The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has announced it’s nominees for it’s 14th annual Media Awards.
The awards will take place in three ceremonies to be held in New York City on April 7, 2003 at the New York Marriott Marquis; in Los Angeles on April 26 at the Kodak Theater; and in San Francisco on June 7 at the Westin St. Francis. According to the organization, the Media Awards recognize and honor the media for their presentation of fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect our lives.
"Diverse media images continue to display the broad spectrum of our lives and stories, and this year's Media Awards nominees testify once again to the culture-changing power of those images," said Joan M. Garry, GLAAD's executive director in a statement released with the nominees list . "This past year, 'The Hours' and 'Far From Heaven' offered a window on our families and struggles; HBO's Real Sports' interview with openly gay former NFL player Esera Tuaolo and Court TV's gavel-to-gavel coverage of the landmark Kantaras v. Kantaras transgender custody case increased understanding of the reality of LGBT experiences; and 'USA Today' and 'National Catholic Reporter' coverage of the Catholic Church sex-abuse crisis exposed attempts to scapegoat innocent gay priests. Individually and collectively, this year's nominees made a powerful case for fairness and equality, and it's our privilege to honor them."
GLAAD Media Awards nominees were published, released or broadcast between Dec. 1, 2001 and Nov. 30, 2002 (with the exception of film category nominees, which were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2002). Nearly 1,000 media projects were considered in 23 categories
Nominees for outstanding comic book are:
The Authority
Green Lantern
Murder Mysteries
Strangers in Paradise
X-Statix

Out of those, if I could vote I'd pick X-Statix. I just liked how that storyline was handled.
I haven't read Murder Mysteries, though, and I haven't picked up Strangers in Paradise in a long time.
I thought Authority's big gay revelation happened last year. What makes it worth nominating this year?

I'd bet good money Green Lantern gets it. The others just brought in a Gay character, I think (I'm not 100 % on them all), but GL dealt with the whole "beating because he's gay." A big message story arc. Something like that is a shoe-in to win. Not to say it doesn't deserve it, as it was a pretty good arc, but it seems the others wouldn't really have much a chance over it.

Hmm... no idea which one should win it for sure (since, admittedly, um...I didn't read any of the above-nominated books...). Gut feeling would give it to "Strangers in Paradise" or "The Authority" alone, though I figure "Green Lantern" (the one book I don't like) will win this one...

X-Statix is the group of 2nd generation mutants who were also known as the X-men spin-off team"X-Force".

In that case the current Green Lantern creative team CERTAINLY deserves the honor! :D

I don’t really care for the name X-Static. I realize it’s just a play on words for “Ecstatic”, but I still think “X-Force” is better. Of course I never liked the X-Force book so I shouldn’t really be talking. I know they’re trying to distance themselves from anything that was associated with Rob Liefeld, but even so.
And what is “Static-X”?

CaptainInfinity I totally agree they should of just kept 'X-force' as the title. I think “Static-X” is a rock group.

Cool about the X-Stuff and all but can we go back to who you think will win the 'GLADD' award?

Anyway, I really feel The Authority should win. It’s such a violent book so I doubt it will happen, but Apollo & Midnighter are two excellent characters. Their relationship started out as a joke; “What if Batman and Superman were gay lovers?”, but it’s evolved into what I feel to be the best romantic relationship in comics today next to Reed and Sue Richards. I truly believe Apollo & Midnighter love each other, and I actually care about these two characters. The dedication they have to one another is special, and certainly rare to find in any fictional romantic relationship, straight or otherwise. I really hope the book continues, because I’m deeply interested in how A & M’s marriage will turn out. They’ve adopted the infant Jenny Sparks, so not only are they a homosexual couple, but they’re new parents as well. Not to mention the fact that Midnighter is one of the coolest vigilantes of all time. It’s ironic that a spoof of Batman turned out to be a better character than the Dark Knight himself, at least the current Dark Knight. This is all just my opinion of course.
If Green Lantern wins I will be disappointed but not surprised. The book received media attention so it’s got that going for it, but the extreme vigilante tactics that Kyle employed during the “Terry Incident” are inexcusable. It’s human to become angry, and it’s human to want to hurt those that have injured your loved ones, but Kyle became a monster when he “avenged” Terry. Kyle Rayner is beyond saving in my eyes.
And why is Murder Mysteries nominated? It’s been a while since I read it (the novella, not the comic adaptation), and I don’t remember any homosexual ideas in that story. Angels are asexual, not gay. Oh well.

It's alright Capn', just wanted to get it back to topic efore it was "to late". :D
Out of "Nominees for outstanding comic book" I believe Green Lantern will get it. As CaptainInfinity stated that it infact got Media attenion and chaned alot of things in the Green Lantern title. It was a bad storyline but it was a lookout on something that happens in real life and that is what I believe the people at GLAAD would to win.
I havn't read any of the other nominees but I have heard the most conversation about GL so that is why I believe it will win.

Howdy,
I think Murder Mysteries got nominated because it presented the concept of two angels engaging in an affair with each other. Despite the fact that the angels were genderless, they were all drawn as male. I think there was at least one lesbian background character, too, or one that was broadly hinted at being lesbian. I agree that its inclusion was a puzzler, or just a sign that there are so very, very few positive images of homosexuality in the comics mainstream. It's a mighty good read, though, and gorgeously drawn by the incomparable P. Craig Russell.
I could argue that Apollo/Midnighter just reinforce the anti-gay argument that homosexuality inevitably leads to deviant, sociopathic lifestyles, but I guess all the members of The Authority are deviant and sociopathic, so maybe it's not really worthwhile :).
I think GL will get an undeserved win, but I gotta plug Strangers in Paradise, which is (or at least was) one of the most beautifully written comics about real people out there. It's a comic of frienship, love, loss, and regret that's alternately touching, heartbreaking, and hilariously funny. Once we move to our new digs, I plan on getting a whole mess of Cerebus, Bone, and SiP TPBs to play catch-up.
