I remember seeing this when I was a kid a long time ago. I was just wondering today, what shows were on it?

I don't think anything like that was on a network, so it might have been a local production. Where did you live at the time it was on? Do you remember what year it was?

Fans of the medium seldom use the term "Japanimation" anymore due to possible racist connotations, preferring "Japanese animation" or "anime".

Could you please go into more detail. What do you see on this show? A boy and his dog? Giant robots beating up each other?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away Cartoon Network had a 30 minute block *I think* called "Japanimation". It was possibly there first shot at anime, and I guess it was about 8 years ago. One thing *I think* I remember is this guy had made a cybernetic girl or something, the rest is just a blur.

Back in 1996, an independant channel in Chicago, WJYS, used to run something called Japanimation. They would have many classic anime movies like Vampire Hunter D, Dirty Pair, Zillion, Grave of the Firelflies, Demon City Shinjuku, Robot Carnival, Project Ako, and many others. At first they ran uncut at 8pm. But people got wind of it, so they had to edit them and air them at 11pm, then 1am, and soon they were gone completely. Just as well, since the channel has become home to non stop infomercials and church shows.

Yah, but I don't live in Illinois, I live in Georgia. Well I know it did exist, I'll just try and look for an answer somewhere else.

I have heard before that CN did show Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, and something with Cockroaches in it at one time before they got the kid's network label. That's probably what you're talking about.

You're thinking of the SciFi channel. CN has never aired the films you mentioned.

Sorry, Exatron, but I remember seeing it commercialized as well. I'm positive it was on CN. It was only done once and the shows aired at around midnight, so that may be the reason you don't remember. Don't worry, I find it hard to believe CN ever aired these shows(especialy with Vampire Hunter D's graphic violence) and I saw the commercials my self  .

I've seen D and Robot Carnival on Sci-fi, but I don't have a clue as to what the cockroach thing I saw in the commercial was. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Yes, CN used to show "the best in Japanimation" which included a weekend long marathon where obscure titles like Robot Carnival and Twilight of the Cockroaches aired. Of course, those were relatively all-ages films with little to edit, and they were shown back in the day when CN wasn't nearly as widespread and popular as it is now. The Sci-Fi Channel's ill-fated "Saturday Anime" block was something completely different.

Don't know about that accusation, but from my rusty old memory, I first saw "Vampire Hunter D" believe it or not on CN! Sure it was probably cut in a couple places, but there it was, after midnight, on the station. I think I also saw "Robot Carnival" for the first time there as well, but it could have been that syndicated movie block.

BTW: Yes, there was an old CN ad with Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole where they do mention "the latest in Japanimation", and that was even before I truely discovered anime with Sailor Moon! (you see, I was always interested in animation, and just thought at the time that anime was just a part of it)

Wow. I dont remember that at all. Was this around the era of the REALLY early years of Cartoon Network?

I assume this happened in maybe its first or second year when they had "The Power Hour" instead of Toonami and showed stuff like the old Plastic Man Cartoon and Centurions?

Interesting. Perhaps that was a test or something. **shrugs**

No, it was definitely SciFi. The network used to have a latenight anime broadcast and week of anime in prime time in the summer where the network would air films like Robot Carnival and Akira.

I remember watching Robot Carnival, Vampire Hunter D and falling asleep into Twilight of the Cockroaches.

My cable company started carrying CN in '93 (and they didn't even carry Sci-Fi until this summer so I couldn't have seen it on that channel) and the Saturday night special ran about a year after I first got CN (IIRC), so it had to have been sometime in '94.

Anyone else remember promos stating that CN was considering making it a regular feature?

http://www.awn.com/mag/issue5.06/5.06pages/pattenfeatures.php3 Second paragraph.

This is the only reference I could find about CN airing Vampire Hunter D but I remember talk about it long ago on other, now extinct forums.

Edit addition:

One thing *I think* I remember is this guy had made a cybernetic girl or something, the rest is just a blur.
That sounds more like Robot Carnival.

Yes, I knew I wasn't crazy! :D Also, CN was so cool in it's infancy.

Then in the mid-'90s came a few adolescent and adult animated sci-fi and fantasy dramatic features like Akira and Vampire Hunter D on cable TV's Cartoon Network and Sci-Fi Channel, and young teen TV series like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, while anime videos began to appear in general video shops.
Holy crap, CN aired Akira!?!?! Or did it air on Sci-Fi, either way that's weird.

I may not be the only person who remembers "Vampire Hunter D" on CN, but I know it aired there. I remember getting CN back about December, 1994. It was either that year or 1995 when those three films aired on the network. (BTW: I did try "Twilight of the Cockroaches", but went to bed early on) In fact, I remember the CN ad with the "latest in Japanimation" airing on TNT and other stations before I got CN! (It had a scene from "Starlight Angel", the first short in "Robot Carnival" after the intro) I even remember some sort of thing made by the network where they said this was "the first "adult" anime movie ever made". It could have been Sci-Fi, but I know for sure that it was CN!

BTW: "Akira" never aired on CN, though. I did tape it off Sci-Fi, though, early in 1996 when I was watching SM for the first time.

Akira did air on Sci-Fi however I'm uncertain if it aired on Cartoon Network at that time.

Honestly, does it really matter if Akira or Vampire Hunter D ever aired on either Sci-Fi or Cartoon Network? I don't think that making contradictory statements from memory is going to convince anyone. Links to articles are all well and good, but remember that articles can have research mistakes, too. Can't we all just agree to disagree? (-:

I first saw Akira on Saturday anime on Sci-Fi. I remember thinking how strange it was to see a cut from a dark and violent future to commercials for a kids game with a toy chicken.

Yeah, I think agreeing to disagree is a good thing.

I can safely say that I watched late night anime movies on Scifi network a long time ago, probably before high school, which was before 1996. They also showed all the other anime mentioned, including Vampire Hunter D and 8 Man After (I believe that was the name, although it was a while ago. Really great flic). I specifically remember that on the Scifi netwrok. I never had Cartoon Network until 1998, so Scifi was my one stop source for anime in the mid 90s.

However, I cannot say for sure that CN never aired that stuff because I do not know. I did not have the channel. I do know that what I watched was Scifi channel. In fact, one day they showed Akira at 8pm, then midnight, then again in the really early morning. It was a crazy block of post-apocalyptic anime goodness.

Anyway, that's my story. I know that I didn't have CN at the time when this was shown on tv, and I know it was on Scifi, however I cannot say that CN never showed them as well. So this isn't really an answer, just my own two cents.

I agree to disagree as well, but I am telling the truth! CN did air three anime movies at midnight on Saturday night, no more, no less. And they were all "Robot Carnival", "Vampire Hunter D" and "Twilight of the Cockroaches". I also remember it because I think that either they started at midnight or just after midnight where they aired SGC2C. I remember seeing all of them there, not on Sci-Fi channel! The first time I remember watching anime of any kind on Sci-Fi was "Akira", which I taped off them at 3 or 4 in the afternoon in early 1996. Then, there was when they had that anime movie week in 1996, where I saw "Tenchi Muyo in Love" and "Gall Force: Eternal Story". I never saw "Vampire Hunter D" on Sci-Fi, it was on Cartoon Network! I just know it!

And how are you so certain of this? Especially when several people seem to recall seeing them on BOTH stations.

Unless you're a CN employee, I don't see how you can know for certain that they didn't show the three movies in question.

I was in around 3rd or 4th grade when Cartoon Network some anime movies after midnight. I wanted to stay up and watch it but I fell asleep. I don't remember the names of the anime movies, but I do know that they have aired anime at the time.

For starters, my cable provider added Cartoon Network shortly after it was available. Second, the SciFi channel was airing those movies at midnight during the years in question.

The people who think they saw them on the SciFi channel are mistaken. Cartoon Network has never had the rights to those films.

I remember the Cartoon Network promo that had clips from Robot Carnival was on some VHS tapes I rented one time. If anybody had a VHS tape with the promo on that would prove that Cartoon Network did indeed air anime movies at one time.

I think I have that promo. I taped it back in 1995 when I set my timer to tape a "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" marathon. And yes, it was from "Robot Carnival". (as I said earlier, from the segment "Starlight Angel")
