I have a question. Okay, when a director wanted to do a "cheater toon", and of coarse was going to have to use clips from several other cartoons, was that particular director REQUIRED to use only clips from HIS cartoons,
Or, if they wanted to use clips from another director's cartoons did they need permission?
Take Friz's "His Hair-Raising Tale" cartoon (I think that's the title). The cartoon features clips from mostly Friz cartoons, but on the other hand it also has clips from Chuck's cartoons.
Would Friz have needed permission from Chuck to use those clips?
Now another question. His Hare-Raising Tale also features a clip from Falling Hare, which is not a chuck cartoon, but A BOB CLAMPETT CARTOOOO-OOOOON!!! (sorry, couldn't resist)
And since Bob had already left WB at the time, would Friz still have needed permission from Bob to use that cartoon? Or possibly permission from Eddie Selzer (or whoever was in charge of WB at the time)?
Similar thing with Tortise Wins By A Hare, another BOB CLAMPETT CARTOOOO-OOOOON!!! features a clip from Tex Avery's Tortise Beats Hare. And Bob couldn't have asked Tex for permission, since Tex had already left.

Need Imput!

Oh, look, Hound of the Baskervilles! Treads don't fail me now!

My guess would be that since Warners owned the rights to the characters and the films themselves, a director didn't need to have permission to crank out a 'cheater' cartoon and choose footage from other director's cartoons. If it was there for the taking, they used it. Besides, 'cheater' cartoons were encouraged later on since less time and money was used in processing new footage...

The Three Stooges got away with it for years in the 1950s. It was when the films began airing on TV that it became confusing...

FWIW, I've noticed re-used footage in the 1940s Curly-era Stooge shorts, also. I assume it had something to do with wartime film stock shortages, like the re-used animation in a Chuck Jones cartoon with the mouse saying "Suckerrrr" to the lion and the lion banging his head against a tree (In that case, I'd read about that somewhere).

I don't think there would have been a problem. When MGM did the Tom & Jerry cheaters in the 1960's, they used HB footage, even though they were no longer at the studio.

In "Jerry's Diary" contain scenes of "Tee for Two", "Yankee Doodle Mouse" and "Solid Serenade" and that's more the correct and original scenes of these shorts. How are other MGM shorts with footage scenes?

Could the final episode of "Baby Looney Tunes" (Show #40: "Move It!"/ {I forget the title of the first segment of this ep, which premiered Tuesday}) be considered kind of a 'cheater toon', since the entire half-hour featured clips from other eps of the show and a wraparound type storyline to fit the clips in? :bosko: :bubbles: :knd1:

Sounds like it to me. Wow, only 40 episodes and they're already doing cheaters.....pathetic.

No kidding. Apparently they ran out of "Muppet Baby" and "Rugrats" plots to steal.
