No way!! Really?? That would be awesome. Not quite sure why it has to be on Adult Swim though. The TV show is pretty tame. The comic on the other hand...

Killtacular

It's tame but that doesn't necessarily mean it's for kids, much like Casablanca isn't for toddlers just because it's G rated.

Wow. I didn't see that coming. I knew that Pioneer was interested in getting it on TV, but I didn't think so soon.

This is the Pioneer-acquired 2nd series, and not the Funimation movies correct? How did you come upon this info?

The only problem is I find it very hard to believe that any dub could do Lupin justice. The original Japanese voice acting is just so good and distinctive. I don't think I could take Lupin with a different voice.

i knew Lupin III will be on AS. my friend asked a pioneer rep at one of the cons and he said "we're aiming for an Adult Swim kind of block", that pretty much gave it away since i dont know any other channels that has a block like Adult Swim

^_^ This is awesome news. Lupin is a great series, I hope it stays on for a long time. The only dub of Lupin I've seen was Castle of Cagliostro a few years back. Does anyone know if the Funimation dub also added in cursing like Manga did? I really hate how Manga does that...

This is great news, though Lupin fills the last of the three action slots in the upcoming ASweekdays lineup (other two being Bebop and Inu-Yasha), if they aren't rotating different shows on different nights in that lineup. Looks like Yu Yu may really be off the network. :(

You know, I bet Funimation is really happy about this, since it means that all their numerous Lupin specials and movies are now guaranteed to air on the network eventually.

Of course, it could actually be the reason WHY we haven't heard anything about their Lupin stuff airing...they knew about the Pioneer deal and were waiting until the TV series starts up to put their stuff on.

Even though the series is old and has dated animation, I hope people look past that to see how great the show is. I've seen a couple of episodes of Lupin and it is quite good. Castle of Cagliostro is one of my favorite anime movies. Some of the TV specials are also good. If the series is successful, then maybe Pioneer will buy the rights to the first TV series. They only have the rights to the second TV series.

Zero Angel
11-26-2002, 07:11 PM
well i can see how some of them will say that Lupin is a rip off of Spike, and Jigen is a rip off of Jet, and of coarse the every lovely Fujiko is a rip off of Faye but i think the differences between the shows will become quite apparent to the avid watcher.

one cant simply watch Lupin though and not get where a crap load of references suddenly come from that are used in anime.

Well, though I can technically see them virtually porting the Bebop cast right over to Lupin, I can also see them switching stuff around. I don't know about their roster of actors, but LFV said that the guy who does Gene Starwind would make a good Lupin. I've never seen a sub so I wouldn't know.

Same with the cameos in GXP, it'd be alot cheaper for FUNi to just recast the Tenchi cast.

actually, Castle of Cagliostro isnt a Funimation title, its by Manga and was dubbed by Animaze (i believe, i could be wrong). i could have sworn i read somewhere at Animeondvd.com that the same cast is doing the roles...

Don't worry, you're not. Castle of Cagliostro was an Animaze dub. Sean Barker (aka David Hayter) was Lupin.

Great news! I thought it was going to take another year for Lupin III to make its way onto CN.

The subbed version of Castle of Cagliostro was among the first anime films I ever saw. I agree the voice acting was great, as least to my n00b ears at the time, but still I'm expecting quality voice-work from Animaze. Mostly I'm psyched to finally see Hayao Miyazaki's work for TV.

I personally that Pioneer gave Lupin to AS as a test. They saw that MSG failed on Toonami, because it was old, and now they want to see if WS can take an old title that will have minimal editting done by Pioneer(and not Williams Street as they don't edit other companies shows anymore), and if it does well, they will give them an uber-reward that I'm sure they've been wanting for a while(can you say Trigun?). I'm not saying this to diss Lupin fans or anything(I've only seen Castle ofCaglistro and Mystery of Mamo anyways), but I'm betting that WS wanted something else, but Pioneer is making them work for it.

Is that an order? Anyway, the original Lupin the Third manga (comic) series by Monkey Punch which began in the late 1960s was rather risque and violent. Although the animated Lupin does have a good deal of violence, in the comic Lupin himself sometimes plays the cold-hearted killer, although of course he only kills evil types. The comic also has plenty of soft-porn-ish moments which, although brief and humorous, would never make it onto a TV screen. If you watch the first Lupin movie, Mystery of Mamo, you will get a pretty good feel for what the comic was like. In Lupin's other animated appearances he is a bit more restrained.

Lupin is even older and creakier looking than Gundam, so if looks are everything it's in for a rough ride. The music is particularly creaky and could use an update. No, not the main Lupin theme (that's timeless), but the rest of the score. If the characters and stories are given a chance however it's one of the best anime series around.

Ok to answer the question. Lupin is about...Lupin. Lupin III actually. He is a master thief and a lady's man. You also have Lupin's right hand man, Jigen, former Yakuza and master markesmen. Then there is Goemon (not Doemon), a samurai for hire, though he always complains about cuting worthless objects. Along for the ride ussually is the lovely Fujiko (Top 10 hotest anime babes), a spy that is at times working with Lupin, working against him, or just in bed with him. And then we have (my fave character) Zenigata, a japanese interpol agent who is forever trying to capture Lupin, sometimes they put their differences aside though and take out the truely evil men.

i love this show and all of the subsequent movies that have come out for it. i really cant watch this show in anything but sub however and i was really depressed when i found out that Lupin's original seiyuu died a few years ago. he was the voice of Lupin and will forever be the one true voice of the master thief.

Zenigata rules! He's easily my favorite Lupin character. His best scene comes in I think The Hemingway Papers movie. He is on a train crossing the tunnel between France and England, following Lupin of course. He goes in between the train cars so he can discreetly cook his bowl of instant ramen, when suddenly the bad guys set off a bomb and the ocean floods the train. The next day he is arrested by the British police for illegal immigration becasue he washed up on the beach without his passport. Ha! Ha!

It's too bad that the original Lupin voice actor is no longer around, but the guy they got to replace him sounds very similar.

For beginners, Lupin III is basically a mix between Indy Jones, James Bond, and Austin Powers. He goes all over the world looking for obscure treasures to steal, battles evil madmen who are trying to take over the world, is constantly making jokes and tries to put the moves on any and very attractive female he comes across.

I really excited about this one. I've wanted to see it for a while, but due to anime section at the local Hollywood Video (featuring nothing but DBZ, "Tenchi Universe", and, for some strange reason, "Crying Freeman") and a severe lack of funds, I haven't had a chance to. I just have one question, and this my have already been answered, but are they going to eventually show all things "Lupin" on AS, on just the series in question?

That's the show that was in the game "Cliff Hanger", right? That was my favorite video game at one point. Lupin had an instant fan when I found out what it was.

Since this is the second series of Lupin, what happen to the first series? Shouldn't we be seeing that first? The second series began airing in 1978. There's a lot of concern that the animation will be considered dated.

The first series began airing in 1971, I believe. You figure it out. :)

Like Dragonball, they believe they'll have better luck with the second series; then they can go back and cash in with the first series if it does well.

While in theory Pioneer could hire each one individually for the part, it doesn't seem likely, when it would be cheaper to make their own cast. Not good for continuity, but it's alot cheaper. Same with the cameos in GXP, it'd be alot cheaper for FUNi to just recast the Tenchi cast.

Um, the Castle of Cagliostro was dubbed by Manga Entertainment, NOT Funimation. Funimation has dubbed most of the other Lupin movies. However, I think Animaze did the dub for Manga Ent, so Pioneer may just use the same voice actors as that dub. The Manga dub wasn't bad.

I'm pretty sure Pioneer IS using Animaze for the TV series.

The first Lupin III series dates from the early 1970's and therefore is much older than the second series. Since the 2nd series (made in the late 70's) has somewhat dated animation, the earlier one has even more dated animation!

I have only seen the 2nd series and not the first, but from what I've heard of it, it is quite different and not as good as the 2nd series. The first series is also much more serious in tone than the latter one is.

The 1st series is only about 20 episodes, while the 2nd series is 155 episodes long.

No, not the main Lupin theme (that's timeless), but the rest of the score. If the characters and stories are given a chance however it's one of the best anime series around.

Are you suggesting changing the background music? I hope not, because I've never heard the original music score and I hate it when dubs change the music. Besides, old animation with new music will be strange. But, actually, I read on a thread somewhere on this board that Pioneer couldn't get the rights to some of the original music. So, we might hear some new music regardless.

If any music does need to be changed, it'd probably be image songs, because everything else should be very easy to get the rights to.

according to Pioneer, there will be some music 'swapping' becuase some of the music were trademarked and has to stay in japan. and from what i heard, this music they're swapping doesnt even take up 5% of the original music

The main Lupin theme music should definitely stay (assuming it was even in the TV series). It's as identifiable as the Bond theme.

The rest of the music is so dated though that its absence would not be a big loss. Many 70s anime suffer from awful music. for example, Gatchaman is in every way superior to the Americanized Battle of the Planets, except for the embarrassingly hokey music.

I dont know if I've already replied, though I doubt it, But Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Caglistro, is one of my favorite films.

I've been really excited about this for quite a while...

Anyone know if the series is as good as that movie?

Lupin...I cant wait for this. ;)

I'd just like to say that this really surprised me. "Lupin the III". I've never seen this series, but I know it's a classic. And the fact that it's going to premiere on Adult Swim is amazing. This is a great opportunity for people to realize that this show is really adult. It has dated animation, but it has a mature story. That's what makes it adult, not ballet-like gunfights and blood flying from every imaginable place. Real adults will see this series for what it really is, which is what people should've done with "Mobile Suit Gundam". Oh, if only Adult Swim had come around then. If only...

But it kinda makes me wonder...why is "Lupin" premiering before "The Big O" and "Ghost in the Shell TV" when it was just announced now and those two shows were revealed several months ago?

Probably because Big O 2 and GitS's dubs aren't finished yet. I'm expecting Big O to be in production, but according to Bandai, for GitS, as of about a month ago the production hadn't even started yet.

Funi has dubbed only three movies at this point, three of what? 10? 15? there are lots more movies to be done before they see the light of day here although there have been 2 Lupin movies release prior to Funi getting the rights to them.

Now...to clear up some confussion, Lupin is not Studio Ghibli. if it was then it would be owned by the Empire of the Mouse and not Funi, considering that Miramax purchased the Ghibli library and then Disney purchased them. i am not sure what is being done about Castle of Cagliostro since that was a movie by Hayao Miyazaki but put out with MANGA before the merger.

all i can say though is this, if it is the dub cast from CC then i dont think i will want to watch it on AS and i will simply have to wait for it on DVD.

True, Ghibli doesn't OWN Lupin, but Miyazaki and many other men who worked on the Lupin TV series would go on to form Studio Ghibli. Lupin, I believe, was some of thier earliest work, but I could be wrong.

And rights are a tricky thing. After all, Buena Vista owns Cagliostro's DVD rights in Japan. But that doesn't make a lick of difference here.

I've only seen a few episodes of the series but in my opinion, animation quality aside, the stories are better than that movie, or at least more authentically Lupin-esque.

I suggest you watch some of the other Lupin films before you decide Cagliostro is the best.
