I do believe there is an unspoken trust between a geek and his comic shop owner. Yeah, I have my hook up, and he's your classic envisionment of your "comic book guy." Well...he owns a nice little comic/anime shop, and I'm a usual customer. I am also a Hellboy fan...he knows this. So, when he got the two issue series of "Box full of evil" which I wanted, but never got ahold of for some reason, he saved them for me. When I was there, he reminded me of Mike Mignola's work on Disney's Atlantis. Incase you didn't know, Mignola did some of the background art for Atlantis...and he did a damn fine job. Mike Mignola is the mastermind behind the oh so wonderful Hellboy comic series, and the upcoming movie. According to my comic guy, Mignola now has "the hook up" with various members of the animation community, some of which are currently with Cartoon Network, many of which are still with Disney. Now think for a moment...Hellboy...this is somewhat of a "highly anticipated movie"...at least in the comic/indy/people who love monsters fighting monsters world. Or maybe I'm just highly anticipating this movie? Either way....rumor has it, Mignola's "hook up" with the various animation world members have been talking about how much they want to make a little animated one-shot, maybe for Cartoon Networks Adult Swim, or perhaps a video release.

Still, this IS a rumor. Take it with a grain of salt. My comic guy, I trust...but that's me, I actually know the guy.

Even so...this is actually highly likely. First off, Mignola DOES have the connections to make it possible. And, if the movie is as big as is expected, then I'm sure anyone who COULD get ahold of Hellboy rights, WILL want them. We've recently discovered that Cartoon Network is going to produce and show a years-worth of STAR WARS themed 15-minute cartoon shorts, leading up to the premier of Episode 3(and this is confirmed, incase you need to belly-ache). So, if Cartoon Network is actually ready to get connected with projects like these, it wouldn't be unlikely for them to pass up something as oh so sweet as Hellboy. Plus, we've got Adult Swim, now...and as good as AS is doing, a little extra momentum wouldn't hurt. Even a 1-time 1-hour Hellboy animated movie would bring AS up beyond any real-world state of consciousness. And if not Cartoon Network, Disney does have Miramax, or a number of other "underling names" which it could use to distribute a Hellboy animated special on DVD.

In reality, this IS entirely possible. Of course...I have nothing to back it up, except for a comic-book guy who just hasn't been wrong yet. I dont honestly think he has "connections"...but maybe he's psychic? Oh well...he hasn't done me wrong yet. Even so, I'd really hate to start rumors, but...it's a possibility. ;)

Grain of salt, people...grain of salt.

As much as I would love to see an animated feature starring Hellboy I don't see it happening. Considering Disney will always try to appear as the family company I couldn't see them working on any film with the word "Hell" directly in the title. However, considering Miramax recently opened up an animation section they could license the work out to some of the Buena Vista animation studios, bring in Mignola as a director/producer and release it as a DTV DVD around the time the movie is released. Wishful thinking but it would certainly rock to see it done.

An official press release would only make a rumour true. Anything else, just a speculation.
