View Full Version : What is so offensive in "The Framed Cat"?

Mammy-Two-Shoes is only on screen for ten seconds, and her only dialog is "Thomas! Is that you messin' around in the kitchen?" and "Thomas! Get in here and catch this chicken stealin' mouse!" This and a few other cartoons where Mammy hardly appears at all ("Dog Trouble", "Puss n' Toots", and "Polka-Dot Puss" come to mind) would certainly liven up the T&J show. What they should do is play ONE T&J, and fill the rest with an MGM one-shot, and an other cartoon with another MGM star (Droopy, Barney Bear, or maybe even the Captain and the Kids).

What's offensive about "The Framed Cat" is Mammy herself. I guess being a black housemaid is considered racist, I guess. If they edit Mammy, the cartoon would be very hard to follow. Even the new "dubbed" version is rarely shown, only late at night.
Please leave Mammy alone!! She's loved just the way she is!!

I think there should at least be one non-T&J MGM cartoon per show. It could air in-between the two Tom and Jerry shorts. I doubt anyone would object to a Droopy or Barney cartoon being added to the mix. It sure would add to the variety. I rarely pay attention to the T&J show much anymore. However, I think we should be glad CN brought back a few long unseen Tom and Jerrys into the rotation, like "The Milky Waif", "Two Little Indians", and "The Little Orphan".

Yes, it is. But CN didn't air it at all for a long time before that.

Mammy has a small part in FRAIDY CAT - which was very important to the plot, and they edit her scene out. If they can show that cartoon regularly with her scene edited out, why not THE FRAMED CAT?

Because by editing Mammy out, the whole dynamic of the cartoon is changed. In the edited version of "Fraidy Cat", Tom is seen lurking about, then suddenly disappears. Jerry then pops up out of the flour and scares himself. I dunno about you, but after cutting Mammy out, this 'toon really doesn;t make any sense at the end. The same could go for "The Framed Cat" - by editing Mammy out, it would very hard to follow.
Try imaging "Mouse Cleaning" without Mammy. Now that would be difficult to comprehend!!

They could do a fake zoom-in when she's on screen, so we can't see her...

So what you are saying, Thad, is that in order for the T & J cartoons with Mammy to be broadcast outright, they could just "zoom in" on whoever's in the scene and not show Mammy, right? Have her become an 'off-screen' presence? Better heard, not seen, correct? Again, the dynamics of the cartoon would be changed.
Imagine seeing "Old Rocking Chair Tom" or "Part-Time Pal" without Mammy at all, just an off-screen voice.
Wouldn't be the same, would it?

Judging by what they always show of Mammy, do you want a close-up of that??

Well, I'm not saying "zoom in" on Jerry with the chicken like a camcorder, just like this:
After Tom runs from Jerry, do a cut to a closeup of Jerry, as if it is a different scene. We'd still hear Mammy, but we just wouldn't see her.
If CN is afriad of offending blacks, even with her voice dubbed, they could do freeze frames on characters, like when Tom looks over into the other room in "Puss n' Toots", freeze him, and cut to the shot of the female kitten in the next scene, when Mammy is out of the room. However, this SHOULDN'T be done if Mammy has a major role in the picture.
Like Jon previously said, CN has been nice and brought back some more T&J goodies into the regular rotation, including the titles he mentioned and the cheater T&Js (remember how seldom THOSE aired?). It would be nice if they played the MGM remakes though. The only one we see any more (and rarely airs) is
"Millionaire Droopy".

lislebartman, I KNOW that the ending of FRAIDY doesn't make much sense since it's edited. The point I was trying to make was that editing out Mammy scenes that have something important to do with the plot didn't stop CN before.

Some other ways CN could liven up their Tom & Jerry show...
They could show the CinemaScope cartoons in letterboxed/widescreen format. Who here wouldn't tune into T&J more often if they could catch these cartoons the way they were meant to be seen... and the way they haven't been seen in years?
The Filmation Droopy cartoons are sometimes shown on the Droopy show... so, why not show some of the Filmation Tom & Jerry cartoons on the T&J show for the sake of variety? I caught some of these during Boomerang's T&J marathon awhile ago, and they aren't all bad. The recycled music and animation gets annoying, but they are more true to the spirit of the MGM T&J cartoons than those made-for-TV Hanna-Barbera ones (which I found really boring).
