I think it was originally listed in Wizard magazine, and is summarized in the News section of this website. Though as far as I'm concerned, Bugs and the Looney Tunes gang should be in the #1 slot, not the "Simpsons"... then again, their putting the likes of "GI Joe" in their top 10 makes their list of rather dubious merit for me....

Hm... I think there's a bit of nostalgia that's coloring this list. Agreed with Brainatra on G.I. Joe making the top ten list, as well as Transformers... I loved both shows as a kid, but looking at them now I realize that, as far as sheer quality is concerned, they were just mediocre. Same thing with the 10 worst shows... I think they just wanted to bash celebrity vanity projects rather than dredge up truly awful cartoons, like The Little Clowns of Happytown or Daffy Duck Meets the Groovie Ghoolies.

Finally get to see the whole list...

"Bullwinkle" ranks 10 notches below *Laff-a-lympics*?! And well below "GI Joe"?! Um....*yeah*. (Backs away from the "Wizard" mag slowly...).

My guess is (along with nostalgia) that WIZARD are the type of people who go for whatever looks "kewl", moreso than substance, as their articles seem to reflect (disdain for anything without some juvenile sterotypical-fanboyish attitude/appeal as "crap", their various off-color jokes, etc.). Hence, a lack of appreciation for something groundbreaking like "Bullwinkle" (or even stuff like Woody Woodpecker, etc.), in favor of stuff like "Family Guy" ranking higher on their lists (clocking in at #32 BTW)...

Also agreed that their sense of animation knowledge is apparently lacking....they listed "Mighty Mouse Playhouse" instead of just "Mighty Mouse" ("Playhouse" being some 50's TV show that played the old MM cartoons, rather than where he originated), and "The Bugs Bunny Show" instead of "Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies". That, and a lack of any Disney films being on the list (beyond "Aladdin")...

I still say that Bugs & co. would be at the top of the list, which might be another reflection of WIZARD's lack of historical recall..."Rocky and His Friends"/"The Bullwinkle Show" would probably be in my top 5/10, and certainly not stuff like "Transformers" or "Batman Beyond" (as entertaining as BB might be, I don't think it's top 5/10 material).

Re: the bottom 10 shows: they forgot "The Brady Kids". I actually watched "Life With Louie"/"Alvin and the Chipmunks" (I presume they're referring to the 80's version of this show here; I wondered why though that Alvin wanted to have some sort of zany scheme to make more money/fame. They seemed pretty famous enough already [despite being nothing more than a glorified cover band without an original song to their credit besides "The Witchdoctor"/"Christmastime Is Almost Here"], and they certainly didn't seem lacking for money [that big house, all the stuff they had, etc.]. Indeed, Alvin kind of came off as being little more than a greedy, materialistic, self-centered little jerk at times...though I guess since it *was* the 80's, maybe Alvin took the "greed is good" mantra to heart ;-)

Maybe I should make my own top 10/whatever list, though for me, breaking it down by decade (30's-present) would probably be easier...

I was dissapointed in the list. FAMILY GUY at #32? Since when should that even be in the top #100? While I agree with B:TAS at #2, I thought LOONEY TUNES should be at one. S:TAS at #21? Whatever...

Yeah, it's obvious they didn't try to use any kind of accurate methods. Probably, it was just a few guys listing their favorite cartoons. I think if they were to sit down and watch these, or to rank them in terms of their influence on future works, they would have to change these a lot.

What is Battle Of The Planets? I've never even heard of it, and it's at 9.

Simpsons doesn't belong at #1, especially considering the last few seasons. They're just listing it there because they know it's really popular right now. Flintstones deserves to be higher than 56, esp. since it was the first primetime cartoon and cleared the way for Bullwinkle in prime time (as opposed to Rocky and His Friends on Sat. morning!), as well as Simpsons and Futurama. And The Alvin Show belongs somewhere on that list. And what about Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound, for chrissakes?

There's so many things wrong with this list, I have to stop there or I'll be here all day.

Super Mario had his show in the 80's, first hosted by Lou Albano (who played a live action Mario), then it was hosted by a couple of teenage video game dorks, then it wasn't hosted by anyone when Mario 3 came out, it wasn't syndicated anymore and new shows were made for Sat. morning. This continued when Mario World was released, with the addition of Yoshi and other new elements. The syndicated ones also showed Legend of Zelda episodes on Fri. I found the Cap'n Lou version on TV a little while ago. It was bad, but at least it was bad enough to be funny.

Super Mario Bros. Super Show refers to the Cap'n Lou Albano version. I know that that's what that version was called.

Few guys listing their favorites sounds about right, and given the tastes of WIZARD's staff, this list probably shouldn't be surprising....

I think it's some old anime cartoon from the 70's/80's(?)...

I don't think "Rocky and His Friends" was a Sat. morning series (Sat. mornings not nearly as big in 1959 as it would be in later years), but just aired in a time that doesn't fall within actual prime-time hours (early evening/late afternoons?)...though I could be wrong...

Brainatra--you were right on Rocky and His Friends. I looked it up, he started on Tues. and Thurs. afternoons, then in 1960 was moved to Sun. afternoons. I guess I trusted my memory a little too much.:o

The Bullwinkle Show did go to Sat. morning when it left primetime, before it finally moved to Sun. morning, so maybe that's what I was thinking about.

Simpsons deserve number one in my opinion....broke a lotta ground. It had char emotion and helped to get cartoons some badly needed respect....plus, some of its humor is top-notch, even if it isn't too good right now....but I think it will rise up again.
Critic got halfway through? YEAH! Dexter did well...
....and Histeria did pretty good for a show of its uh, obscurity! YEAH! PARTY! PARTY! :D
TMNT....got a good rank! All right!

It's a good thing SJJ doesn't post on this forum, or he'd slap you silly for that. ;)

Also, I actually liked Alvin and the Chipmunks. Really.

It was an anime show, originally named GATCHAMAN, dubbed for English audiences in the 70s - I only have vague memories of seeing it as a child, and all I can tell you about it is... that I liked Star Blazers and Robotech better.

You can browse for info on it here:

http://dmoz.org/Arts/Animation/Anime/Titles/G/Gatchaman/

Wizard's known for having a scewered opinion when it comes to lists like these. I know I have a difference of opinion on a number of them, and I certainly wouldn't rank the Simpsons #1 either.

And MiB is by far better than X-Men: Evolution - for XE to even make the top 50 is rediculous to me, and for the Herculoids to rank higher than MiB as well? Fie upon Wizard. And Johnny Quest making it into their top 10? They musta been stoned or something. And I highly disagree with "Life With Louie" being placed on the 10 worst. It shows a complete lack of taste of any shows which offer a bit of sentiment and family-friendly fare. It was a great, down-to-earth, reality-based show that reminded me very much of my own childhood, and the voice Louie Anderson used for his Dad on the show is among my top 10 favorite character voices.

My personal top 10 (yes, notsalgia-influenced) favorites would be:

Looney Tunes
Batman: TAS
Rocky & Bullwinkle
The Simpsons
The Pink Panther
Pinky & The Brain
Dexter's Laboratory
Gargoyles
Transformers

--on Life With Louie. In fact, I just saw an ad on Fox kids that hints they may be bringing it out of mothballs for the weekday lineup. I also got a hoot out of Louie's old man's voice. "Don't get me wrong; I don't hate your grandmother. She's a perfectly nice old woman...if you overlook the wrinkled, yellowy skin, watery eyes and breath that could kill a dinosaur! Hmmmmm...maybe that explains why they became extinct. Heh, heh, heh."
And Inspector Gadget ranked over Daria? Now I liked Gadget as a kid, but as I got older the show made me squirm with embarrassment (esp. after it jumped the shark and brought in that dumb fat kid as a sidekick). Don Adams did a lot better with Get Smart, IMO.

Man that list stunk. BATMAN before Looney Tunes?!?! It's inhuman! And why the heck were great shows like Woody Woodpecker and The Flinstones in the 50s-80s?!?! However, THE SIMPSONS wasn't a bad choice for number one. That or either Looney Tunes would satisfy me. However, here are my top 10 favorite cartoon series of all time (in no order):

Looney Tunes
Tom & Jerry
Woody Woodpecker
Rocky & Bullwinkle
The Simpsons
Animaniacs
The Pink Panther
Ren and Stimpy
Rocko's Modern Life
SpongeBob Squarepants
