Evangelisim is preaching the gospel to people who don't belive it.
Not animie.
NOT ANIMIE.

(It may have a connection in the name though.)

Basically NGE is a freaked out rendition of Revelations in The Bible.
What Spaz said. To evangelize is to preach the Gospel.

Evangelisim Is To Grab A Bunch Of Anime Stock Characters And Try To Depress People With A Cheap, Horrid Attempt To Make A Masterful Storyline And Make Studio Gainax Sue You For Blatant Ripping Off. :p

Actually there's very little from Eva that comes from Revelations. Actually, I don't remember a single thing. Could you enlighten us about how it takes stuff from Revelations? Very little, if anything, was taken from the New Testement. And as anyone who has watched the show would know, there's nothing religious about the show itself.

I'm guessing they probably got the name from the same root word as the root of the words "evangelist," "evangelize," etc. Sort of like how they call the big scary monsters "angels." There's nothing more behind it than that-- either a little or a lot, depending on how deeply you want to (over?)analyze it.

Actually I think the word Evangelion is derived from evangelize.

The word "evangeli-" means something to do/or related to Catholic or Christianity.
The show "Evangelion" has themes related to Catholic or Christianity.

Are we talking about the same show? The same show centered around...
Angels attacking the Earth trying to wipe out the human race? The same show where man-made gods defend against an all consuming heavenly threat? The same show where Shinji ultimatley becomes God and remakes the cosmos?
And that isn't some what related to religion? If not, why did they name the show Shin Seiki Evangelion? The way I describe the shows name is...
Neon (new, next) Genesis (beginning, generation) Evangelion (evangelism, or telling the masses that there is a God)
But isn't that what the show is all about?
After the Second Impact and the comming of The Angels, brings up the topic of "Is there a God" which sums up the whole idea of Evangelism, to show the masses that there is infact a God? Or am I just over analizing?
Woo, that was a mouth full.

You're just overanalyzing. The christian references were put there for ONE reason and ONE reason only. Because they "look cool".

So we should just treat NGE as some Gundam rip-off? Maybe I'm over-analizing a little bit just because it's my favorite anime but anime is not just pure entertainment all the time; it can also make you think about life and the ties between people.
But now you're just gonna say I'm babbling. :p

Whoa there folks, let's calm it down a bit.
This is a debate I've seen time and time again, not only with respect to Eva (although I've seen it plenty of times with respect to Eva, believe you me) but with respect to almost any widely respected work of art or literature you can think of. Sit in on just about any high school English class and you're bound to hear the same debate all over again:
Teacher: Shakespeare meant (insert complicated symbolic meaning here) when he said X.
Student: You're full of it, Shakespeare meant exactly what he said when he said X. You're overanalyzing.
(Of course, these type of exchanges tend to end really quickly, because the teacher has all the guns. English teachers always claim "I don't have all the answers, you have to figure it out for yourself, not just repeat what you think I want to hear," but precious few actually mean it when grading time comes. But that's a whole different rant. Heh heh.)
Now, if you want to have this debate all over again, go right ahead-- there are some good arguments to be made on both sides. But for crying out loud, respect one another. Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean that they are "babbling" or don't know what they're talking about.

Thats true. The religious references are just a curtain for the main story. The religious references look cool, thats it. The story is about Shinji.
