From Box Office Mojo forums (number is in millions):
#1 - DIE ANOTHER DAY 6.666
#2 - HARRY POTTER 6.568
#3 - ADAM SANDLER'S EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS 2.732
#4 - TREASURE PLANET 2.322
#5 - SANTA CLAUSE 1.948
#6 - SOLARIS 1.233
#7 - 8MILE 1.193
#8 - FRIDAY AFTER 1.173
#9 - THEY 1.121
#10 - THE RING 1.063
Apparently the power of Adam Sandler is proving greater than Disney.
This is a thread for talking about the current box office state of the movie. NOT FOR REVIEWING. Keep the snide comments to yourself, or post them in the actual Talkback for the movie. All others, please reply.
Do not judge Wednesdays numbers as representative of the weekend however, for two factors:
Most of the country was still at work/in school on Wednesday, leaving only teenagers and college kids, as evidenced by Die Another Day's high number.
Comparing past Thanksgivings (including Toy Story 2), most families go out to see a movie either on Thanksgiving or on Saturday, so expect huge spikes from here on in.
We're not looking at a PPG-like failure here. More like.. a repeat of Atlantis, I'm guessing. The reason being that it's pitted against Adam Sandler. You can't counterprogram against Adam Sandler. Any ad that you could conceive of to make TP look better than Eight Crazy Nights would ultimately fail, because the average student thinks "ADAM SANDLER!!! YO, HE'S THE FUNNIEST, DAWG! OH MY GOD, I SAID DAWG AND I'M WHITE! AHAHAH! DAWG!" Or maybe they don't. Shrug.
My predictions for the rest of the weekend:
Eight Crazy Nights: $28 million
Treasure Planet: $25 million
I'd like to be wrong though. Oh, how I'd like to be wrong. If TP did great, it would mean great things for Disney. Otherwise, Disney can't stand to have another 2D failure. That's definitely not what the animation industry needs right now.
It's kinda hard for an underhyped film to compete with a Bond flick with Halle Berry in it. I saw Treasure Planet, but the theatre I was in was only half full. In comparison, "Die another Day" was packed.

I am not suprise.
This is probably the same reason Jackass became number one at the box office.

Lessee...
Besides the "allure" of Adam Sandler's new 2-D animated flick (which if it succeeds should prove there's some legs to 2D animation as a whole yet, if that's any consolation), and adults packing it in to see "Die Another Day"/Sandler's film, you also can't forget about the other big name film still packing the kids in: Harry Potter. This might also serve as a drain on potential viewers of "Treasure Planet." Another factor: the reviews I've seen so far for TP have given rather lukewarm comments on the film, esp. compared to "Potter"...

I'm only guessing this but maybe it's because more people want to laugh. Comedy's usually always out preform most movies unless it's a franchise, epic or just really cool looking action movie. Besides I don't even know why Disney thought treasure Planet would do good. Almost every film that seems geared torward older audiences that they've produced have done horrible in the theatersa nd tehn blow up on DVD and VHS.
The Emporer's New Groove and Atlantis come to mind.
So far things are going as I expected though. Go get'em Adam ! I'm probaly go see 8 Crazy Nights tomorow.

That's strange, I heard the exact opposite.

Well, with those numbers, and I guess tickets averaging, when matinee and night shows are combined, about $6.50, TP would have pulled in about $15,000,000 on Wensday. That's not too bad overall. Looks like a huge weekend at the box office for everyone. :)

TP did NOT get $15 million on Wednesday.
If you read my post, it says they got $2 million.
Also, on Thursday, they got another $2 million. $4 million in total, so far. It's a flopperoo.

[indent]For Thanksgiving weekend Friday numbers are usually up at least 60%+ from the Wed./Thur. numbers. It's still on pace to make around $15 mil. Not great, but not bad either.
Emperor's New Groove
Opening Weekend: $9,812,302
Final Total: $89,264,219

Oh, I thought you said that those numbers were the number of people who had seen the movie. Sorry, didn't quite realize you ment that they were the monetary sums pulled in. My mistake.

Well the estimates (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/) are in, Treasure Planet barely beat Eight Crazy Nights.
Treasure Planet is in fourth place with a weekend gross of $11,869,000.
Eight Crazy Nights is in fifth place with a weekend gross of $10,100,000.
There is about a million dollar difference between the two movies.
But at the end, the winner may be Eight Crazy Nights.
It cost a lot more to produce Treasure Planet than Eight Crazy Nights, so Treasure Planet's profitability will be longer and slower.

So Treasure Planet didn't make that much in its first weekend.
These films didn't make a lot of money and they (more or less) were recognized as classics:
Cats Don't Dance
(The) Iron Giant
Titan A.E.
Just give it time.

You mean cult classics. None of the movies you mentioned are recogized by the public.
The next few weeks won't be better. Popular movies like Star Trek: Nemesis and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers won't give Treasure Planet much room to move up in the Box Office.
