Ref - WALT DISNEY TREASURES: DAVY CROCKETT

Kenneth Tobey, who portrayed Jim Bowie in "Davy Crockett at the Alamo" and Jocko in "Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" died on Dec. 22.

These Disney Treasures aren't animated-related (so I apologize if my OT moment bothers anyone), but ... I was born during the tail-end of the Davy Crockett craze, and had a big brother with a Crockett cap. Matinee re-releases made the 2 Crockett features happy childhood memories for me during the '60s. Mr. Tobey had a full career (check out imdb!; I just watched him in GREMLINS on Christmas Day), and his Crockett roles are a memorable piece of my childhood experience.

An anecdote that means little to anyone but me, but here goes anyway...

An '85 business trip was my first visit to LA (I'm on the east coast). A colleague's brother had recently opened a Jewish/Hungarian restaurant on Fairfax Ave., around the corner from CBS Television City, across the street from Canter's Deli. That was our first stop after the 6 hour flight (and 1 hour drive up the evening rush I-405). This being my first "Hollywood" trip, I really got a kick when I saw Mr. Tobey and his guests sit down at the table next to me. I didn't bother him, but just knowing who he was, and remembering his role in my childhood memories... well, I still get a kick out of it.

RIP Mr. Tobey.
