Well, it was a no contest. You all had to know who was going to come out number one. ;) The second Harry Potter film openend in 3682 theaters and brought in $3 million less on it's opening weekend than the first one did last year. Chamber of Secrets brought in an amazing $87.6 million! Last year, Sorcerer's Stone brought in at the time a record breaking $90 million on it's opening weekend(later to be beaten by Spider-Man). Even though it's only $3 million, is this a sign that future Potter flicks won't do as well? It's only natural as sequels tend to do less business than their originals. We'll see if this trend continues in June 2004 when the third Potter flick, Prisoner of Azkaban opens. A 2 year break might be good.

Last weeks big hit 8 mile dropped to number 2 this weekend with $21 million, that's more than a 50% drop. I guess the people that really wanted to see it, saw it on opening weekend. But, for Eminem that's an $86 million total.

Tim Allen's hit The Santa Clause 2 dropped to third with $15 million, and a $82 million total!

And The Ring continues to bring people in as it's still averaging pretty much the same weekend take since it's opening back in October. This weekend it brought in $11 million which was enough to send it over the century mark with $101.6 million!

Steven Segals latest movie Half Past Dead opened in 5th with $8.2 million.

And sometime this week early, My Big Fat Greek Wedding will cross the $200 million mark. It's total now stands at $199,573,532! Greek Wedding has now been open for 31 weeks.

Opening next weekend is the new Bond movie Die Another Day. Also opening is Friday After Next, the third in the "Friday" films starring Ice Cube. And The Emperor's Club with Kevin Klein also opens.

Here are your numbers.....

1) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets- $87,690,000 ($87,690,000) NEW!!!
2) 8 Mile- $21,328,000 ($86,425,000)

Will the Harry Potter movies get less money each time? I hope not. I think Prisoner of Azkaban will do even better than Sorceror's Stone if word of mouth for Chamber of Secrets spreads and the fifth book comes along soon.

To those who haven't seen CoS, GO! It's so much better than the last one.

The really wacky thing is that it looks like the sequels sell better on home video, even though they don't do as well theatrically.

According to Video Store Magazine, several sequels are among the top 25 selling DVDs of all time -- Rush Hour 2 (4.7 million DVDs est. sold ), American Pie II (3.8 million), The Mummy Returns (3.8 million), Jurassic Park III (3.4 million), and Hannibal (2.5 million). None of their predecessors made the list.

That might be partially because of greater rental revenues. I think that most people are more likely to rent something they haven't seen in the theatres. So someone who felt hesitant about seeing a sequel in the theatres, thinking that it might not be as good as the original, might wait and rent it instead.

Congrats to Harry Potter being #1 as we all expected. Are the books REALLY as awesome as everyone says? No - but they have a huge following and to be honest, I enjoyed the first movie on the whole.

UPDATE: The actual numbers are in and Chamber of Secrets did better than what was predicted. COS brought in $88.4 million vs. the $87.7 million that was predicted. Very good!
