When compiling some information for a DVDToons review on "Somewhere In Dreamland" I learned that the Fleischer studios actually released sound cartoons 2 years before Disney! Anyway, according to Jerry Beck, "Inkwell" films is releasing a DVD featuring six of these rare cartoons in January. The VHS version is already available. Check out the link for more info.

Actually Max Fleischer started releasing synchronized sound cartoons complete with actual dialog back in 1924 with the Lee DeForest sound system.Deforest was the inventor of the sound on film process, which for that time was a revolutionary process. The only problem was the not enough movie theaters across the country was not equipped with speakers for sound films, thus making the series a flop.

If it was based on timing, Disney had it with "Steamboat Willie" in 1928, but it was Fleischer that made the first all talking sound cartoon four year earlier.
