshiba and PS2.

Oh okay, I thought the Toshiba model you mentioned was a DVD player.

Well, those flashes might have to do with how you have your PS2 hooked up.
If you have your PS2 hooked up with the stock RCAs (the cables that end with red, white and yellow inputs) that come with the PS2, and you hooked them to your VCR, then that's your problem right there. Your PS2 has to be hooked directly to your television set for superior quality for DVDs. Its almost unoticable on PS2 games (even ones with DVD-ROM technology), but its easy to spot with DVD movies.
I suggest you hook your PS2 RCAs to the television set directly. If you can't do that (most old TVs can't), then go buy an RF Adapter switch (like the kind that SNES and Genesis came with). The RF Adapter switch connects right to the TV via serial cable. That should fix your problem.
{But my question is, when those tracking marks occur, does that damage the CD (causing tracking marks to appear permanently during those scenes), or will it only occur when I watch it on the PS2?}
It doesn't damage the disc in any way. Its just the way they play on your PS2.

It is connected directly to the TV, so I'm willing to bet the TV is the problem. It's just not a very good TV nowadays.

It's very annoying, and scared the crap out of me when I first saw it, since I assumed it was the disc. But I've been looking at buying a new TV anyways, so now I have a pretty good excuse... :)
