I watched the unedited ROTJ tonite and I just can't believe how twisted Joker is. The scene that really got me thinking about this is when Terry returns to the cave to find HA HA HA painted everywhere. Why does this make Joker demented? Becuase it's exactly the same situation where Terry found his dad in the pilot, with HA HA HA painted everywhere! Joker did his homework! If only BB had more villians like this...

Cool. Wonder if they planned it to be like that...

Dini planned to make the correlation between Terry's father death and Bruce's near death. If you watch the Director's Commentary on the Edited DVD version he mentions it shows how truly sick Joker is.

I thought it was a given those two events correlated.

Totally missed that one. Damn, that was quite clever. I feel I failed Dini by missing such a subtle bit of nastiness... Excellent...

In some ways, perhaps that was the whole point of ROTJ and what Barbara was trying to point out to Terry. There are NO villians in Gotham Future that match the Joker. He is - ahem - was, one of a kind.... :)

Great observation, DG. I only noted the obvious, that McGinnis feared for Wayne's life. But you're right, Joker created a situation that was strikingly similar to the death of Terry's dad. Wow, Terry must have felt far worse than I had ever imagined when he arrived at the cave.

It's moments like this that made ROTJ so powerful for me. It's a lean 1 hr and 15 min, but it made every moment count.

Wow, I never thought of it like that. Thanks DG for pointing that out. I'll be waiting for the Uncut version to be released...

I already knew about the Warren McGinnis/Bruce connection, although I didn't think much of it because I was ticked off about the fact that the color of the letters in HA HA HA were changed. Oh those stupid edits.....

??? Why would the censors diddle with something meaningless like the color of some letters spraypainted on a wall? Are they that all-fired anal?

I can just see the post-screening meeting where it got handed down:

President of Kid's WB: . . . and less blood.

Bruce Timm: Is that all?

President: No. And now with the really STUPID demand, here's Kenny, our vice-president in charge of network idiocy.

Kenny: Change the color of the HA! HA! letters.

President: Thanks, Kenny. That was truly D-U-M dumb. Here's a merit raise.

cuz you know if those letters are in red, kiddies will think that red is blood and will likely go out and kill people just to use their blood to paint HAHAHAHA on walls. Happens every year. In Stupidville.

I just thought it was really cool how they did that. I didn't find out until I listened to the commentary is was intentional. I've been meaning topost this post forever and I just finally got around to it.

There will never be another villian like Joker. EVER.

Yep, I noticed that. I don't have the DVD so I haven't heard the commentary. But ............ my interpretation is that the writers wrote it as a kick to the head for poor Terry but Joker himself did it as a kick in the head to Bruce. Remember he had arranged for Terry to be murdered at the club. So, Terry would never have seen what Joker did to the Batcave.
