Do you think 2002 was a good year for animated movies/shows?

Do you think you have seen the best from Hey Arnold! to Treasure Planet?

No. Nothing innovative whatsoever. 2D is still dying in the theatres, and TV animation isn't any fresher. Somebody hire me, please.

Yes & No

Disney finally made what 2 orginal toons this year?

No.

All the 2003 animated releases except Lilo and Stitch have done very poorly and with good reason.
As for TV Toon Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nick have all gone way downhill.

It's Been Hell For American Animation This Year.

Yes and no.

On the upside EofE and Spirted Away are brought to the US, G Gundam and Classic Zoids premire on Toonmai, and ADV brings anime onto a premium channel.

On the downside Spirted Away does bad in theatres, G Gundam and Zoids are replaced by DB/Z reruns, the anime channel only premires in Philly ( :D ), and Slam! the worst block of television ever ditches Zim for Super Duper Sumos.

Overall I had a lot of fun this year but I'm still waiting for the day when anime and cartoons in gereral gets appreciation from adults and that bad rep "cartoons are for kids" gets replaced by " parents and kids watching Toonami".

The cartoon industry needs to take some smaller steps if they want to succeed. Now a days they just shove bad cartoons down our throats.

As far as the Dribution of animation (on tv) i think it's been a great year. Eva and Nadesico on UK digital tv, CNX, Adult swim all round great

as for all round content and events in animation it's so-so
the rumors conserning Disney's practices, Beyblade (BLECH!!) Armada sosf. I'm not sure.

I have to be a little more detailed here..

Yes for Disney Channel.

Why? Kim Possible

It brings in great ratings, its original. and one of the best things and most intresting was that it's fanbase doesnt consist of little girls like disney thought because it's fanbase officialy consits of any age from 7yr olds to adults.

It's prolly one of the best Disney-TV toons since the disney afternoon shows.

It's already obvious Kim Possible was an 'upside' or change for Disney Channel. and will most likely continue to be in 2003.

Now for other channels with toons, No. because alot of them got rid' of their best toons. or decided to make a movie for it when their fanbase was already dying... but of course Disney Channel had ALOT of downsides in 2002. but we won't go into that :)

I think it was a fairly decent year. I especially enjoyed Spirited Away, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Treasure Planet. Three gems IMO. Comercially it wasn't great, though... only Lilo & Stitch seemed to be a hit with the mainstream.

This year was so-so.

Good:
Disney finds success with "Lilo & Stitch", and "Kim Possible".
Time Magazine ranks Adult Swim at number 5.
More animated films are in the running for the Oscars.
Warner Bros. release "Return Of The Joker: Uncut"
He-Man is back, and better than ever.
Scooby-Doo returns with "What's New Scooby-Doo".
ADV Films launches The Anime Network.
"Ice Age" convinces Fox that animation can be profitable.
"Justice League: The Savage Time"

Bad:
Warner Bros. Drops the ball on promoting "The Powerpuff Girls Movie".
Di$ney drops the ball by giving "Spirited Away" very little promotion.
Baby Looney Tunes. Need I say more?
"Treasure Planet" bombs at the box office.
Di$ney continues to ruin it's legacy with more "cheapqules".
"Transformers Armada" has yet to find it's groove.
Di$ney's continuous downsizing of it's animation staff.
The loss of Chuck Jones, Tex Henson, and Ward Kimble. RIP.
Universal continues to churn out "Land Before Time" sequles.
Nick cans "Invader Zim" in favor of "Super Duper Sumos".

The Good.

Lilo and Stitch finds success (hopefully proving that traditional animation can still rock.)
Kim Possible premeired and much to my suprise was really good.
ADV announces anime network.
Toonami airs Zoids Chaotic Century (I love this show.)
Adult Swim expanded to two nights a week.

The Bad.
Nick cans Zim (what were they thinking.)
Treasure Planet bombs at box office (and it was a really good movie IMO.)

I think Ice Age was released late last year... anyone have a date on that?

March 15th, IIRC.

Was 2002 a good year for animation? Let me think:

Lilo and Stitch
"Fillmore"
Ice Age
"Tokyo Pig"
Treasure Planet
the myriad of fine animated programming on "Adult Swim"
"Best Animated Film" at the Oscars

I'd say so, yes.

To me at least, 2002 was a good animation year. Spirited Away and Lilo and Stitch were pretty darn good on the big screen, and I've yet to see Treasure Planet, though I haven't heard good things.

This year saw a new season of Justice League, carrying on the fine BTAS tradition, and an episode that stands with the best of the previous DC series.

And even though the new Transformers is a disappointment, WE"VE GOT NEW HE-MAN! This is a great new series that captures everything that endeared me to the original as a kid.

And this was the year I discovered Adult Swim. So I got to see Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, and Yu Yu Hakusho which all quickly became some of my favorite toons.

Plus you've got X-Men Evolution, Jackie Chan, Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, and Samurai Jack to name a few quality cartoons that have had new episodes. Not too shabby.

If only Family Guy was still on, we'd be set. :)

Ice Age (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0268380) was released this year.

Most of my good and bad list has already been said. I'll just add that Futurama is cancelled and this is the last season, leaving a dim sign for adult animation on network television (Bad). Also, companies are started to import more anime because it is cheaper and brings in ratings. This is a good or bad because it gives anime fans more anime, such as Gundam and Inuyasha. However, it is also filling up Saturday Mornings and companies are making less quality American animation. Overral, I thought it was a bad year for animation, though there were some high points, like Justice League, Lilo and Stich, and Adult Swim. Unfortunately, this is outweighed by a lackluster Saturday morning, the fall of adult animation on network television, Disney's continuation of cheapquels, mediocre Simpsons, and a continuously worsening Nickelodeon.

Despite the few bright spots in the animation industry it could have been a much better year.

The Good:

Lilo and Stitch
Spirited Away
Newtype USA
Announcement of ADV’s Anime Network and TechTV’s Anime Unleash.
The Powerpuff Girls Movie
Adult Swim continues to be strong

The Bad:

More Disney cheapquels
Poor marketing for The Powerpuff Girls Movie and Spirited Away
Saturday Morning Cartoons has pretty much disappear off the face of major network channels
Cartoon executives continue to make stupid decisions (Eg. Canceling the popular Invader Zim)
Fox Box
ABC doesn’t seem to know that to do with Saban’s entire library of shows
Cartoon movies that shouldn’t be made in the first place (Eg. Hey Arnold!, The Wild Tornberrys)
Treasure Planet fails and Eisner publicly blames his directors for pushing the project

No, I do not think 2002 was a good year for animation. We got the premiere of Baby Looney Tunes. There were cheap animated movies based on television shows that did poorly at the box office. The Disney studio made more stuff I do not care about. There is more.

The fall of adult animation on network television? Fox's Sunday night animation block is still doing decently, and make no mistake about it, adult animation on network TV has really always been ALL ABOUT Fox up to now.

Maybe you mean "non-progress."

Fox cancelled Futurama, and no other channel has any other adult programming. NBC and WB aren't even trying anymore, while they at least attempted with God, the Devil, and Bob, Mission Hill, and Oblongs ealier.
Plus, Simpsons is still very mediocre. I like King of the Hill, but it isn't as good as Futurama or Family Guy. After Futurama is gone this season, only King of the Hill and Simpsons will be the only adult animation on air on network television.

I overstated it with "fall," but it is worse than the last couple of years and now most channels aren't even trying.

Good:

-Adult Swim extends to two nights a week, aquires Yu Yu Hakusho, Inu-Yasha, The Ripping Friends, The Oblongs, and Mission Hill, announces expansion to 5 nights in 2003 and the aquisition of Futurama, Trigun, Lupin the 3rd, and REIGN

-TNN announces their adult animation block and rights one of Nickelodeon's wrongs by giving John K. full control of Ren & Stimpy for 9 new episodes and a TV Movie

-Adult-oriented Looney Tunes shorts announced to be in production, along with the series of Duck Dodgers

-ADV launches the Anime Network

-Disney launches Kim Possible and releases Lilo & Stitch to theaters, two of the most original projects from them in recent memory

-More and more anime hits American shores uncut: Excel Saga, Fruits Basket, FLCL, Trouble Chocolate, GTO, Steel Angel Kurumi...

Bad:

-Disney bombs big time with Treasure Planet (which I actually liked)

-Nick cans Invader Zim to make way for Dexter's La-er, Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius

-Futurama unofficially cancelled

-Evan Dorkin's pilot for Eltingville Club declared dead

-Rejected pulled from ASC two nights before it airs

-Chuck Jones & Ward Kimball die

-Baby Looney Tunes
