View Full Version : Another Tweety DVD in Japan!

Jerry reports on cartoonresearch.com that Japan's Warner Home Video will release a third (third!) DVD of Tweety cartoons on November 2. The contents are:

1. A Bird in a Guilty Cage
2. Putty Tat Twouble
3. A Pizza Tweety-Pie
4. Hawaiian Aye Aye
5. Bird in a Bonnet
6. Rebel Without Claws
7. Red Riding Hoodwinked
8. Canary Row
9. Tweet Tweet Tweety
10. Room and Bird

There will be an 11th, bonus, cartoon: "Water, Water Every Hare."

Like the other two DVDs, the disc will be Region 2, which means North American DVD-owners won't be able to see it.

This makes 10 Tom and Jerry DVDs and 3 Tweety DVDs that have been released in Japan. Here in the states (where these cartoons were actually made), Warner Home Video has released all of one Tom and Jerry DVD, and no DVDs featuring the WB cartoons. And no plans to do so either. :(

"I didn't know that, does anybody know what is on them???"

My understanding is that they are all of the Hanna / Barbara Tom & Jerry shorts. They are not edited either.

I'm just waiting for the 3rd to come out so I can order all three at once. I watch DVD's on my laptop and I can crack the region code on it. If I want to watch them on my TV, I just plug the laptop into the SVHS in on the TV. I guess those people who watch DVD's on standalone DVD players will not be SOL (surely out of luck).

Where are you guys getting your Tweety DVDs? Is there an online vendor to buy from?

I once had a full list of the T&J DVDs from Larry T. (he's got them all) but accidently deleted it. Maybe Larry will be nice enough (not that he isn't) and post the contents again. From what I remember, there was an assortment of the Chuck Jones T&Js (one whole volume had them). The T&Js with Mammy were dubbed copies and "The Little Orphan" is *sigh* edited. However the set DOES have UNCUT, crystal clear copies of "Saturday Evening Puss" and "His Mouse Friday". The DVDs were sold individually or in two box sets (five DVDs each). All the DVDs had 14 cartoons, along with a bonus Droopy title.

As Thad stated, they are dubbed with the new African-American Mammy voice  , but the visuals are as crystal clear as I've ever seen them :) . Since there were so few cartoons with Mammy in them, it's worth it to be able to watch the others in such a pristine state.

About ordering: You must have a REGION 2 or ALL-REGION DVD PLAYER TO WATCH THESE. I went through an online DVD importer on the web, called "Sazuma.com". They were pretty slow in getting them to me, but they were well-packed and good security in delivery were there, so it balanced out. The wait time was really attributed to their getting them imported from Japan (they only get pickups twice a month), so keep this in mind if you decide to order anything.... Those Tweety DVDs are looking mighty appealing........:)

I haven't ordered from them but others have said they are reliable. I'll report back when I order all 3 in November.

Larry, are the CinemaScope cartoons letterboxed on the Japanese T&J DVDs?

WB is remastering the LT/MM cartoons as we type.

There was a rumor that they did some restoration work on some (most likely 1930-1943 B&W's and the 1934-1948 color cartoons).

WB really puts out some great DVD's and has some excellent software that has made some EXCELLENT DVD transfers.

They have the software to re-combine Technicolor negatives to form a new color image and they also have restoration software for B&W films...it's been said that WB took out 3 years to restore Citizen Kane digitally.

Still...I think we should write letters to WB to release box sets of the cartoons (I'd personally like to see WB put all 1000 general release cartoons to DVD and release another set with the "misc." cartoons like the Snafu's.)

I won't settle for a 14 cartoon set called "The Best of Bugs Bunny," I'd rather have a set like "The Complete Works of Bugs Bunny" :)

Patrick, no disrespect intended, but we've been hearing about WB's supposed remastering work for several years now. Year after year, the major DVD sites have been announcing upcoming Looney Tunes DVDs that never materialized, at least not in
Region 1. I for one don't believe anything said now by Warner or by any DVD site about Region 1 Looney Tunes DVDs. If Warner is remastering them, it's for broadcast on Video On Demand, Pay-Per-View, as soon as that arrives for all of North America.

More to the point, if the cartoons are in the process of being remastered for DVD, why is Japan already getting them? How come these same Tweety DVDs aren't being released in Region 1. With a fourth DVD, we'd have a complete set of the post-1948 Tweety cartoons.

Unfortunately, they're not letterboxed. They're full-screen, which means we're probably losing 1/3 of the actual image. The titles are full-screen, however.... they should have left the entire cartoon on that way.

Oh well.

For all those who have stand alone DVD players and wish to view non-region 1 DVD's

Go to This page (http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayershack.php) and run a search. They have a database on easter eggs on players to remove regional restrictions. Not all DVD players are listed, of course, so good luck!

Because I live in England I will probably get some of the DVD's with the my fav T&J's on(i.e Vol 3 and 7).

P.s BugsandTweety
Don't give up hope WB may just release the cartoon libary on DVD sooner or later.

Sazuma.com's online order form won't get me past the shopping cart stage, and CDJapan's Website can't be accessed at all. Just get a server may be down window. Drat! Thwarted again.

Anyone got any more ideas?

Just give it a little time. These things usually work themselves out. I've gone to CDJapan any number of times recently. And anyway the first came out in the spring and the second in July with VOl 3 planned for November so don't worry about them disappearing.

First off, I want to thank everyone for their contributions to this thread. It's been of an enormous amount of help to me in deciding whether or not to purchase the 10 Tom & Jerry dvds from Japan.

I have a couple of follow-up questions.

1) In looking at the list of Tom & Jerry dvds available at http://www.cdjapan.co.jp , I noticed that the discs are available individually and are also now available in box sets. I have read rumours on the internet that there may or may not be differences in content/edits between the individual discs and their counterparts available in the box sets. Is this true or false ?

2) While the editing of the "mammy"-character's dialogue is addressed, I am unclear about whether any of these other edits (http://tomandjerrycartoons.com/tjedits.html) are present (it would seem that the bulk of the remaining edits has to do with scenes with characters appearing blackface) in the dvds from Japan (I did see, though, that four other cartoons were addressed "The Little Orphan", "Saturday Evening Puss" and "His Mouse Friday" (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12974&highlight=his+mouse+friday , http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15739&highlight=his+mouse+friday )

( I received an email that "Saftey Second does NOT have the black face edit. A Mouse in the House does have the dialogue edit.
Part Time Pal does have the black face edit." Can anyone confirm this ? )

3) Also, in looking at the list of episodes per disc, I noticed that the thirteen episodes directed by Gene Deitch are missing. I was very disappointed when I noticed this. Does anyone know if these are available anywhere in the world ?

(Plus I noticed that there are several other episodes not included in the 10 dvds from Japan : the Hanna Barbera years-- Busy Buddies, Egg and Jerry, Feedin the Kiddie, Slicked Up Pup, Tom's Photo Finish, Tops With Pops and the later Chuck Jones years-- Shutterbugged Cat)

4) I read in this post ( http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6255&highlight=his+mouse+friday) : " ... However, the videos "Starring Tom & Jerry," and the three volumes of "Tom & Jerry's Birthday Classics" all have unedited cartoons. There are some good cartoons featuring Mammy spread amongst them like "Fraidy Cat," "A Mouse In The House," "Mouse Cleaning," "Part-Time Pal," and "Old Rockin' Chair Tom." "

http://www.getvcds.com has vcds of "Starring Tom & Jerry" and the three volumes of Tom & Jerry's Birthday Classics.

http://www.getvcds.com/vcd/tj50birthday2.shtml
http://www.getvcds.com/vcd/tj50birthday3.shtml

Does anyone know if these are unedited ?

Thank you in advance for your time and help,
M.M.

I do hope that you're right, Patrick, about WB remastering the cartoons. I also would like to see them release all of the LT's and MM's ever made, especially all of Bugs' cartoons.

I hope that you are wrong, BugsandTweety (which goes without saying).

You know, it really boggles my mind that WB might actually have no intention of releasing any LT's or MM's on DVD in Region 1.

Is it because they make more money from them by having them shown on CN and Boomerang? I can't believe that's true considering those channels hardly show them as it is.

Is it because there's really no market for these cartoons anywhere in Region 1? Did videos like "Marvin the Martian's Space Tunes" and "Big Top Bunny" really sell that poorly? I can't imagine this is true either. I mean, just look at all of us! We'd all buy LT & MM DVD's if they were ever released, wouldn't we? I know I would. :)

Anyway, does anyone out there have a reasonable explanation as to why WB hasn't released any of these DVD's in Region 1 yet? Is it really because they're being painstakingly remastered, or is it because WB doesn't want to because of a lack of buyers?

I think I speak for all of us when I say, "Somebody out there's gotta know something. Please tell us what's going on!"

I can vouchsafe CDJapan's reliability (and SPEED!)-- I order Japanese cartoons from them regularly.

The T&J boxset sounds tempting, but I'm holding out to see if we get any T&J discs in the 'states in the next year. (And no, the recent "movies" don't count... ;-) )

As for Region 2 solutions, I use a hacked Apex AD-1500. Only $70 at K-Mart! It even plays PAL video, a remarkable little player.

Are these Tom & Jerry DVD's the same as the Tom & Jerry VCD's that are floating around?

Anybody know anything about the quality of those?

Bistribinito
06-09-2002, 09:29 AM
The quality of Video CDs is far inferior to DVDs
VCD use mpeg 1 compression with a resolution of 352x240 and a constant bt rate of 1150 kbs while DVD uses mpeg2 720x480 so technically 4x as better

I would not recommend VCDs. If you have a laserdisc player you can get the laserdisc box set. Their quality is very good

According to this site (link below), those Japanese "Complete Tom & Jerry" DVD box sets were apparently released in both the more common cut version AND a hard-to-find UNCUT version.

http://tomandjerrycartoons.com/tjvideo.html

There are a lot of classic movie fans unhappy with Warner for taking so long to get their favorites out on DVD. Part of the delay is that the current regime at Warner is well-known for having some of the highest standards in the industry, and they prefer to take their time and restore a film to the best of their ability instead of doing a fast and sloppy job that'll need to be redone a few years later.

A related factor is that little of the Turner library was anywhere near ready for DVD release, by Warner Home Video standards, requiring extensive restoration work, which takes time. And money.

Even the post-48s, which overall are in better shape, are generally in need of remastering, as many of the video transfers currently in use were done some years ago.

Mike
